ALL HERO BACKSTORIES | Darkest Dungeon II
By XEALEEN
This guide describes full info about Darkest Dungeon II heroes and reveal their past to the player. Here you will find information about every possible hero who has memories of the past, which can be unlocked through the Shrine of Reflection that can be found randomly on the map during your ingame expeditions.

Work in progress: work on this guide is still ongoing. Maybe now it looks like just a list of achievements, but it will not be so for long. Very soon, I will update each achievement with a detailed description and a screenshot or video explaining how to unlock it.

Base Information
In order to know the past for every Hero you can take to your party from the start of expedition you have to visit the Shrines of Reflection. They found randomly on the map and their main function is to unlock new abilities for the heroes. When entering the location, the player must choose one of the 4 heroes to start. Heroes can all access to 6 skills over 5 Chapters in The Shrine of Reflection.

Some of the nodes will present a short narration of the history of the hero while others will present a small mini-game in the form of combat where it must be successfully completed in order to unlock the skills.

Despite the fact that there are 12 playable heroes in Darkest Dungeon II, unlocking abilities through the Shrines is only available for 11 of them. The fact is that the Bounty Hunter cannot be selected at the beginning of the expedition, because he now only hires between locations in The Inn. The events listed in this guide are not available for him.

If you want to know why you should visit these Shrines at all and go through the memories of the heroes, then you should understand that each of the five memories for each hero unlocks a new abilities. The hero's abilities can be changed at any time right during your journey in a stagecoach, the only thing is that for the sake of a new ability you will have to abandon the existing one.

The more different abilities your hero has, the more different builds you can create and the higher the potential of your hero. When you find links with the abilities of other heroes that will create effective synergies, then this can be the key to your victory even in the most difficult moments.

And if you're also an achievement hunter, once you've fully unlocked 5 memories for any of your heroes, that unlocks A Clear Conscience achievement. And if you do the same for all playable heroes, then your reward will be Srhine of Reflection achievement.

Also please keep in mind that this guide is full of spoilers and if you continue to read it, it will be at your own peril and risk. Seriously, I warned you not to complain later that you learned here something that you wanted to find in the game yourself. As long as you`re okay with this, then we can proceed.

🔶 Leper
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💠 Chapter One: Shun Them Not

💠 Chapter Two:Infection

💠 Chapter Three: Treason

💠 Chapter Four: The Purge

💠 Chapter Five: A Beautiful View

Chapter One: Shun Them Not
Objective: Foster The Sick
So, we play for Baldwin the King, ahead of us are royal advisers who will prevent us from realizing our plans. On the side of the opponents there are leper patients, our task is to get to them and embrace everyone.

Each turn, advisors and lepers will deal stress damage to us, and therefore we have abilities that allow us to move Baldwin forward, we also have an ability that relieves stress, as well as an ability that stuns the royal advisors for one turn, which makes our task easier.⠀
After we get to rank 1 of our side, we can use Embrace on the nearest leper. After that, he will disappear from the battlefield, and our character will again be thrown into the very back row.⠀
Helping lepers reduces stress, but if that's not enough, then we have the Royal Stride ability, which moves us forward and reduces stress by 2 points.⠀
The whole process should be repeated until you use Embrace on the last leper. He will infect King Baldwin with leprosy and this will end the first chapter.⠀

Chapter Two: Infection
Objective: None
"Early signs could be ignored or concealed, but soon the reality was inescapable. Whether by some affliction of lineage or by direct transmission, symptoms of incurable disease began to openly manifest themselves. Wracked with pain, he summoned doctors and aides from the farthest reaches of his lands, all of whom concluded the worst: the King was dying."

Chapter Three: Treason
Objective: None
"Sedition, like any illness, spreads slowly. Rotten with a cynical opportunism born of longstanding entitlement, the scheming circle of advisors drafted mutinous plans. Though bedridden, he had long since divined their intent, and feared the disastrous results of their would-be rule. Summoning his blacksmith - and his strength - he hoisted his blade, and rose to meet the coming threat."

