Hey there! if you love versus mode and want to improve more, I’m sure that these tips that I’ll leave in the guide will help you. It isn’t a level change in less than a day, but over time you’ll do it naturally and you’ll notice the difference.

The objective of the guide is to help you’ve more advantage over other players taking into account mechanics, lineups, tactics, etc.

Knowledge of strategies, positioning and many more things theoretically for both humans and infected, the more you practice it in versus mode, you’ll improve over time and as a result you’ll go to the next level.

It’ll be written briefly and precisely so as not to make a lot of text, with the purpose of understanding it quickly.
Weapon classification and types
First, I’m going to show the classification of weapons where their use depends on the distance range of the bullets:
  • Short distance weapons:
*-* Those with a sky blue aura (T1)
*-* Those with blue aura (T2)

  • Medium distance weapons:
    *-* Those with a brown aura (T1)
    *-* Those with a red aura (T2)

  • Long distance weapons:
*-* Those with yellow aura (T2)

I want to make it clear that long distance weapons can be used as medium and short distance weapons; Just as medium distance weapons can be used as short distance weapons, but here I’ll explain in which position it’s best to use such weapons and not choose at random.

Regarding the m60 and the grenade launcher, I didn’t add them to the classification because they aren’t weapons that are usually found but I’ll leave the details of each one anyway.

M60: Medium distance weapon (Can also be used as a close distance weapon)

Grenade Launcher: Long distance weapon (Can also be used as a medium and short distance weapon)
  • You’ve to carefully calculate the trajectory of the shot if the target is very far away.
What weapons should your team and especially you carry?
  • When you start on the human side in any chapter and it’s an open field with a lot of terrain, you must keep in mind that at least one of your team must have a medium or long distance weapon (The essential thing would be 2), that’s because the weapon at medium or long distance has a very important factor when it comes to hitting the shots at the special infected such as spitter, smoker, hunter or boomer that can enter from above or very far away and if everyone has a shotgun, they won’t be able to kill it instantly, this way, if the boomer vomits on 2 or 3 survivors and the charger separates one from the group... the weapons that will save the team from taking a lot of damage, in addition to killing the special infected that separate the survivors and eliminating the horde of infected are medium and long distance weapons (Uzi, smg, mp5 or sniper rifle/rifle).

  • Another example would be... (In open field) If everyone has T1 shotguns (Short distance weapons), no one carries a submachine gun (Smg, uzi or mp5) during the map and in the worst case a tank appears in a situation where it can be hidden at a distance and the survivors can't lower the tank's health because the range of the bullets doesn’t reach it, it’s likely that several first aid kits or pills will be used and the rival team will have an advantage, as well as you can also use this knowledge against those who make the same mistake and in case the survivors they’ve Molotov, they have to use it at the right time or hide from the tank's vision so that it loses control.

  • If it's in a closed field... your team can carry short distance weapons (T1 or T2 shotguns) but I always recommend that at least one carry a medium or long distance weapon.

My recommendations:

Note: I always use the silenced smg because it does the most damage, but you can have your preferences or, if necessary, use the weapons that the map generates, similar to the silenced smg, but they all fulfill their role as a medium distance weapon.

Note2: The “Chrome Shotgun” is more accurate and has a much better firing range than the “Pump Shotgun” unlike the “Pump Shotgun” which has less accuracy, but the bullets are more dispersed (It’s suitable for killing an infected common group) and does more damage up close than the “Chrome Shotgun”.

Note3: I’ll upload images of the weapons that your team must carry depending on whether they’re in an open or closed area after what is written below.

Note 4: Don't forget, these are my recommendations, I don't want to say that this is written in stone, you can create your own strategies about what weapons to carry.

