"I use pan-pastels, which are like pastel sticks or pencils but in a small pan. I make the outline then look at the values of the light and shadow, where the light is coming from. Then begin to build up layers by blocking in the colours. I do several layers, then the fine detail on the last layer using pastel pencils for the feather details, eyes etc."
