Intro
Experienced players kick or yell at you?

This guide attempts to teach and imrove your gameplay while assuming that you know the basics of the game, such as:
  • how to handle the SI/Special Infected (Hunter, Smoker, Jockey, Charger, Spitter, and Boomer)
  • how to pickup and use the weapons and supplies (Pipe bombs, Molotovs, Adrenalineshot, Pills, Medipacks)
  • sharing in-game supplies with teammates
  • see other guides below for "competitive" elements

Basic and advanced scavenge tricks can be found in Mr. Crush guide below (highly recommended).
Quick guide – What is scavenge
Two teams play against each other.

A match has 99 % of the time 5 rounds , also known as "three to win".

Within a round, each team plays both sides: Survivor and Special Infected (SI).
The survivors play against the time/countdown and SI.
The SI try to kill or slow down the survivors.

Win condition:
  • fill generator with more cans than the other team
  • or same amount of cans, but quicker
  • play so well, that the other team leaves xd

Start-countdown:
  • As long as no one leaves the field at the start, you get some seconds to equip yourself.
  • Before you run out of the field, check if everyone is moving!
  • "Wait", can also mean "wait for more players". Do not decide on your own to start the round.
  • After the start-countdown ends, the rounds starts automatically! Be quick, but careful.

Timer/countdown:
  • Once the round starts, the countdown is started.
  • Each can, poured into the generator, will increase the time left by 20 seconds, thus you won't get timed out so long as you are filling the gen.
  • If the timer is 0, the round ends. Unless someone holds a can - then the timer stays at 0 until the can in hand is lost or filled into the generator. See also "time management" below.
.
Time management:
Collect several cans at the same time, transport them to the generator (teamwork!) and fill them.
Running forth and back for one can is a waste of time.
It needs experience, to know where and how many cans to collect. Every scavenge map has common tactics.
Often the team needs to adjust to a situation on the fly.

Timer zero, but game does not stop?
Someone is holding a can! Protect them and they can fill it.
Sometimes the team goes together, to get another can as insurance. If one drops it, match still goes on, because there is still someone holding a can.

Stay calm and focused!
Time pressure shouldnt make you forget about dangers, like an already spawned charger, waiting for you.
Survivor and Infected work best as team. A good time to go collecting is when all 4 infected attacked and are on respawn-time.
Do not run alone, unless you are 100 % sure they are on cooldown. Always check if a teammate is with you, check if someone needs protection from you.

Example match, points, rounds...
Match overview, example
The match overview can be viewed any time, by pressing TAB(ULATOR).
Its also shown at the end of rounds.

What is a round? Did we win? What happened in this match?

Lets analyse this example:

Upper row: "My team"
Round 1:
both teams filled 21, but my team filled them quicker! yay!
Won the round. We will be infected first, at next round.

Round 2:
Other team started as survivor, filled 21.
My team: maybe a can fell off the roof or we simply were not able to fill 21.
Lost the round.

Round 3:
Like round 2, but sides reversed. As zombies we were able to make "minus one" or just killed them all, before they filled 21.

Round 4:
Other team started as survivor. They filled all cans.
As survivors my team died quickly after filling only 7.
Lost round.

Round 5:
This round is still going on. Its 2 : 2, whoever wins this round, wins the match.
Important do’s and don’ts
  • Be humble, say you are new, but willing to learn.

  • “Fill noob” – “Don’t collect”:
Good players can collect cans quickly, but someone needs to fill them. Avoid being bold and (on the roof map) jumping down to collect cans.

  • You are much more useful, if you fill cans. Beware: do not let the team die though. Always have a look around to check if someone needs help.

  • If someone says “adre”/adrenaline: Step aside! Let them fill or help someone up etc

  • Boomed? Stop filling and step away from generator, drag the zombies to you and someone else can fill. But DO NOT wander away from your teammates far too much as they can help you against horde swarm. It also unadvisable for the fact that you are an easier prey to get incapped when you are blinded by bile and have a garrison of commons wall you in.

  • Tipps are often for both sides: Spit burns cans, as spitter, do try to burn cans.. As boomer try to explode near a can to throw them off of the building etc.

Cans
Burn, if you shot them. Do not shot cans, unless you know what you are doing.
Fire and burning cans will burn other cans. Do not throw cans “over the fire”, they most likely catch fire.
Spit burns yellow cans, save them! Jump into the spit, grab the can and throw it away.

Boomer
Do not shot a boomer nearby a yellow can! (unless you know what you are doing)
Explosion by a boomer can make the nearby cans fly off the roof. It will not respawn.

Spitter
Spit(er) makes yellow cans burn: quickly jump into it and throw them out or at least save nearby cans from starting to burn too.Make sure the survivor CAN'T come rescue the cans in time before the spitter acid lights them. So timing of spit attack is essential.

CHARGER and Jockey or Smoker
They work together, to charge someone off the roof. If you are one of them, look where the other infected are. Jockey/Smoker catch a survivor in a good position, to help the charger to charge them off the roof (kill).. See also the Mr. Crush guide below.

Dictionary / Vocabulary
Communication is very important! Pay attention, to what people are saying and act accordingly to the situation.

