Basic Combat XP/Drop Farms (Fastest Grind to 100, AFK Options)
By Gary
I designed some pretty basic rooms to give me the drops and xp I need while hanging around my base. I show some photos you can get an idea from. I will update this guide with more farms as I build them. You can scale the farm to any size you want and it will still work. I also show one of the best xp farm rates in the game with photos on how I created it.

Beginner/Progression Friendly XP/Loot Designs
I designed these small and expandable combat xp/loot farms that you can create at whatever part of the game you have made it to. In these examples I am using purple slime ground (found later in game), orange slime ground, and the larva ground. There are 1 4x8 spawn platforms for each monster.

I first marked the 3 4x8 platforms

Placed the 3 spawn items on the ground over the platforms. Removed the floor over the larva ground to see what it looks like. After a couple days of testing I have not seen any larva or gotten any larva drops with the floor tiles on top of the larva. The slime works. The following photos will have the larva covered with floors but do not do that.

Built a wall around to prevent escaping.

These are larva spike traps, they can be picked up with a shovel in the clay biome. Don't step on them cause they will damage you so you will have to walk over the platforms to collect loot. Leave gaps so you can walk between platforms. Not recommended to do this because tin is easy to get for spike traps.

If you want to use spike traps instead you can do this. It cost 1 tin per 1 spike trap.

When you have scarlet and iron you can make 5 conveyer belts or +1 per skill point under the skill in crafting up to a total of 10 belts made per 1 iron and 1 scarlet bar.

If you have extra iron and scarlet to move them off the spawn faster and into your traps or kill chamber.

If you want to set up automatic kills for drops only, no xp.

If you want to set up an xp farm. You can melee or range the enemies safely from here.If monsters leak when far from base/farm, remove the last conveyor belt (the one that pushes into the void)
XP/Drop Farm
It took me about 20 hours of grinding this mob farm to get from 77-100 range (I took off my gear only half the time, i did not respec my stats all all, and I also gained a lot of vitality levels). If you let them pile up every hour and kill them you get a lot of xp very fast. Take off all gear that gives offensive bonuses and reset your skill trees that give offensive bonuses. If you swing slower, you can let them regen some more hp for extra hits. Once you kill them all you can go inside the farm and kill the tentacles for even more xp. I got really good at dodging a bunch of the stun shots at once by periodically clearing tentacles.
Here is the updated kill chamber that does not allow mobs to glitch into your base when far away and returning to base. I believe what makes the leaked mobes are the conveyor belts that push toward a water gap or wall when you are about two screens away. I removed the last conveyor belt and they still pile up in almost the same spot. This requires you to either go inside the farm to get the drops (but will be on the closest tile) or set up a robotic arm to grab the drops but I am not sure how that works with mobs around. I will be testing this later.

WARNING If you are too far away they will glitch past the water and into your base if you build your kill chamber like I did in the next couple of photos. The above photo shown is the fix.
If you wish to get xp, this is the way. At least this way you can have mobs pile up in front of your doorstep or in a window inside your base and safely melee and range them. If you want more xp and less drops (only melee and ranged, not HP), switch to bad gear and respec your stats but dont allocate any stat points. I mainly use the blowpipe as I am training 100 ranged. Two similar kill chambers are shown. Don't get too close to the door or they will break in. If you let too many pile up the conveyor they will get stuck but they are easy to kill. Make the path a bit wider if they get stuck too often but this works for me.

The inside of this is 20x32 but I am going to extend it to 32x96. I'm just collecting the mold ground. I can post a guide on the fastest way to obtain a lot of mold ground if enough people are interested.

Here is less than 10 mins of staying near my base without killing any mobs. Unsure what the mob cap is.

I expanded it to 64x32 and now I have so many conveyor belts that they are turning invisible. Here's a pic of the map to see the size.

Whenever a lot of mold creatures built up around a corner I had to go inside and kill them so I expanded the area a little where they pile up at. I also removed the door that was there because if it was full, the guys would start phasing through the door and into my base. I found at least 7 mold creatures wandering around in my base.