Chapter Four: The Purge
Objective: Survive Their Treason
So we again play for King Baldwin, but already stricken with leprosy. In this mini-game, our task is simple: survive and kill all the royal advisers who previously wove their intrigues against us.
Your opponents will take turns attacking and applying positive buffs to their entire party, which increase the damage and dodge of your attacks. You need to quickly reduce their number, otherwise you will simply be taken in by a number.
The main damage to you will be dealt by the Hidden Blade ability, but among other things, your own attacks can inflict negative effects on you, such as poisoning.
Everything will end as soon as you deal with the last opponent. To do this, in your arsenal there are both melee attacks that cause small damage to all enemies at once, and a sword strike that kills an enemy with one blow.

Chapter Five: A Beautiful View
Objective: None
"Satisfied that the spirit of his benevolent tenure would endure, he abdicated the throne. People gathered at windows and along the roads. Weeping, some threw petals at his feet, while others watched in reverent stoicism. As he walked beyond the city gates, he marveled at the beauty of the world, and was grateful for his many blessings."
🔶 Vestal
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💠 Chapter One: Want Not

💠 Chapter Two: A Momentary Lapse

💠 Chapter Three: No God but Men

💠 Chapter Four: Divine intervention

💠 Chapter Five: Wrath

Chapter One: Want Not
Objective: None
"Together with her sisters she tended the Order's sacred flame in pious humility. The Abbey's austere arches and sactified masonry afforded her a life of sheltered privilege that few beyond the walls could imagine. Discipline was paramount, and when forbidden desires would seek to distract her from monastic toil, she smothered them... reluctantly."

Chapter Two: A Momentary Lapse
Objective: Satisfy your curiosity 3 times.
In this mini-game, we have to play as Vestal and keep the fire going, not letting it go out. The fire has 31 health points and will go out every turn, dealing 10 points of damage to itself. In parallel with this, our task at certain moments is to look out the window.
In order for the fire not to go out, we must come close to a pile of firewood and pick some, then move close to the fire and throw firewood into it.
Firewood completely heals all 31 health points of fire and we have time to seize the moment again and look out the window.
In order to complete the mission, you need to look out the window three times. The difficulty here is that you need to look into it at certain moments when noise appears outside the window, a separate animation tells us about this.

It often happens that we have a choice: either throw wood on the fire or look out the window. Thus, one has to balance between one or the other and make the right choice depending on the circumstances.

Chapter Three: No God but Men
Objective: None
"Her terrified wails rang off the transepts as the Abbot dragged her to the oubliette. As a deterrent of the congregation, her punishment would be more than commensurate with her blasphemy. Locked interminably in the Festering dark, she awaited retribution from the divine while suffering the mortal tortures of its enraged servants."

Chapter Four: Divine intervention
Objective: Defeat The Torturer!
This test may seem difficult to some, if you do not quickly understand what the essence is. So, your task is to defeat the Torturer using your set of abilities and features of the battlefield.

The Torturer hits you hard and bleeds you. Your basic abilities deal very little damage and heal you very little. How then to win this fight?
The key to victory lies in correct positioning. A couple of turns after the start of the battle, a beam of light will appear in your half of the field, which gives a significant bonus to your abilities. The longer you are under this effect, the stronger your abilities!⠀
⠀The enemy will not stand still and wait for his death, in his arsenal a number of abilities that will interfere with you. Use Brace to block most of the damage and block the bleeding effect for at least one turn.
The more turns you stand on the rank the beam of light points to, the stronger your Judgment ability is. With bonuses, she will not only give extra damage to deal to the Torturer, but also replenish your HP bar very well.⠀

Chapter Five: Wrath
Objective: None
"Eager to share her emancipation with her convent, she rushed headlong toward the dormitory. But where the chamber door once stood, she was met instead by a sheer wall of fresh masonry. Her cries of jubilation died in her throath. From behind the drying mortar and sturdy stone there came a feeble scratching, then her sisters' last piteous gasps. The price of her wantonness would not be measured solely in blows from the flail...."
🔶 Highwayman
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💠 Chapter One: Freedom

