Unit Damage Guide (V0.8.4)

There are a lot of Upgrades, Effects, Conditions, and Bugs that affect Damage in AoD. The combinations can be overwhelming. This Guide is here to help you make sense of it. It breaks down the entire Damage calculation, including every potential effect, so you can understand what a Unit can be expected to dish out in any scenario, and plan accordingly. All information within, except where otherwise indicated, has been empirically tested. As you'll see, the real results do not always agree with the tooltips!

First, Some Terms and Conditions
  • Shred/Damage will appear as: "Shred | Damage"
  • "?": Value has not been directly tested yet, on this patch
  • "DpS": Damage per Second
  • "DoT": Damage over Time
  • "Fd": Fire Damage
  • "Fury": All 3 Fury Upgrades; +25%, 35%, 40% to Archer/Arb/Hunter Damage. Additive.
  • "Cover": Cover Upgrade; +50% Damage in Towers
  • "F Base": Faction bonus to Unit's Base Damage
  • "F Bold": Faction bonus to Emboldenment bonus
  • "[x]": Brackets denote that "x" is what goes in the Damage Formula
  • "_": Placeholder for a term that is not applicable to the scenario
  • Any effects that do not apply to the unit should be considered a 1 in the formula
Archer
Base Damage: 0|10
Attack Speed: 2.5s

    Physical Damage Modifiers:
  • Tower: +[2 | 0]
  • FBase: +0 | 15% [0 | 0.15] for Rebel
  • FBold: +0 | 15% [0 | 0.15] for Rebel
  • Bold: +0 | 25% [0 | 0.25]
  • Horrify: Order, Rebel: -0 | 50% [0 | 0.5]
      • Volatist: +0 | 50% [0 | 1.5]
  • Fury: +0 | 100% [1 | 2]
  • Cover: +50 | 50% [1.5 | 1.5]; only applies if in Tower
Physical Damage = (Base + Tower) * (1|1 + FBase + FBold + Bold + Horrify) * Fury * Cover
*Note that FBase, FBold only applies to Rebel, and Horrify and Bold are mutually exclusive, so, for Order and Volatist, this reduces to simply multiplying each effect together, i.e.:
(0|10 + Tower) * Bold/Horrify * Fury * Cover

e.g. Rebel, In-Tower, Bold, Fury, Cover =
    (0|10 + 2|0) * (1|1 + 0|0.15 + 0|0.15 + 0|0.25 + _) * 1|2 * 1.5|1.5 = 3 | 46.5d
Volatist, On-Foot, Fury, Horror =
    (0|10 + _) * (1|1 + _ + _ + _ + 0|1.5) * 1|2 * _ = 0 | 30d

Fire Arrow: 0 | 4 Fire DpS for 7 seconds (1st tick is immediate; total of 8)
*When multiple DoTs are applied, whichever will deliver the most total Damage *from that point on* overrides the other (i.e. a weak DoT can override a strong DoT if the strong DoT is almost played out.
  • On Foot:
    • Horrify: +150% [2.5]; same for all Factions
      • Changes to from 8 ticks to 6 ticks
    • Bold: +150% [2.5]
      • 6 ticks
    • Fury: +100% [2]

    • Fire Formula: Base * Horrify/Bold * Fury
    • Max: 0|4 * 2.5 * 2 = 0|20 for 6 ticks

  • In Tower:
    • Horrify: +0% [1]; same for all Factions
    • Bold: +0% [1]
    • Fury: +100% [2]

    • Fire Formula: Base * Fury
    • Max: 0|4 * 2 = 0|8 for 8 ticks

Changes from last patch:
  • Archers gain +2 Shred in Towers.
  • FBase, FBold, Bold back to additive with one another.
  • Rebel Base Shred reversed from 1 to 0.
Hunter
Base Damage: 16|16
Attack Speed: 3s

