"Herodotus recorded them as "Amazon", and the closest etymological explanation for his reference could be "Alp-Kïzan", which means "Heroic Women", "Warrior Girls", "Landlord Maidens (like "shieldmaiden" in Scandinavia)" in ancient Turkic languages, probably from the ancestry of white western ancient Idel-Ural (or Atil-Ural, or Volga-Ural) dweller Oguric (Hun-Bulgar) Turks.

It can be divided into this: alp (hero) + kız (girl) + an (plural suffix)

"alp" in Old Turkic and modern Turkic means "warrior, hero, brave, giant, landlord" (from Wiktionary).

"kïz, kız, kyz, kiz, kuz" means mainly "young woman, girl" but also "woman" in both Old and modern Turkic.

There were more than one plural suffixes in Old Turkic, each were used in different purposes. Most prominent of these were "-z", "-an", and "-lar". While today only "-lar" is used actively in Turkic, other plural suffixes still live in some words such as "göz, diz, ikiz, etc.". Also, "-an" is another Old Turkic plural suffix which got extinct, while it still lives in the words like "oğlan, bodun, eren etc. (modern meaning: "boy", originally "boys, sons"; the word "boy" in modern Turkic means tribe in English, but it was originally "bod", so "bodun" means "tribal confederation, nation, people, tribes"; "er" in modern Turkic means "soldier, man", originally "man", hence "eren" means "men")".

It is probable and likely that the Herodotus' word Amazon is a reflection of Alpkuzan (also Alpkïzan, Alpkızan, or Alpkyzan)."