💠 Chapter Two: Laying Low

💠 Chapter Three: One Last Job

💠 Chapter Four: Highway Robbery

💠 Chapter Five: Shackled

Chapter One: Freedom
Objective: Defeat The Guards to Escape.
This time your task is to deal with 4 guards alone. It may seem that this is difficult, because there are a lot of guards and they hit very hard, but in fact there is a nuance in your favor.

Most of your abilities give the Highwayman damage protection or evasion. Sometimes enemy attacks will still deal damage to you, but often you will often avoid it. Next, let's talk about how to quickly kill all the guards.
Punching not only moves your character to the front row, but also places a Mark Token on the guard.
And then use Knee Kick, which will deal 100% more damage if the target has a Mark Token. So you can literally finish off the guard in two actions and go to the rest.
Sometimes it may happen that the guards in the back row will try to sound the alarm. If they succeed, you will receive more stress damage. In order to prevent this, move to the back row and throw a stone at the guard, this will knock down his desire to raise the alarm.
The main thing here is not to neglect caution. Not all damage will pass by and it may seem at some point that you will lose. And yet, if you quickly reduce the number of opponents to a minimum, then it will be much easier to survive.

Chapter Two: Laying Low
Objective: None
"Harried by a pursuing garrison, he took refuge in the foetid canals of the city. Concealment took its toll, and soon he began to see himself in the furtive, scurrying pests that formed an unfortunate portion of his meager diet. Freedom, once so fondly imagined, had become a vortex of degradation.."

Chapter Three: One Last Job
Objective: None
"He was sick and starving. And in desperation, offered his expertise to an unscrupulous malefactor. Shackled once more to an unsavory task by an advance of gold, he lined his belly, girded himself, and prepared for One. Final. Heist.."

Chapter Four: Highway Robbery
Objective: Rob The Coach.
In this memory, we need to rob the coach. You will again fight alone against the enemy guards, which will now be only two. To win, it is enough to lower the coach's health to 0. This battle is quite simple and does not require any special tactical decisions.
The guards don't have a lot of health, the damage from your melee attacks will almost always be enough to kill the guard with one hit, although it also happens that you can leave him 1-2 HP.
It makes no sense to kill all the guards and therefore only attack the coach. Each turn, the coach will call in new guards to reinforce him, so look at the strip with the turn order and always kill the guard who will go first. After that, attack the coach.
The coach also can't get a lot of HP, so literally 4-5 of your attacks can be enough to completely destroy him.

Chapter Five: Shackled
Objective: None
"The lifeless bodies of a woman and child, horribly mutilated by errant gunfire, stared spectrally through the remnants of the coach door. Arrested by the ghoulish sight, he felt the cold chains of remorse tighten around his heart. Guilt was a pursuer he could never outrun, a prison he would never escape.."
🔶 Grave Robber
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💠 Chapter One: Luxury's Lap

💠 Chapter Two: Night Cap

💠 Chapter Three: Embarrassment of Riches

💠 Chapter Four: Filthy Rich

💠 Chapter Five: The Afterparty

Chapter One: Luxury's Lap
Objective: None
"Born into money, and married into more, she spent her days on horseback and her evenings in the ballroom. She was the object of her husband's boorish lust and drunken temper, placating his worst tendencies with a veneer of gracious deference. All the while, indulging murderous fantasies of freedom... and the fortune that would soon be hers."

Chapter Two: Night Cap
Objective: Enough Is Enough!
This easy mini-game is more of a plot than a gameplay character. It's not very difficult to win here, just follow my instructions. So, there is your heroine and her husband, who will constantly damage her with stress. You need to kill him by poisoning his drink.
Her husband is a real abuser, so every turn he will insult her and humiliate her in every possible way, which will cause stress damage to the character.
Hide behind a screen and wait for the moment when the drink cart loses its protection status. If you try to approach it at any other time, you will fail.
Poison your husband's drink with a special ability.
After that, he must take a long sip of the poisoned drink.
Wait for the poison to kill your husband, you have an ability that reduces your stress bar. Apply it more often.