Physical Damage = (Base + Tower) * Horrify/Bold * Fury * Cover

e.g. On-Foot, Horrified =
    (16|16 + _) * 1|0.5 * _ * _ = 16 | 8d
e.g. Bold, Fury, Cover =
    (16|16 + 5|0) * 1|1.25 * 1|2 * 1.5|1.5 = 31.5 | 60d

Flamer
Base Physical Damage 0 | 8d
Base Fire Damage: 0 | 4Fd
Attack Speed: 4 Attacks every 2.5s
Base Total Damage: 0 | (8d + 4Fd) * 4 + 4Fd/s * 7s

  • Each Attack applies an 8-tick Fire DoT. The DoTs do not stack.
  • Each Attack consists of Physical Damage + 1st tick of Fire Damage.
  • Last Attack is followed by the remaining 7 ticks of Fire Damage.
  • Flamer must stay on-target for full attack animation to get all 4 attacks
Damage Modifiers (apply to both Physical and Fire Damage):
  • FBase: Order only: +30% [1.3]
  • Horrify: -50% [0.5] for Order, Rebel
      • Volatist: +50% [1.5]
  • Bold: +25% [1.25]

Physical Damage = Base * FBase * Horrify/Bold

e.g. Order, Bold =
    0 | ((8d + 4Fd) * 4 + 4Fd/s * 7s) * 1.3 * 1.25 = 0 | 52d + 26Fd + (45.5Fd over 7s)
e.g. Volatist, Horrified =
    0 | ((8d + 4Fd) * 4 + 4Fd/s * 7s) * _ * 1.5 = 0 | 48d + 24Fd + (42Fd over 7s)

Changes from last patch:
  • None.
Impaler
Base Damage for Rookies: 40|30
Base Damage for Bold/Horrified: 15|20 (Tooltip is wrong)
Attack Speed: 4.5s

*Impaler still has out-dated Shred/Damage for Bold and Horror

Physical Damage Modifiers:
*Unlike all other units, Impaler modifiers affect Shred.
  • FBase: Order only: +30 | 30% [1.3 | 1.3]
  • Horrify: Order, Rebel: -50 | 50% [0.5 | 0.5]
      • Volatist: +50 | 50% [1.5 | 1.5]
  • Bold: +25 | 25% [1.25 | 1.25]

Physical Damage = Base * FBase * Horrify/Bold

e.g. Order, Rookie =
    40|30 * 1.3|1.3 * _ = 52 | 39d
e.g. Volatist, Horrified =
    15|20 * _ * 1.5|1.5 = 22.5 | 30d

Changes from last patch:
  • Rookie Shred increased from 15 to 40.
  • Rookie Damage increased from 20 to 30.
  • Lost Powerful buff.
Armor
  • Armor reduces Total Damage by 70% (*0.3), as long as it lasts.
  • The last shot, that Shreds the final Armor off the target, gets full Damage.
  • Fire Damage ignores Armor.
  • Some Elites have multiple layers of Armor. The layers ALL apply, multiplicatively (i.e. against 3 layers, Physical Damage is reduced by 70% ^ 3 (*0.3 ^ 3) = 97.3% (*.027)! (Thanks, Crypto!)
  • Damage cannot be reduced below 1 against Elites. (Credit Crypto)
Misc
  • Each consecutive Fire Arrow on target resets the DoT instantly, triggering the initial Tick again, essentially adding that Tick as extra Damage to each shot. BUT, simultaneous hits sometimes do NOT get the 1st Tick.

  • DoT does not stack.

  • Weaker DoTs can overwrite stronger DoTs, depending on when the hit lands in the previous DoT's Ticks. From the time of impact, whichever DoT would do more total Damage, from that point, will be the one that wins out.

    e.g. Bold Archer's 10x6 DoT is applied, then Rookie Archer's 4x8 DoT comes after. Rookie DoT can do 32 total Damage. Thus, if it hits AFTER the Bold DoT's 3rd Tick, it overwrites (because 32 > 30). If it lands BEFORE the 3rd Tick, it does not (because 32 < 40).

  • According to Crypto, Power does NOT work on Elite crusher.