If you’re in OPEN FIELD, the weapons that your team should’ve, that is, the alignment would be:
  • 1 short distance, 2 medium distance and 1 long distance T2
  • 1 short distance and 3 medium distance T1 T2
  • 2 short distance and 2 medium distance T1 T2

If you’re in a CLOSED FIELD, the weapons that your team should’ve, that is, the alignment would be:
  • 3 short distance and 1 medium distance T1
  • 2 short distance and 2 medium distance T1
  • 3 short distance and 1 medium distance T2
  • 4 short distance T2

¿How can I use this knowledge of weapons in versus?ㅤ¿Doesn’t it matter if I carry any weapon and stay behind?
It isn’t only about carrying the weapon and advancing waiting for the attack of the infected, seeing if you kill or not kill with the possibility that they’ll catch you and do a lot of damage, you must have good positioning for the weapon you're carrying.

* For example: You can't take a sniper to the front on the front line, they’ll most likely catch you and do a lot of damage.

The positioning and roles for the weapons your team carries should be like this:

• Short distance: Always go ahead (Mainly focused on special infected, common infected are secondary)

• Medium distance: Go in the center of the team cleaning the area of common infected or finish off those special infected that couldn’t be killed by those who carried short distance weapons.

• Long range: In the rear (Behind those carrying medium distance weapons) to kill those special infected positioned at angles where the medium range weapon wouldn’t kill them instantly or free one of your team if a charger or jockey separates to 1 of the survivors’ team and takes him away.

Next page will come images of what correct and incorrect positioning and roles represent.

Nota: Note: If you’re in the open field and the tank hides and watches from a distance, medium and long-range weapons are essential to damage it, while short distance weapons cover it from possible attacks by special infected.

Note2: If it’s in the case of a Closed area / Narrow places, the use of short distance weapons will be essential, but I suggest that at least 1 must carry a medium distance weapon (In case there are a three cap or they separate the survivors, “X” situation in whichever you find).

In this way, each player on the team will be able to cover the weaknesses of other weapons and the defense increases drastically if each player fulfills his role well with said weapons.

If you play a random versus solo game and notice that the team you’re on, none of them carry an important weapon that may be necessary for the situation you’re in or may be in later, you can do it and, in some way, you’d save the team from a possible well coordinated attack by the special infected that could take down the human team, over time you’ll be able to devise much better tactics

The situation where those teams that take a lot of damage and possibly end up all incapacitated, is probably because they carry the same weapon in addition to not taking into account the alignment, positioning and role of the weapon they carry, you can use this knowledge against those who don’t apply these tactics (More if it’s in vanilla).
Be creative, think about the rest of your team, think about how not to lose
  • Avoid separating from your team, there’s always one who separates, so remind that player or even yourself, because when the attack of the special infected comes and they separate everyone, that’s when the situation becomes tense for the survivors who have little chance of reaching shelter after an aggressive attack.

  • You must always play as a team; the game is made to be played as a team.

  • Make sure that you or your team always save a Molotov for a possible tank.

  • Another very good tip is that when you’re alone or even in a team, and there’s an attack by the special infected, don’t stand still; you’d always be on the move since that way you've several advantages:
ㅤㅤㅤㅤ*-* 1st When you move, the team of special infected, in order for them to catch you, ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤthey’ll need to move faster than you to reach you and therefore there may be a lack ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤof coordination between them due to their haste, in this case, you can take ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤadvantage of using the bullets of the weapon whatever you’ve at the time, of the ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤenemy wastes his moves unnecessarily, they’ll never be able to catch you.

ㅤㅤㅤㅤ*-* 2nd If you’re alone and 3 or 4 special infected come for you and you don't move, ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤyou’ll have to cover yourself from the attacks that come from all directions in 360°, ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤtherefore, you MUST BE MOVING at in direction to a place where there are no ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤspecial infected, that way you can shoot the special infected that come behind you ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤand it'll stop being 360°, becoming 180° which you’ll have to worry about.

Here is a representation of what you’ve to do if 3 or 4 special infected come after you:

  • If you’ve the gift of leadership, you can direct and make plays with your team.