Chapter Three: Embarrassment of Riches
Objective: None
"Years of decadence and financial mismanagement had left the estate in staggering debt. Humiliated and facing eviction, she wandered the empty halls, hurling inebriated indignities at the portrait of the deceased, whose hand had rested so possessively upon her shoulder. A gleam of gold on that painted paw reminded her that his rings were unaccounted for... and must have been buried with him."

Chapter Four: Filthy Rich
Objective: Loot Your Husband's Tomb.
Another challenge with stealth in which we will need to avoid the guard. Your task is to find the right coffin and open it. On his turn, the guard marks two rows, you will need to leave them, otherwise you will be thrown into the farthest row and you will receive a huge amount of stress damage.
Calculate your movements correctly, otherwise you can drive yourself into a trap from two adjacent rows, which will be inspected by the guard. Move to the first row carefully.
Even if the guard noticed you, then in order to reduce the level of stress, it is enough to take a sip from your flask. Be careful, if you get caught a second time in a row, you will lose, so drink from the flask when you are safe. Also keep in mind that this action costs your turn and you may run out of action points and be unable to leave the guard's line of sight.
When you get to the first row, then you have the opportunity to get rid of the annoying guard by hitting him in the face with a pickaxe. The guard only has 5 HP and your ability deals exactly 8, but if you've been discovered before then your hero might have a -50% on the next hit debuff , so you might end up not killing him with the single strike. This will make the challenge longer and create even more difficulties for you.
Whether you killed the guard or not, your task is to open the coffins one by one. Be careful, some are hit by traps that deal normal damage and stress damage!

Chapter Five: The Afterparty
Objective: None
"Armed officials dispatched to oversee the eviction were shocked to find the front doors of the manor listlessly ajar. The lavish carpets were lousy with dirt and leaves. A heap of heirlooms gleamed on the ballroom floor - rings and broaches in a careless pile. The lady of the manor, however... was nowhere to be found."
🔶 Jester
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💠 Chapter One: Some Strange Melody

💠 Chapter Two: Music of the Night

💠 Chapter Three: Play to the Crowd

💠 Chapter Four: A Dark Song

💠 Chapter Five: Finale

Chapter One: Some Strange Melody
Objective: None
"He was a layabout without aspiration or purpose, content to loiter on street corners languidly busking for passersby. Roughly ushered from the bustling commercial blocks, he wandered the forgotten corners of the city. An intoxicating melody drifted over a nearby cemetery wall, and he stumbled deliriously amongst the tombstones in search of the performer..."

Chapter Two: Music of the Night
Objective: Win The Duel

Jester's memory story is one of the most unusual and interesting in the entire game. In this memory, you will create a song with a violinist.
The violinist will play part of the song for you, and your task will be to correctly select the next part, otherwise you will get damage.
For the current version of the game, the following order is relevant:
  • INTRO - VERSE
  • CHORUS - VERSE
  • CHORUS - BRIDGE
  • MISSTEPS - SOLO
  • VERSE - CHORUS
  • VERSE - CHORUS
  • SOLO - FINALE
Using FINALE deals enough damage to kill violinist.

Chapter Three: Play to the Crowd
Objective: None
"When word of his uncommon talent reached the palace, he was summoned to entertain King and Court. Anticipating an historic performance and enthused adulation, he was stunned to find himself instead the object of their debased ridicule. While his noble audience dined drunkenly, he was mocked, tortured, and subjected to an obscene array of decadent humiliations..."

