Modding | How to Install Several Mods at Once
By Elysian ♡
Firstly, on the title, it wasn't my intention to mislead. I do not have a way to install several mods at once on the same game installation, but there is a way to do it across more than one installation that would allow you to switch between your favourite mods in about a minute, with no chance (if you do it right) of game corruptions.

The only pressing disadvantage to this method is storage space, if you are short on it. Otherwise, rather than risk installing two mods to one game and relying on the mod managers to restore the game to vanilla so I can launch the other mod, I now do what I will explain in this guide.

I hope to someone it is useful.

I have released a duplicate guide for Total War: Empire - Definitive Edition too. The process works the same for both games but I thought to post it in this community too in case by chance someone didn't have Empire, and would therefore never see that guide.

Step 1 - File Structures
This section may be already familiar to those of you who have modded before, so you might be fine to skip it. However, for the benefit of those who don't know, there are two folder locations you need to use for this.

Game Installation Location:
The first is the obvious one - where your game is installed. By default, this will be on your C drive.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Napoleon Total War

If you have installed the game somewhere else and somehow don't know where, you can get Steam to find it.
  • Find the game in your Steam library.
  • Right click on it's name in the left-hand game's list in your library.
  • Click "Properties".
  • Click "Local Files".
  • Click "Browse".

Appdata Folder:
This should be in the same location for everyone, no matter where you install the game, as far as I know. If that turns out to be wrong, feel free to let me know in the comments and I'll update the guide.

Sometimes this folder is hidden and you can't see it by following the file path in file explorer, so the best way to find this is:
  • Press Windows Key + R.
  • Type: %appdata%
  • Find 'The Creative Assembly' folder - I just press the letter 'T' and it shoots down to it. Saves scrolling.
  • A "Napoleon" folder should be there.

Both of these locations are important throughout the guide.
Step 2 - Start/Preparation
Either you will have a vanilla installation already installed, or you will have a modded version already installed. This will be quicker if you have a vanilla version already installed. I'll go through both. A rule for both methods, though, is you need to make sure all the different installations have different names, otherwise mods will install to the wrong place and you'll get overwrites and it'll all be a mess.

To illustrate, if you have Darthmod Napoleon on one, Vanilla Napoleon on another, and WW1 Napoleon on another, you'll want your Game Installation Folders and Appdata Folders to be named like that.
  • Napoleon
  • Napoleon Darthmod
  • Napoleon WW1

P.S. I would name all of them "Napoleon" and then the extra detail just so they all appear together. Easier. Otherwise D for Darthmod will be at the top and W for WW1 will be at the bottom. If you have all the other Total War games it just makes it messy.

Vanilla Start:
If you have a vanilla game installed already, you are lucky, and can copy the entire Game Installation Folder and Appdata Folder respectively. You'll want to paste it somewhere like your desktop, then rename it, then put it where the original folder is. If you don't rename it, they'll be the same name and it'll just overwrite the original.

Modded Start:
If your current game is already modded, change the Game Installation Folder and Appdata Folder names respectively to something else. If you have Darthmod, "Napoleon Darthmod" or something will do.

Now, go to Steam, and uninstall the game. If you have renamed both the Appdata and Game Installation Folders, this is perfectly safe. Steam will perform the uninstall and find nothing there, but the game goes grey in your Steam library, allowing you to install it again for a vanilla copy.

From here, if you want to have a few game copies, it would be quicker to follow step two and copy the vanilla install on your disc to make a new Napoleon Total War for another mod installation, but you can just repeat this method too. It'll just take longer, as you have to wait for the game to download and install each time.
Step 3 - Mods and Switching Between Games
Once step two is done, you'll all be in the same place.

Steam will only launch the game that appears as follows:
  • Game Installation Folder: Napoleon Total War
  • Appdata Folder: Napoleon

Whatever version you launch, whether modded or not, needs to have those respective folder names. I rename my vanilla game to "Napoleon Vanilla" if I am running a modded one.

To switch between games is a case of renaming the current folders to something else, and renaming the folders you want to use to the vanilla names the game recognises.

If you run a modded game through a launcher, this still applies. If you don't do this, the game won't work.

Each download of Napoleon takes about 11GB, and to install it takes about 22GB (I think the total is 22, not 33GB), if that's helpful to anyone.
Step 4 - Thank You!
Thank you for reading my guide. It is my hope that at least some of you will find this helpful. If you do, likes and favourites would be appreciated as it helps this guide get seen, so it could possibly help more people.

It's my first attempt a guide so any suggestions for improvements to make it more useful, or clearer, would be welcomed.

I write detailed reviews and would like to write more detailed guides, too, in time. If you are interested in seeing those you can follow me on Steam from here or from my profile, by clicking the expand menu under my level, and then 'follow'. This should mean new guides I post appear in your activity feed.

If you have any questions, please get in touch in the comments. If I can help, I will.

Thanks again! I hope you have fun in this old, but still rather brilliant game!