  • This should be a team game, if you are in a hurry, there will be weak points.

  • Always check all possible angles and directions of all the places around you where a special infected can regenerate and even the place itself that you left behind while advancing, that way you'll have more information and will be mentally prepared for when the special infected come out.

  • If you’ve a medium or long distance weapon, never shoot while running because the accuracy goes to the other side of the world and you don't kill the special infected quickly, generally if there is no infected chasing you, crouch or stay still and shoot with precision to the target, that way you can kill it quickly without problems, plus you can save your team (Only if your goal is far away).
When you're on the side of the infected
  1. Always keep in mind the basics of team attacks to do the most damage to survivors, remembering the explanation about weapons and team alignments and positioning; take advantage of that player who separates from the team or those who carry weapons that don’t favor them for the situation in which they’re.

  2. Don't forget the best basic attacks with the special infected for greater damage:
    ㅤㅤㅤ* Hunter + Spitter
    ㅤㅤㅤ* Charger + Spitter
ㅤㅤㅤ* Boomer + Jockey + Smoker + Charger (To separate the survivors)

  3. If you get to the situation where there’s only 1 boomer and 3 special infected to catch, the goal you’d always keep in mind is a three cap, or separate them after the boomer vomits first, variables may appear after that attack..
For example: 1 incapacitated or 3 survivors with life in Orange / Yellow (39 health points) opening infinite options for the next attack.

  4. With the tank always play as a team, never go in alone; If you're a tank, keep your mind calm and you’d always know what to do with your team to incapacitate the survivors or in case it’s against a difficult team... kill 1 or 2; depending on what suits you best to win the versus (Applying everything mentioned from the beginning, I’m sure you’ll find a gap in their defense).

  5. With the tank, the recommendations for the probability of incapacitating everyone are with these types of strategies:

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ*Boomer vomits 2 or 3 survivors and after that the tank enters with pure blows ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ(Without failing) and when he’s close to 2,000 health points, the rest of the special ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤinfected must enter to support him, that way you’ll get a Wipe / Incapacitate the 4 ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤsurvivors.

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ*If it’s in an open field, one of the special infected must necessarily catch the ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤsurvivor closest to the tank while it’s advancing, so that they can incapacitate the ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤfirst survivor and taking that situation into account, if you’ve a boomer, vomits on ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤthe other 2 survivors to make it difficult for them to shoot the tank and be ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤdistracted by the common infected while the tank incapacitates the survivor they'd ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤcaught at the beginning and they can even use a hunter to kill the incapacitated ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤsurvivor and the tank covers him, or in any case they all go towards the survivors ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤwho are still standing... as you can see, the variables after incapacitating the first ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤsurvivor of the 4 it opens up many attack options, it only remains to know which ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤattacks to use and do them well.

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ*If it’s in a closed area and the survivors have Molotov, discard the boomer, look for ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤa three cap so that they can enter after the tank incapacitates 1 or has 2,000 health ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤpoints and if everything goes well, they’ll be able to incapacitate everyone.
Some extra tips for 2 senses at the same time (Synesthesia), motivation and discipline
  • When you're infected you’ve to break the concentration of the survivors' team by feinting an attack but without getting killed or lowering your life, it helps in many ways, in addition to breaking concentration, you give your team time to regenerate completely the special infected to attack again; If you’re a survivor and a tank is regenerated on the infected team, after killing the Support / Hit, you must go for the tank, that will make him impatient and he won’t know what to do, something basic, but it’ll be perfect (Taking into account count on the terrain you’re in, seeing the pros and cons).

  • In each game, unless there’s something special, all 4 must move together (For both infected and human).

  • Kill common infected in your path to clear an escape path for the rest of the team.