Many common things, that are mentioned here in short, are explained very well (pictures, videos) in Mr. Crush's guide.

Can location names ROOF map
  • Easy cans
  • Heli / Helipad
  • Corner, 2
  • 4, 4 cans, front 4
  • Long
  • Hard cans, h3
  • Back cans, side cans, 1
Other names do exist, they can be added here too. Comment and i ll edit.
Survior:
"i am going there, cover me".
On the roof map: cover from above, do not go down with them. Try to block places, where SI could spawn.
SI:
"Let's try to get them there"
"I think they will go there next"
"They are already at <CAN-NAME>"

"Spitter / Hunter, ready?" / Candrop
Many yellow cans on the map?
Burn them! Time lost for survivors, they need to recollect them. More chances for SI to kill.

Candrop often happens when survivors are about to fill cans.
  • Many cans are around the generator.
  • Spitter spits on cans.
  • Hunter (sometimes Jockey or Smoker) help, by attacking at the same time, eventually making them drop a can too, survivor cant save a can etc.
  • The cans will lay in spit and burn, burning cans will burn other cans...
  • Depending on situation and persons involved: Hunter or Spitter goes first. A perfect timing situation. If spawned too early, survivors will be warned and spread out the cans.
Surivor:
Its a warning: careful, they are trying a candrop. Spitter alive.

"CHARGEEEERRRR"
Survivor:
Warning, charger alive or going to spawn to kill you :)
"charger dead" means its rather save to collect. If you are the newcomer, let others collect.
Si:
If you are the charger, look for a smoker or jockey. Go to their position, to work together for a karma charge / kill / charge off roof. The other SI captures them, charge can charge them off.

"Boomer"
As Boomer, you can make a can fly off the roof (can doesnt respawn) or to unreachable places (can be shot and burned for a respawn).
Place yourself near yellow cans and jump. If you die (shot, fire, scratched), the explosion can catapult the cans really far.

"Scratch me"
Look for boomer near a can and scratch to kill them. See above.

"Minus / - / jump"
A can fell off the roof, it will not respawn (though, there are tricks to try to get it back ).
Survivor:
If its the second half of a round and the other team filled all cans, you can not win this round.

"Jump":
Make sure you team is saying this. Maybe its a trap-message from the other team (or information about minus, for fair play).
Everybody suicides, by jumping off the roof. Avoid waiting until the time is over. Its a team decision though, someone might want to try to recover the can.

"Time"
Important when the other team filled all cans on the map. Your team needs to fill all, but quicker.

Example:
Other team filled all cans. Your team needs to get 1 more can and fill it.
Other team rest time was 02:14. Your time now 01:30. Your team lost the round. Its not possible to get more time, with that one can.

Decisions about rather wait and try to kill or just delay them for 10 seconds, are based on this.

"Adre / Adrenaline / on a shot - shot / I fill - let me fill"
With Adrenaline you do many actions quicker.
Newcomers:
If someone says "i got adre", means: step aside, let me do. Either filling cans or helping a teammate.

You can help a good team, by filling cans in the generator. Try to find adrenaline early on.
Once there are some yellow cans lying around, inform team via chat or voice. Take the adre and start filling quickly. Careful about the spitter, who probably just waited for you to take the adre...

Other players might want to give you their adre. Take your pills, to free the slot.

Kicks / Kick reasons
First rule:
do not take it too personal!

Second rule:
figure out, why you got kicked.

There are always 2 sides.
Imagine you join a team and they had 2 people burning cans or not even trying to save them from spit. You dont know about that.
You are too slow to save a can/common infected was in the way. From the other perspective, they think you might be the next one, to not know that you need to save cans. They take no chance and rather kick you, then to rely on you.

Many reasons for kick, sometimes its just "wrong place, wrong time"
They kicked me for one simple mistake
  • Maybe it was the 10th mistake? You are new and do not recognise how much you messed up.
  • In scavenge every second counts. Sometimes there is simply not enough time to analyse if it was a mistake, trolling, not caring etc. In the heat of the action, people tend to get rid of a potential danger quickly.
  • Communication: let your team know, that you know you messed up. Otherwise they might assume that you dont even know what to do...

"slot for good-player-friend"
There is no matchmaking system. Newcomers and experienced players are thrown together randomly.
If there is an ongoing match with 7 very experienced players, they either:
  • silently agree on keeping a weak player. Giving them a chance to learn
or
  • kick weak player, bot is the better reliable player in a tough match.
  • a friend messaged that they want to join...

Got kicked a second after joining
Possible reasons:
  • judging by name. Especially when there is steam-sales, many newcomers test out the different modes, have a look and leave. --> imagine having a match with 5 people, that stay for 1 minute and they do not know how to pickup pills or cans. They simply dont have the patience anymore :)
  • a players game crashed and they wanted to come back and you accidently took their slot
  • player died, wanted to rejoin to take over the bot and the team rather wants that guy and not you (the unkown player)
  • if you tried you luck in several scavenge matches: maybe somone remembers you (in a bad light). "the guy who - let cans burn - didnt take pills - went afk"...

More will be added to this section.

am still thinking about how to make it shorter. like make it 2 guides maybe even. one mini and then this slightly longer but still basics.
