Returning to civilisation: the reconquest of Paradise
Chronos is located at N 38.5 and E 22.5

The Ocean chart available here gives us some details about the trade winds:
https://moffkalast.github.io/Sailwind-Map/

The main question was this one: ‘Now that we have successfully made it to Chronos, how to get out of it and to return to civilisation?’

In principle, I could have gone back to Aestrin or to Emerald achipelagos and I had to choose either way.

On studying the trade winds chart, I finally decided not to sail to NW against the trade winds to try to reach Fort Aestrin because I woud have been sailing clause-hauled all the time and the storms are more frequent in the North than in the South. Not very nice and not fun at all.

So I just decided to sail directly South down to N 31 to catch the eastern trade wind and then to go West downwind using the big main square sail.

By my initial estimations, the 1st leg = around 946 nm would have taken around 20 days sailing South

The 2nd leg = E 22,5 – E 5 = 126.2*18 degrees = 2271.6 nm would have taken around 20 days more, plus or minus a week

N.B.: 1 degree in the game = 126.2 nm by my estimations. I might be mistaken but you can
measure yourselves

Total distance to be covered: 946+2271= 3217 nm in 40-50 days

Weather conditions
Weather conditions:

For the 1st leg: beam reach or close-hauled, right tack= upwind

For the 2nd leg: beam reach, broad reach or even running with the wind, right tack = downwind

Supplies taken
Supplies taken:

15 barrels of water + 12 crates of food

1 barrel of water = 5 days

So, 15*5=75 days of autonomy at sea

12 crates * 4 days/each = 48 days of autonomy and after this, we will need to live only on fishing

Voyage log day by day
All the time references will be given by the Aestrin time, it’s like the Greenwich meridian in Sailwind
1st leg:

Day 343: Got out of the Chronos harbour after a lot of pushing and a little of sailing, through the channel that goes directly to West. I really wish I had an engine or at least 1 or 2 oars.

Lying adrift facing N, from 8 40 pm to 5 am local time

Day 344:

Storm: His Majesty Neptune wishes me to have a nice trip :)
Still adrift waiting till it’s over from 7 am to 8 pm

Day 345: Travelled around Chronos by 9 30 am and set course to East at 12 h

Day 346: N 38,5 E 23

No land in sight in the East, Chronos barely visible in the West
Blue water, wind from NW, Force 5
Set course to SSW

Day 347: course SSW, close-hauled, right tack, strong wind Force 5-6

Day 348: 12 30 pm: sailing on beam reach, Force 4, course S, right tack.
‘Susanna’ seems to be rather fast under the jib, the gaff main and the gaff mizzen sails but I have to trim the sheets in and out all the time: so the jib pennants similar to the ones on real sailboats would be very handy.

Day 349: storm from NW, 1st barrel of water finished

Day 350: sailing on to S
N 36, same longitude of E 23
Right tack, beam reach

Day 355: N 35
Right tack, wind from W to NW
Still sailing on beam reach and broad reach, it depends on the wind change and it is really very annoying because the point of sail is changing every 2 minutes and thus I have to be trimming the sheets in and out all the time. But at least I ‘m not bored :)
Force 3-4
2nd barrel of water finished

Day 357: N 34
Closed-hauled, right tack, Force 3-4
Course SSW

Day 359: Storm from S for the first time
Measured my latitude at 6 pm: N 33

Day 361: 3rd barrel of water finished

Day 363: Wind change !!!
Now the wind is from SSE, left tack !
It matches indeed the trade wind coming from E and marked on the wind chart but I don’t know yet my current latitude
Sailing on close-hauled, course S
Measured my coordinates: N 31 at 6 pm

Day 364: Measured the coordinates again
N31, E 21.5
Wind from SE
The 1st leg is finished: we have made it to the latitude N 31 in 20 days as expected

2nd leg: 21.5-5 = 16.5 degrees
16.5*126.2 nm= 2082.3 nm left to Dragon Cliffs
The Ocean is really empty and I feel very lonely. This epic voyage is starting to be tiresome.
And it would be nice to see some dolphins or seagulls. I really wish to get out of here :)

Set course to West on day 364: left tack, broad reach, wind from SE, Force 4-5

Sailing on during the day only under the square main that gives around 7 kts speed, which is already very nice. Sailing on under the jib at night to avoid capsizing or taking too much water.
The speed will drop to 3-4 kts but this can’t be helped.
In total: the distance expected to be covered in 24 h is around 100 nm

