S.Y. Turbinia

Leírás
The Turbinia, also referred to as the "Ocean Greyhound" was the brain child of Charles Algernon Parsons who in 1884 invented the Worlds First Steam Turbine. With the help of some associates and a sheet metal factory, they constructed and launched the Turbinia in August of 1884. Originally fitted with a one shafted set of turbines, she did not reach the speeds Parsons was hoping for. A new problem occurred with the invention of the turbine, Cavitation. Because the propeller is spinning at an incredible speed for the time, pressure voids form on the surface of the propeller, the water will start to boil into bubbles that will eventually pop. This popping will cause damage to the propeller such as pitting. In 1895 Parsons invented the first water tunnel to study cavitation, this discovery eventually lead to the Turbinia fitted with two more shafts on either side with three propellers on each shaft. The Turbinia now had four turbines, a High Pressure, an Intermediate Pressure, a Low Pressure, and a Reversing Turbine on the center shaft. June 26th 1897, at Spithead, the Turbinia appeared unannounced, racing at an unbelievable speed of around 34-35 knots, unprecedented at the time. Afterwards the Admiralty would attend further testing and would contract Parsons to design and manufacture Turbines for the Royal Navy's newest ships, the HMS Viper and Cobra. Both were lost in accidents but the Turbine soon caught on and shaped the world we know today.

This has been a fun project to complete with Gladius and myself. Interior is fully modeled, with the help of the Newcastle Discovery Museum which holds the Turbinia preserved, we were able to obtain good reference photos for the engine room and other areas of the vessel.

Dimensions
Length: 32m
Beam: 3.25m
Draught: 1.5m
Max speed: 34.9 knots at clear weather conditions.
How to Operate
There are two hatches, one rear of the pilot house and one forward of the engineers station. This will take you down to either end of the boiler. From there you can light the boilers by use of the key. Coal bunkers are located behind the furnace doors. The Turbinia will require atleast two people to operate, one on the helm, and one to operate the throttle controls. There are two throttles in the engineers station, each has a label on the empty space of the instrument panel. For forward travel, increase the left throttle, for reverse, increase the right throttle. Telegraph throttles will be as followed,

Slow: around 12.5-.25
Half: around 50-75
Full: 100

Bilge pumps may be activated in the turbine room on the port side. Light switches are located on the ceiling.

I think it's the Mauretania. The screenshot is probably meant to recreate this historic photo https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ca/The_Steam_Turbine%2C_1911_-_Fig_1_-_The_Turbinia_and_Mauretania.jpg