  • First of all, reduce down the opponent's OPTIONS, if they’re in a tank situation that’s in a distant place or on top of a building and your team shoot from afar with a rifle or sniper rifle (Medium and long distance weapons), what do you think? What will the tank do? He’ll try to hide and ask his team to deal damage to the survivors, the tank will now play while conscious in 2 things (Not taking damage and not letting them see him so they can shoot him) in countless cases and depending on which team ends up more affected, they’ll be forced to make a decision in an emergency, it becomes very difficult to think about anything else during that moment, you must aim for that gap; that’s the “surprise to be seen and attack” strategy.

  • When your team of special infected decides to attack in group, your attack isn’t just going and waiting for a survivor to get into your line of fire, it’s a tempo (When you achieve a desired result in one move less than planned) and timing (Sequence of movements carried out at the right time) where you’ve to move and find a place where the survivor is within your reach to catch him.

  • If it’s in the case of zonemod and the tank can’t incapacitate the 4 survivors, what should be done is distribute the damage from his fists to the 4 survivors so that they can use their pills and the bonus will go down, this It’s a very important advantage, it can also be applied in vanilla if the situation ensures that after the tank, you’re sure that the survivors won’t reach the shelter and your team will.

  • All of these tactics and strategies can change as the situation you’re in requires.

  • All of these things I mentioned are skills that you’ll develop and improve over time the more you practice them.

  • There is nothing wrong with making changes and developing your training routine, in fact, they must be continually changed and developed, however, the “Tips on how to improve versus – Intermediate Level” is the most important and fundamental in your development for be a better version of yourself.

  • Dear L4D2 Player, I want you to be fully aware of this fact...
Everything starts with this guide as a base and ends with it but if you aren’t able to make good use of all the tips that I’ve left here and you try to look for more advanced methods... keep this in mind, there is no point in doing it, the buildings that don’t have solid foundations always collapse at the slightest breath of wind. After all, all the advice in the guide is used as a basis for more advanced techniques, you must efficiently use all the advice he left you here.

  • The player's level is something that is built little by little, like a tower, if the ground is resistant then they can build a taller tower, but with so much information, the ashes will pile up very high before they can finish the first floor, I say that they’re reinforcing it too late... and what do you think will happen if a tower like that collides with a single story tower that was built firmly... that’s the most basic thing in improving your level in versus, you must master all the tips, like the roots that start from the most basic, from there the stem and then the branches emerge, with more speed, precision and strength.
  • See for yourself what you are good at and what you can improve to increase your level.

  • When the survivors attack the infected and you are the tank, rely on your skills and knowledge to be the one to attack them.

  • The talent to understand and infer the basis of something is the great amount of effort obtained from repeated difficult games you played.

  • There are many players who don’t have fixed positions that adjust the capabilities of the weapon or didn’t know how to best use said weapon when playing and if that is done by an entire team, their biggest problem is in the technical direction, since they can’t understand the unique potential of the weapon they carry.

  • You may be nervous when playing a difficult game but never doubt your abilities, remember, there are no players who are difficult to beat!

  • People grow faster in difficult situations, the same applies to versus games in any situation.

  • The game is also about designing and predicting your team's performance during the game.

  • Learning something quickly isn’t necessarily a good thing, let it progress slowly, because the road is vast and long; It isn’t bad to get there slowly... you could hit a wall called boredom.

  • You’ve to find out roughly the opponent's position, what weapons he carries, how he plays, whether he carries T1 or T2 and ways to deal with it if you’ve to attack him with a special infected “x”.

  • Make sure you can handle 1 vs 1 with your skills, in case you're having a bad day or still can't do it, group up with another teammate to be able to emerge victorious.

  • When facing a strong opponent, you must carefully choose each move.

  • As I said before, if you're in a hurry there will be weak points and the player on the enemy team who can realize that weak point won’t only realize that you're failing, but after he understands, he’ll create a situation where you can’t defend yourself, restricting your movements, you’ll become more impatient and your team will also be susceptible to any well organized attack by the special infected.
In short, they’ll create a situation that you can’t control.

  • You need to lay the groundwork before you use more advanced strategies without knowing their purpose and have the misfortune of the enemy team knowing how to counter it..