If I had a mate to replace me on duty at night, I think we could make around 140 nm in 24 h like real sailboats

Day 366: 9 am, course W, wind from NE instead of SE, right tack, broad reach

Day 367: 12 h, 4th barrel of water finished

Day 370: storm, wind from NE
Already 370-343= 27 days at sea

Day 375: wind directly from E, running with the wind, Force 4.
A storm is coming from E

Day 380: Measured the latitude after 2 storms and it’s N32
I have accidentally gone up, by 1 degree latitude

Day 381: Adrift, a new storm is coming from E
Local noon: N 32, E 11
We have nearly made it !
Still 6 degrees longitude = roughly 600 nm = roughly 6 days of sailing left
Course WSW, running with the wind, Force 3

Day 383:
Already 40 days at sea: I ‘m really tired of this sailing and I want this voyage to be over :)
I wonder: why do people go to sea at all? It’s a completely crazy behaviour !
Maybe because the land is too boring??
Course WSW or W, running with the wind or broad reach, right tack
N 31: We have returned to the right parallel of latitude
The water has just turned green instead of blue: we are coming closer to the Emerald archipelago!

Day 384:
Estimated position by dead reckoning: N 31, E 10 cf. screenshot
Course W

Day 385: storm from N

Day 387: another storm from N and still no land in sight
These storms coming around every 2 days are really tedious!!
Let’s go W till day 390 and then we’ll measure the longitude again

Day 390: Land in sight!!!!
Cf. screenshots
9 am: Saw Dragon Cliffs due to W when I got up the deck hoping to measure the longitude at 12 h.

Finally ! We’ve made it !

The Ocean is crossed !

Day 391: storm and thunderstorm from NE
Neptune says ‘hello’ to me once again to finish this voyage
Adrift East of Dragon Cliffs

Day 394:
4 am: sailed around the southern cape of DC and made for Serpent Isle, running with the wind. This final mini-leg was very nice and rewarding.
Docked at Serpent Isle at 8 30 pm, feeling very tired but also happy to have made it to the land. The ship is completely black with dirt and needs a good cleaning up.

The voyage is over: we have spent 51 days at sea.

Now it's time to draw conclusions.

Conclusions
Conclusions:

I have used 9.5 barrels of water out of 15 and 9.5 crates out of 12.

I still have kept my reserve food crate untouched, it’s 8 lamb steaks and I haven’t started them at all.

In total, we have been at sea for 51 days and have fished only twice.

Distance covered= ca. 3200 nm, it’s like sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain to Haiti

Thank you for your attention and happy sailing:)

Thank you mowflow, I'm glad my story helped you :)

Have a nice return trip and don't forget to trade because Chronos should have interesting goods

Dude, what an impressive documentation! Sometimes I can barely remember what I did five minutes ago :D Truly inspiring. I started at Dragon Cliffs and headed directly north to catch the sailwinds quickly, sailing almost the entire time straight northeast. I'm navigating an almost fully rigged brig. The journey took me 18.5 days, plus an extra day to dock at the port. On the way to Chronos, I had the feeling that the ship was constantly being pushed off course by the wind, so I had to sail almost directly east between longitudes 19 and 22. The entry into the port was manageable thanks to the map, but maneuvering the large ship in the narrow space was quite tricky. Now I'm considering which route to take on the way back. Thanks for your contribution!

Hi Haber, thank you so much for your feedback !!

I'm glad that it helped you

I have recounted the distances and it turns out that I had covered some less than 3200 nm ( but not much) because 1 degree = 1 big sq on the map = 95 nm ( instead of 126 nm) according to my recent measurements based on the distance between Ft Aestrin and Siren Song and Ft Aestrin and Sunspire. In addition :

1 middle square= 23.75 nm

1 small square= 4.75 nm

You can count and measure yourself if you are interested

I 'm using it to try to go from Aestrin to Happy Bay by dead reckonig

I agree with your suggestion about online servers and AI sailors :)

I'm so amazed and happy to see such a complete record of a voyage in Sailwind. It's just so cool to get the feelings of reading a true sailing log in Steam. Learnt quite a lot from your route planning, wind estimation, and supplies management, might go on a similar voyage later!
(PS. The devs really should add online servers or at least AI sailors for recruitment, sleep at night and submit the ship to Neptune and Aeolus just doesn't make sense)
