Novice Level: Basic Smart-Sounding Words
Diverse - various, different
"The company prides itself on cultivating a diverse workforce that draws from many different backgrounds."

Convivial - friendly, lively
"The holiday dinner was a convivial gathering, filled with laughter and good stories."

Inquisitive - curious, questioning
"Her inquisitive nature led her to explore her surroundings, forever cautious after yesterday's happenings."

Revere - deep respect or admiration
"Many people revere Rob Oster for his EXCELLENT robustness on a sprite game."

Superfluous - unnecessary, primarily through being more than enough
"Wow, this Rob Oster guy? He's made a superfluous guide touching on advanced terms. What a whacko."

Merit - the quality of being excellent or worthy
"The merit of her argument became clear as she presented compelling evidence and logical reasoning."

Immaculate - perfectly clean, neat, or tidy
"Rob kept his surroundings immaculate, nary a single item out of place."

Astute - having an ability to assess situations and turn this to one's advantage accurately
"She made an astute observation about the company's crippling financial status, which everyone else had let slip their minds."

Paradox - a situation or statement that seems impossible or is difficult to understand because it contains two opposite facts or characteristics
"The paradox of her situation was that the more she tried to fit in, the more she felt alienated by those around her."

Culminate - reach a climax or point of highest development

"The fundraising event will culminate in a charity run, which is expected to attract over 1,000 participants."
Intermediate Level: Progressing Smart-Sounding Words
Empirical - based on experience or observation

Quintessential - the perfect example of something

Anomaly - something that deviates from the norm or standard

Facetious - treating serious issues with deliberately inappropriate humor

Ephemeral - lasting for a short time

Oblivious - the state of being unaware of what is happening around you

Acquiesce - accept reluctantly but without protest

Idiosyncrasy - a mode of behavior or way of thought peculiar to an individual

Discerning - having good judgment

Infallible - incapable of making mistakes
Advanced Level: Expert Smart-Sounding Words
Vicissitude - a change of circumstances or fortune, typically one that is unwelcome or unpleasant

Pedantic - excessively concerned with minor details or rules

Quixotic - exceedingly idealistic, unrealistic, or impractical

Ineffable - too great or extreme to be expressed in words

Sycophant - a person who acts obsequiously towards someone important in order to gain advantage

Surreptitious - kept secret, especially because it would not be approved of

Prolific - producing many works, results, or offspring

Perfunctory - carried out with a minimum of effort or reflection

Capricious - given to sudden changes of mood or behavior

Ostentatious - characterized by vulgar or pretentious display
Scholar Level: Superior Smart-Sounding Words
Hubris - excessive pride or self-confidence

Chimerical - wildly fanciful, highly unrealistic

Circumlocution - the use of many words where fewer would do, especially in a deliberate attempt to be vague or evasive

Clandestine - kept secret or done secretively

Antithesis - a person or thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else

Philistine - a person who is hostile or indifferent to culture and the arts

Fastidious - very attentive to and concerned about accuracy and detail

Egregious - outstandingly bad, shocking

Disseminate - to spread something, especially information, widely

Denouement - the final resolution of a plot
ROBUST Level: You're Up Your Own A$$ With This Tier
Pusillanimous - showing a lack of courage or determination; timid. Spineless, a puddy with two S's.

"Despite his boisterous exterior, he was actually quite pusillanimous, avoiding conflict whenever possible."

Serendipity - the occurrence of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way

"The discovery of penicillin was a remarkable case of serendipity, with Alexander Fleming noticing the antibacterial qualities of a mold accidentally grown in his lab."

Precocious - (of a child) having developed specific abilities at an earlier age than usual

"A precocious child, he could read long novels and write clear, coherent sentences by age five. Do you ever know that lanky guy from Big Bang Theory? Sheldon? Pretty much him."

Panacea - a solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases

"Many people search for a panacea to life's problems, but the truth is that... no one knows sh!t at the end of the day. Ride the wave."

Laconic - using very few words

"His laconic response, a simple 'No', left me with the impression this guy was a freak above all else."

Incontrovertible - not able to be denied or disputed

"The DNA evidence against the criminal suspect was incontrovertible, leaving no room for doubt about his guilt."

Bourgeois - of or characteristic of the middle class, typically with reference to its perceived materialistic values or conventional attitudes

"His taste in art was decidedly bourgeois, favoring traditional, comfortable works over more challenging, avant-garde, strayed pictures."

Bildungsroman - a novel dealing with one person's formative years or spiritual education

The book 'To Kill a Mockingbird' is an example of a Bildungsroman, given how it follows Scout Finch's moral and psychological development. So basically-- anything paired with someone's upbringing and whatnot.

Autodidact - a self-taught person

"Being an autodidact, she taught herself several programming languages and built her own website."

Aphorism - a pithy observation that contains a general truth

"The aphorism 'the pen is mightier than the sword' conveys the idea that words and communication are more effective tools for change than violence or war."[/b]

Keep up the great posting Mr. Rob Oster!!! This guide has helped many, including myself, on how to expand our vocabulary and thus become better roleplayers! With this guide I've created many memorable moments between my friends and others!!!!!!!!! I believe I might be...dare I say it...the best roleplayer ever, now! All thanks to this guide!!!!!