  • Each player's skill level has the characteristic of becoming more active where it’s compatible, in my case, it was practicing intensely against Special Infected Bots with a higher than normal AI in Co-op (I’ll leave the link at the end of the guide), but you can learn it in another way, not everyone learns from the same method, that’s why there are several ways, even if the way is different, everyone reaches the same result (Improve) and I think you can overcome that limit.

  • If you don't have qualities to be a great team leader, then at least memorize the tactics for yourself and play in the most manageable position, that's enough but don't give up.. if you don't give up, the way will always be open.

  • Despite what I said above, I recommend that you master all the team positions as a player while playing several versus games, because that will give you a clearer idea of what your team can do to a certain extent and you know how to help them at the right time, otherwise your progress will be stagnant and that’s when you lose that little extra margin and your vision narrows, there can be no good order in that state.

  • Remember, if your teammate dies because of a greedy decision (Killing a special infected to be MVP or just wanting to kill everyone), it doesn't make sense; always focus on the survival of your teammates more than on getting kills if what you want is to win and improve as a player.
  • Suddenly entering combat in complex terrain will cause variables; If it was against a weak team you might be able to ignore those variables, but if that variable is a strategy of an experienced player or an experienced team, the situation changes.
Therefore, as survivors, there are no need to fight in a complex terrain when it’s possible that they’ve prepared a rotation of infected that favors them and much more if there’s a tank, you can avoid that situation if you look for a space (A large place or closed, depending on where your team is) where it is easy for your team, as survivors, to receive the attack and not end up all incapacitated or receive a lot of damage.

  • The one or those who go forward with short distance weapons not only have to protect their companions and shoot the infected, but also maintain the “line”; you create a safe area for the rest of the team (Those who carry medium and long distance weapons) to be able to shoot calmly and at the same time cover the lines of the team's territory so that they aren’t crossed and receive attacks; If the line is crossed, even those who are using long distance weapons will take the damage.
But this can vary depending on the situation, if there’s a tank or something happens where they’ve to make a strategy that will make them change each other's position, it has to be done but in the same way remember the weapon you’re carrying and the limitations of what can you do.
Of course the infected are going to try to break through the opponent's line, so pay attention to the movements of each special infected.

  • As long as you’ve the will to become stronger, you’ll be able to overcome your weaknesses.

  • Create an opening and smash them to pieces.
Final words and something else
During the process of creating the guide, I really enjoyed doing it even though it took me a few weeks, that’s because I’m passionate about creating content that can be useful to someone, in addition to making these details and tips known to new users who want Learn more about versus mode in Left 4 Dead 2.

If you’re interested in knowing the mods that I use for my training against high level infected bots to improve, I’ll leave a link at the end of this in a collection of mods, you just have to click on “Subscribe to all” to have them (It works only in local mode and will be more difficult than a normal versus).

Honestly, I don't really like the color of steam as the background in the guide I created but for that same reason, in principle I created the guide in a file in Microsoft Word document format so that you can read it since it has these good points:
  • It's more organized with a total of 29 pages.

  • It has an index, explaining how to get to the desired subtopic without having to scroll down with the mouse wheel.

  • It has all the images that I've added in this guide with higher quality.

  • It has a pleasant colored lighting as a background to read it with pleasure.

  • You can read it at any time of the day since it's in word format without having to go to Steam and go through the entire process to search for it among all the guides on L4D2 made by other users.

  • It has the links to the guide and the collection of mods that I use to play more intensely in Co-op/Campaign mode (I recommend having a partner in your game because playing it alone is difficult to get through but it also helps you stand on your own two feet).

I hope it has helped you, expanded or awakened new options in you when playing a versus by increasing the level of tactical use of your plays, it’s time for you to exceed your limits,
you can ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ

If I’ve helped you in any way in the guide, don't forget to rate it with a like,
I’ll appreciate it ~(˘▾˘~)