If you create a macro on your keyboard you can full auto level up against these guys. I used the Rune Song because it does not take durability. You could also tie a rubber band or a weight to your mouse button or controller trigger. The faster you kill the mold creatures the more tentacle creatures can spawn. After 90 minutes afk I leveled up my melee from 45-51. The entire room was convered in tentacle creatures and they were very hard to clear out. I died 5 times killing about 60 tentacles in the room. If I would have let the mold creatures build up and cleared them out every 20-30 minutes there will be a lot less tentacle creatures in the room, maybe only 10 or 15 total after 90 minutes of this method. (BTW the 'missing' conveyor belts in the picture are actually just invisible and they still work properly)

This is what it looks like after 20 mins of afk. This is about the least you can expect with 1 player online near the base for 20 minutes.

This is about 2 hours of afk just standing in my base (they continue off screen to the right). You may notice I added spike traps inside my base, this is not because of leaks but sometimes I leave a door open accidentally and they get in so it helps me not die 10 times trying to clear out the base.
Best Melee XP Rates
Currently, you gain melee and range xp per hit so more hits equal more xp. You gain vitality xp per kill. If you want to gain the most xp per hour out of your farm you're going to want to do a little bit of preparation beforehand.

  • Take off all gear that gives you damage bonus or crit chance/damage bonus

  • Use worst weapon you have (I made 5 copper swords and repaired whenever they all broke). If you use your fist, it may target the ground and you will start ripping up the conveyor belts.

  • Respec all skills that give you bonus damage overall and for melee specifically

  • Put as many points into quick strikes and fast and furious under melee skill tree to increase attack speed

  • Have the starvation debuff for minimum hits

  • hold mouse button/use band on button/trigger/ use macro to continuously hold right click at kill chamber

  • optional: multiple areas to attack from (shown in my base) in case farm clogs up/gets stuck

With a copper sword and taking off my gear (I did not respec my stats nor did I have starvation debuff) I leveled up from 69 to 71 melee from 3 hours worth of mold creatures (not including the tentacles) 3 hours worth of mobs shown below in the 64x32 mold creature farm.

creatures all the way to the right

Currently I am testing how many levels after letting 3 hours of mold creatures spawn and using all above bullet points. So far I can't tell if I've killed more than spawned since starting but I still have hundreds of creatures left over and I have leveled from 73 to 77 melee. I am using all above bullet point methods at once to make this happen.

Update: after killing the guys manually and switching where I stand (cause they sometimes wont move and you cant reach them for a minute) until 77 melee, I switched to full afk for 5 hours for sleep and leveled up from 77-81 melee and also ate to full to do a little more damage. They can spawn faster than you can kill them if you don't move spots when they get stuck. Also forgot to close the door so the overflow can wander and get pushed out. Didn't think it was too much of a problem but spike traps wont kill mold creatures anymore if they aren't aggroed and there are at least 100 blow my base that escaped lol.

I killed off half of the mold creatures but left alone all the tentacles then with the max starving debuff I leveled melee from 81-85 and it took 90 minutes to kill them all.

After killing off all mold creatures I turned full auto on and stood at the farm for 30 minutes swinging with a full inventory of copper swords and had max debuffs (i think). I leveled up fully from 85-86 more than 1 full bar of xp worth. I did this without clearing out all the escaped mold creatures from the door being open. There was also 6+ hours worth of tentacles still alive inside the farm as well.

I finished off the rest of the xp and got 100 melee. Took less than 10 hours from 86-100. I noticed that you can use your fists (instead of a copper sword) just fine if you are in the right spot but it has less reach and you only hit 1 mob at a time instead of 1-4+.

For a new test, I created a brand new character and after 1 hour, i had 40 vitality, 29 melee, 11+ range, and several other stats. I started off with all debuffs and a copper sword but I wasn't able to kill any of the guys so it was just pure melee xp which is great but I wanted to test with kills. In order to get kills I had to eat back to full and put on some gear but I used the copper sword for all of the guys in my farm. I accidentally turned some conveyor belts which created another massive leak but I killed them all off with some weapons and spike traps. If I had just been swiping at all the guys inside my farm for 1 full hour instead of only the first 15-20 minutes I would have gained many more levels in this hour but I still think this is a very good test. I recorded the entire video, if anybody is interested I can share the full unedited video.
Best Range Xp Rates
As stated in the melee rates section, melee and range xp is currently gained per hit so it is best to do fast attacks with low damage.

