How to skip the launcher and fix your game
By 🐭
The reason From Dust has such bad feedback is also the same reason it's so hard to get this game to run, which is, ONCE AGAIN, the useless launcher.

If you just installed From Dust and can't get it to run, or you would simply like to skip the Ubisoft Connect launcher all together, then here's how you can defeat it:

Step 1
Delete or rename these two files:
UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe
ubiorbitapi_r2_loader.dll
Step 2
Create a symlink pointing to From_Dust.exe in the game's directory, and name it
UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe
Step 3
Download this zip and extract the two files to the ../steamapps/common/From Dust/ directory:
Step 4
If you're on Linux (including the Steam Deck), set the launch options to:
PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%

These may change in the future, but this is what I had to do to skip the launcher.
Step 5
Done!

You are now ready to play From Dust!
Conclusion
And that's it. That's all it takes. Once again, a game launcher has proven itself to be both pointless and downright destructive to the gaming experience.

Game launchers are dumb and never seem like an idea that's implemented to improve anything or please anybody but The Investors.

Yes, The Investors.

These are diabolical men who have their own goals and intentions. They plot and plan against humanity. They insist on adding game launchers, loot boxes, unskippable start up videos, encrypted virtual file systems, bloom, motion blurring, 30 FPS caps, cutscenes, long boring stories, woke politics, and, worst of all, DRM to games. They are to be considered rich and dangerous.

Remember, if you see these men, do NOT approach them. Do NOT attempt to apprehend them. And above all, do NOT believe their lies. Simply contact your local OSI agent and seek shelter.

They have come for many games before and they will come for many games again.

Vigilance is how we survive them.

Be alert. Be vigilant.

just tried on the Deck with the guide's linux launch option and game consistently crashes after the initial loading screen, but changing the launch string to the one Sairuli posted below instead

PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%

got to the profile creation screen and main menu before crashing

For me, setting the launch options to

PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%

then Alt-Tab out and back in during the ESRB screen did the trick.

Thanks! Totaly worth the 2 minuites of my time to set it up. I hate how the companies seem to hate their games and I love how gamers loves these games and make wonders for the community

Thank you. Ubisoft is useless. I can't get into my account cause of the 2 step thing, I opened a case on the like 5th and i still havent had any reply. I used to play this when it first came out and needed some nostalgia, just to find out I couldn't play it. Thanks to your comment, I'm now on Story #9. Brings back so much memories.