Chapter Four: A Dark Song
Objective: Play 3 Melodies.
Okay, this memory can be tricky, but only until you understand what is required of you. In order to win, you need to mirror the notes that are on the opponent's side. You have abilities that move Jester forward and backward, and can also completely replace a note. You need to arrange the notes starting from the first row in the same way as the notes on the right side.
When a note is in the correct place, a tuning fork symbol appears below it. Jester can replace any note with himself and he will be in the correct position. However, be careful: every action you take inflicts stress damage, so if you make too many wrong moves, you will lose.
If the notes are in the right place, but one of your note is different, then it can be changed with a random one, this will cost you 2 stress damage. When all the same notes are in the correct position, you can play the melody. This will not only "kill" enemy notes, but it will also heal your stress bar.
Repeat this puzzle 3 times to proceed and finish this memory.

Chapter Five: Finale
Objective: None
"Bowing low, he basked in the echoing applause of dripping blood. The scene of wholesale dismemberment drove him to fits of mirthless hysterics. He was laughing still as he placed the blade against his own hand, severing his connection to whatever twisted talent he had so fleetingly enjoyed. Aimlessly, he drifted from the hall, humming broken bars of a discordant melody he could not quite remember..."

💠 Chapter Three: Extra Credit

💠 Chapter Four: Failing Grade

💠 Chapter Five: Do No Harm

Chapter One: The Good Student
Objective: None
"Brilliant and bold, her unconventional theories created nothing short of a scandal in her fourth year. The mocking whispers and scornful glares of her peers and professors had an ironically invigorated effect upon her 'extracurricular experiments.' The mysteries of the human body - of life and death itself - hovered just above her scalpel's reach... If only she could acquire a corpse of sufficient freshness."

Chapter Two: Head of the Class
Objective: Disprove The Professor.

Chapter Three: Extra Credit
Objective: None
"By the second semester, her research was at a critical point. And regular supply raids of the University laboratories had become necessary. During one such expedition, she stumbled upon her professor, awkwardly slumped over his podium, a bloody kerchief on the floor. Here, then, was her ideal cadaver, her long-awaited opportunity. And she would not waste it."

Chapter Four: Failing Grade
Objective: Stabilize The Patient.

Chapter Five: Do No Harm
Objective: None
"Disposal of the body was a procedural affair, a carboy of acid would dissolve the thing, and no evidence would remain. In the weeks that followed, however, she found herself unable to focus, instead sitting motionless at her desk, paralyzed by the ceaseless wailing that reverberated in her mind."

"The politics of a military career are perhaps as treacherous as war itself. Though untested in combat, his acumen for advancement was unmatched. Chapter Two: A Leader of Men
Objective: Onward To Glory!

Chapter Three: One Eye Open
Objective: None
"Every night, the men of his regiment would interrupt his fitful convalescence. Mutilated and maimed, the spectral garrison clawed at his bedcovers, whispering hateful truths in his ears. The exhausted attendants in the field hospital would wake to the sound of panicked screaming and inglorious sobs. It was not the war that had taken his eye. It was pride."

Chapter Four: Ghosts of the Past
Objective: Honour The Fallen.

Chapter Five: In the Trenches
Objective: None

Chapter One: Baptism
Objective: None
"He was a listless shade of the city, indifferent to his penury. With his skeletal build and bleeding gums, he looked an easy target for a pair of drunks seeking an outlet for their frustrations. The blows rained down, a tooth cracked - and a feverish crimson eclipsed his vision. In pain... there was power. He rose above his panting assailants, and, reveling in the marks of their sin, forgave them their trespasses."

Chapter Two: In Service of the Divine

Chapter Three: More, more!
Objective: None
"He roved out in search of torment, consuming the sin of any who would purge their misdeeds upon his body. Each wound fueled his fervour, the rapture only found in baptism by the lash. Drunk on his bloody intinctions, manic with the need for some elusive apotheosis, he gouged at himself without mercy. As blood poured from his rended flesh, his conciousness faltered, and the thundering hoofbeats of Death rang violent in his ears."

An eternity of pain and rot. Heaven on earth."
