What is Odd seed and how to get it
At some point in the game you will encounter Francis The Wandering Merchant (or maybe you already did).
And Francis sells this peculiar item - Odd seed.
You can buy it for 500 Glims and you can plant it in your Garden.
When it's harvested it produce various Tchotchkes and some empty bottles.
Now, 500 Gs is not that much, but in the very beginning it's not so insignificant either.
Is it worth buying and growing those Odd seeds or should you stay clear of them?
Let's do some math!

What exactly you get when harvesting Odd seeds is random.
You always get at least 1 Empty Bottle and at least 1 Empty Shell.
If you are lucky, your harvest may include following items:
  • Old carpet - 1
  • Valuable ring - 1
  • Old Shoe - 1
  • Empty Bottle - up to 4 (average ~2)
  • Empty Shell - up to 3 (average ~1.5)
Carpet sells for 1000 Gs, and Ring sells for 480.
Empty Shell worth measly 4 G so let's just ignore it.
As for Bottles and Shoes - we will get to them later.

So how often would you get those more valuable items from those Odd seeds?
I'm not good at data-mining game files, so I just did in-game testing.
From growing 192 Odd seeds my total harvest was:
  • 85 Carpets
  • 129 Rings
After selling them (and accounting for seeds' cost) profit was:
(85*1000+129*480)-192*500=50920

So, only from most valuable items you will get average of 53% return on your investment.
Let's err on the side of caution (don't forget about RNG!) - and round it down to 50%.
Not too bad, but...
There's always a But...
To grow Odd seeds you need space in your Garden, and for a Garden you need space on your boat - and that is quite limited in the beginning.
And materials for building that Garden (especially if you want to build more than one) don't just fall from the sky either.
And you always need to grow veggies for food, and for trading, and for Errands (if you decide to do them).
And there is a lot of other ways to make/collect Glims in the game, and you don't actually need that much funds anyway in the long run.
And you should also take into account your reaction to getting bad luck on RNG, especially when getting long stretches of that.
Wait, there's more!
But again - Odd seeds are producing more than just trinkets for sale.
Yes, it's time to get back to those other items - Empty Bottles and Old shoes.

You will need some Bottles and Shoes for crafting throughout the game, and yes - you can fish for them, but both are somewhat a rare catch after Atul fixes your fishing station.
You can also buy both from Francis - but why spend money when you can make money? Also his stock is limited and you would likely have to shop more than a few times to get needed quantities.

Also extra Bottles can be smelted into Glass - and sold, making you more money (and even more after you upgrade your Foundry!.. but I'm getting off topic here). I didn't include that in my calculations because it gets complicated - what to keep, what to craft, what to sell... Too many variables! But you might take it into consideration when deciding if you want to deal with Odd seeds.
Because...
It's your decision, after all.
Yes, in the end it all boils down to you and your opinion.
I just provide information and my personal point of view.
I think Odd seeds are worth it - both for extra income and materials.
And for a little bit of thrill too... It's better to gamble in-game than in Las Vegas.
