The health meter consists of two segments, vitality (green) and energy (yellow). As Indy is hit, his energy decreases. After his energy is depleted, additional punches received will decrease his vitality. If his vitality is wiped out, Indy will be knocked out. Even punches Indy blocks can reduce his energy somewhat, as can punches thrown by Indy (particularly if many punches are thrown in quick succession). If Indy can avoid getting hit (including blocked punches) by stepping away from an enemy and take a break from throwing punches, his energy will recover until it matches his current vitality (i.e., the yellow segment will increase until it matches the length of the green segment). But Indy's vitality can only be increased outside of fights, by finding items to heal his wounds.

In addition to hitting an enemy, supposedly blocking an enemy's punches will also decrease the enemy's energy, but I haven't really noticed an enemy losing additional energy in any meaningful amount when Indy blocks a punch (beyond the energy the enemy loses from throwing a punch, whether it connects or not).

Indy puts all of his available punching power into each punch, and the punch power meter will take a couple of seconds to return to maximum strength (Indy can continue punching regardless of whether the meter is full).

Find an approach that works best for you (e.g,. hit your opponent, back away from him just a little bit before he can retaliate, let him close the distance, and then repeat the process, or wait for you opponent to punch, block that punch, and then counter-punch with a couple of shots, or dispense with defense and spam punches in an attempt to overwhelm your enemy). If your keyboard includes a numeric keypad, you might prefer using it.

The steadier Indy can keep the plane, the better chance Henry Jones Sr. has of shooting the enemy planes. Get a feel for when to dodge enemy fire. If Indy gets shot down, you will lose out on some Indy Quotient points, but Junior and Senior will steal a car instead and continue their journey, and you can score IQ points at security checkpoints instead.
Miscellany
  1. In case you overlooked it on the store page, Lucasfilm Games has provided the Grail Diary on Steam at https://steamproxy.com/steamstore/manual/32310 (useful for selecting the legitimate Holy Grail near the end of the game).

  2. Steam Cloud saves[steamdb.info] currently don't restore properly if you reinstall the game (or verify the integrity of the game files), because a default savegame.___ file is installed in "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Steam\steamapps\common\Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade\INDY3" instead of your previous savegame.___, so if you didn't back up your previous savegame.___ file, you won't be able to access your previous saves in-game once you've reinstalled the game. The savegame.___ file indexes any individual saves (e.g., savegame.001, savegame.002, etc.) stored in "%AppData%\LucasArts\Indiana Jones".

To work around this without having to store a backup of savegame.___ yourself, you can move your savegame.___ file to "%AppData%\LucasArts\Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", where it won't be overwritten and will be backed up via Steam Cloud. You will need to use a symbolic link[learn.microsoft.com], so that any updates you make to your saves in-game are reflected in the savegame.___ file that was moved.

    1. Move your savegame.___ file from "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Steam\steamapps\common\Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade\INDY3" to "%AppData%\LucasArts\Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade". If you are unfamiliar with environment variables[en.wikipedia.org], %AppData% refers to AppData\Roaming. IF YOU SUBSEQUENTLY REINSTALL THE GAME, DO NOT REPEAT THIS STEP.
    2. Make sure the savegame.___ file in "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Steam\steamapps\common\Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade\INDY3" was removed, otherwise you will receive the error message "Cannot create a file when that file already exists" after the following step.
    3. Run Command Prompt as administrator; enter the following (adjust the paths if needed):
mklink "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Steam\steamapps\common\Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade\INDY3\savegame.___" "%AppData%\LucasArts\Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade\savegame.___"

Whenever you reinstall Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, you will need to replace the default savegame.___ file in "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Steam\steamapps\common\Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade\INDY3" with a symbolic link to the savegame.___ file in "%AppData%\LucasArts\Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (as per steps 2 & 3 above), but at least you will be able to access your previous Steam Cloud saves in-game, and I find it to be more convenient than maintaining a copy of savegame.___ elsewhere.

  3. Indiana Jones® and the Last Crusade™ Windows update (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.exe) uses Tandy/PCjr 3 Voice sound emulation because at the time the port[aarongiles.com] was created (on which the Steam version is based), there wasn't an FM synthesis emulation library that could be included. Therefore, you might prefer to use ScummVM[www.scummvm.org], DREAMM[aarongiles.com], or DOSBox[www.dosbox.com], as these include AdLib support. Here is a YouTube playlist of several compositions taken from the game, including Tandy/PCjr 3 Voice and AdLib samples.

If using ScummVM, DREAMM, or DOSBox, you will lose Steam Cloud support (I jury-rigged these so that Steam Cloud still automatically backed up my saves from these, but I decided that method was too convoluted for this guide); however, ScummVM itself supports integrated cloud save functionality. In ScummVM, select "Global Options...", then select the "Cloud" tab, then specify your storage provider: Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, or Box (you need an account with one of these). If using a DOSBox SVN build[www.dosbox.com] since r4196, or forks such as DOSBox Staging or DOSBox-X, you can use an overlay mount[www.vogons.org] to save to a folder which you sync with online storage.

If you plan on using DOSBox with this game, you will need to extract the 00.LFL index file from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.exe (or otherwise acquire 00.LFL from another source), and place the 00.LFL file in the INDY3 subdirectory. This step is not needed if using either ScummVM or DREAMM as an alternative to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.exe. See LAAExtract[github.com] or this comment[advgamer.blogspot.com] for means of extraction. Without 00.LFL, you will be prompted to "Please Insert Disk 1, press ENTER" if using DOSBox.

@niksu The number keys aren't working? Do you have dedicated number keys or a 40% keyboard? I tested my keyboard with a Finnish QWERTY layout and the fighting controls worked. You could try ScummVM, DREAMM or DOSBox with the game, or if you prefer not to do that, you could try something like AutoHotkey to remap keys.

If the controls are working, but you're having trouble with fights, you might want to try ScummVM, as you can save mid-fight (Ctrl+F5), so you could save scum your way through fights. Unfortunately, ScummVM's save format isn't compatible with save files from the original game (i.e., you can't import saves); you would have to start a new game if switching to ScummVM. I tested this method with the introductory fight in the gym at the beginning of the game and encountered one issue with this method: the health bars didn't display properly upon loading a game I had saved mid-fight.

It's possible to make it through the entire game without fighting, if you wish to avoid it.

I can't get the fighting controls to work. Any suggestion on what to do?

@MickFlyLive Use the number row as best you can; there is probably no advantage to be gained in remapping.

What if we don't have a 10 key on our keyboard?

It's very helpful. Thank you.

Thanks, this is perfect. The graphics smoothing makes this game look terrible in my opinion, so the first thing I needed to do was turn it off.