  • Take off all gear that gives you damage bonus or crit chance/damage bonus

  • Use range weapon (I prefer the blowpipe because the mold farm supplies blowpipes and it attacks fast with low damage)

  • Respec all skills that give you bonus damage overall and for range specifically

  • Put as many points into rapid shots to increase ranged attack speed

  • Have the starvation debuff for minimum hits

  • hold mouse button/use band on button/trigger/ use macro to continuously hold right click at kill chamber

  • optional: multiple areas to attack from (shown in my base) in case farm clogs up/gets stuck

Shown below is 3 hours worth of mold creatures from my 64x32 mold farm design

Loot Drop Farm Only
If you want your room to only collect drops over time, you can design it like this. Requires 1 tin per spike trap and 1 spawn item (orange or purple slime shoveled from ground/larva ground/mold ground) Slime will spawn even if spike traps are over them but I do not like having to have the set to remove slime slowness and poison. I am not sure if other mobs spawn on spikes but I believe they do. If you wish to farm for cavelings you must be near or in the forgotten ruins as far as I know.

There are 8 4x16 purple slime spawns and the same of orange slime spawns. I have made over 500 potions from the slime here. Make the room and spawning areas as large as you want to make it. The double layers of spikes kill the purple slime much faster than 1 layer can do. Orange slime do not need this but I'm not going to make a separate room yet or make this part of the room look different just to save some tin. Keep in mind that this room design is not just for slimes which is why I chose the design shown. This room works for all spawns but biome specific mobs have to have the farm located in that biome (cavelings, farmers, caveling snipers, shamans, groot or whatever big guys name is, etc)

I may eventually make this room larger and just cover the entire floor in slime floor and conveyor belts and have a small auto kill area because you get more per bar used. (10 per 1 iron 1 scarlet if maxed out the perk in skill tree under crafting) plus you no longer have to run around to pick up the drops. Most likely I will leave this room and build another slime farm more than a couple screens away.

Other Designs and Combinations
From my testing, if you place a spawner item like slime or the larva ground on top of the mold ground, it will take over the spawn and that tile can no longer spawn a mold creature. Keep this in mind for a combination farm so you don't waste mold ground like mine does in this design. I removed all the slime ground from the mold ground. If I extend this, which I likely wont because I hit a glitch limit with the conveyor belts. Can place more but random become invisible until exit and save. When this glitch is fixed if possible, I will make this room 64x64 and the new area will spawn slimes and larva.

I removed all the purple slime under the conveyor belts

I broke the walls between the room and hall of my base for the kill chamber so I can run between the 3 blocks side-to-side for agility xp while I swing my sword for 100 melee.

You get the full spawn rate in a chunk with way less than full coverage, so you could dig out a lot of the space to use fewer belts. If you push it too low the tentacles would clog it us faster, but you'd also notice and have an easier time clearing them I suspect.

Ah that's a shame, i'll try out my farm when i get a chance next weekend

uhm 30x20. got a spawn every 5 - 10 minutes or so. yesterday it was 15 minutes and there was this 5 creatures in my colletion room. its strange but i think they fixed the spawn rates. :/ sadly

how large of an area is spawn-able and how close do you stand to it?
Gary  [author] 1 May, 2022 @ 3:54pm
@Black7en Possibly, I haven't been following the game since my last update to the guide earlier in April

So no Spawns for me.. got 3 - 5 Creatures in 15 Minutes. Did they fix the rates?
Gary  [author] 7 Apr, 2022 @ 1:13pm
so the farm will not spawn very many guys if you are too far away unfortunately but if you follow the best xp rates section you can hit 100 in combat skills very quickly and just set your farm to auto kill when you are done

thanks I'll give it a shot. Yes, the ground has fumes coming off it. Typically I head off to explore then come back to check on it.

Possibly you don't need to increase the size but just make sure you aren't directly next to it. It can be on screen but kinda off to the side or bottom/top of the screen.

Not entirely sure 100%, but I've noticed inside my actual gardening farm, my 1x64 strip of tilled mold ground occasionally spawns maybe 1 or 2 guys. There has been maybe 4 or 5 total spawns in there the entire time, however the 64x32 farm has spawned thousands. Specifically for the mold farm, i'd suggest maybe making it a little larger and make sure you aren't too close to it. Also check to see if your 15x15 plot has the mold fumes coming from the ground.
