2022 Skyrim SE 10th Anniversary Load Order Guide & Basics+ for 1.6.353
By Vlad 254
A mod list walkthrough geared towards Bug Fixes, Gameplay, Graphics & a Stable Game for Skyrim SE 1.6 This list is designed in keeping with Skyrim lore. There is no need to downgrade your game. Works for both the updated or upgraded Skyrim SE v1.6.353 - Tutorials included.

This guide is for modding game version 1.6.353, and since that version is now outdated make sure you know your way around a mod manager and that you pay attention to mod version numbers - otherwise we all should be modding the latest version of this game.

*Update: 6/03/2023
The new 1.6.640 Guide is now published. You can get it Here

I spend more time testing mods, load orders and working on my guides than I do playing this excellent game. And I enjoy every minute of it. A New load order guide has been completed and is now in the playtesting mode. Stay tuned.

Maybe you used my other SSE Modding guide before. Well that one is still going strong and I've decided to put one together for the 1.6.353 version of SSE. The mod list is very stable and I've carefully picked out these mods and tested the load order as I built it. I'm always testing.

A Word About Game Pass
The script extender better known as SKSE64 is a hard requirement for many mods (a soft req. for others) in this guide. A good number of those mods are for stability and bug fixes. Because SKSE can't be used with Game Pass you can't use those mods so if you're a Game Pass owner and you see a few mods you like just make sure they do not require SKSE64 otherwise this guide unfortunately can not support Game Pass.

Although it's been a bit of a rough several months between health and intermittent internet and a defective brand new PC (which has been replaced) I still managed to maintain working on this guide (although not as much as I'd have liked to). Now I'm all setup and have finished the new guide.

Thanks for your support and patience.
Downgrading
I do not recommend downgrading your game as most mods have been updated for the latest game version (1.6.640) or do not require updates. I feel it's always best to run the latest version when it comes to modding Skyrim. Also some mods require the latest version of this game and we will most likely see this trend continue.

The best solution has always been protecting your game from updates. But if you're reading this you most likely skipped those simple but ever so important steps. So stop the madness from ever happening again by protecting your game. We'll cover the simple steps involved in a minute.
Poll
The guide I'm working on currently is about 520 mods although that number includes about 100 optional mods. Fact is with mods like Legacy of the Dragonborn (which would be optional) the total of plugins for that one mod is about 45 once you include all the patches. Bottom line is that you can use far less than the 520 mods included in the guide if you wanted to. So my question is:
Would you use a guide with 500 mods?[strawpoll.com]
Caution
Please see the following thread before contemplating removing Creation Club Content
(I never remove any of mine - just patch them with the proper patches I have listed later in the guide then either use the CC content in game or ignore them)

I have set this guide up for all to use. New, relatively new, experienced, there is a load order here for all. Like I said, it's not complicated unless we make it so.

Have Fun
Enjoy setting up your mod list from this guide. I have carefully chosen from the very best mods available. I recommend you take them all if your PC can handle it and if you have some basic knowledge to start with.

you also can use this load order and add to it but you must pay close attention to compatibility, requirements and conflicts as you add or choose (some of these mods depend on each other) so be very careful - if you use the entire guide and watch where I give options you'll be fine

Already well versed in modding? Jump down to the "Let's Get Started" section of this guide.
Screenshots
Couple of comparison screenshots With and Without ENB for this small mod list
use "without enb" link for comparisons.

Adding an ENB
Adding an ENB to your game can reduce your FPS anywhere from 6 or 8 fps to as much as 20 fps normally this will vary depending on your PC specs, and the mods you use. With this mod list I usually lose somewhere between 5 and 13 fps depending on where I'm at in the game. Some areas of this game will be affected more than others for example certain areas around Riverwood and Riften can drop your fps by 15 or more. This is normal. What is not normal is going over 60 fps. Do not go over 60.

to give you an idea if you're on the fence regarding using an ENB - not the best examples

New mod users
I recommend that you read through this guide's outline leading up to installing your first mod.

Take your time and read through this Guide at least once before attempting to mod your game.
Also follow any linked information like mod manager video tutorials. Modding is not plug & play so there is some basic information to absorb and learn in order to successfully build a stable modded game. But if you don't skip any steps and do a little reading along the way you'll be fine.

The above pertains regardless of whichever guide you choose to follow or when modding on your own. This guide in many ways is the result of a group effort. Some of you know I'm in the Steam forums daily where I continue to learn and gather the information included here. There are also several of us in the forums daily for any questions you may have as you go. So sit back, relax, grab a beverage, take your time, and take breaks when needed.

Do not skip anything and you'll eliminate most problems.
Windows Explorer
Make sure you can view your file extensions in your Windows folders properly
Since we will often be working in our Windows Explorer Folders when modding our game we will need to be able to see the file extensions.
By default, Windows Explorer will not show file extensions (Ex: .bsa .exe, .dll, .esp, or .txt)
I'll use Windows 10 as an example.

  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. Select the View tab at the top
  3. Select Details
  4. Check the box next to File name extensions
  5. Check the box next to Hidden items
(File name extensions is the most important check box)

Windows 11 is: View / Show / File Name Extensions
3 Things to remember before you start
Time Tested
The next few sections of this guide that lead to the mod list are a must read. These methods have always insured that my game ran smooth with no crashes and so far with the 1.6.xxx update the result has once again been proven true. Please do not skip these sections.

1. Start Clean. Before you mod your game make sure you have a clean slate. The simple process of a clean install will ensure your base is solid before you start adding mods.

2. Skyrim SE is a great game to mod which in turn makes it a great game to play. Bethesda gave us access to the Creation Kit and the flip side to that is game updates. That's the nature of the beast. Whatever you do make sure you protect your game from updates. Doing so will ensure you can play your modded game uninterrupted until not only SKSE is updated but until other mods that might also need updating are updated. Don't wait for the next update to protect your game. Get in that habit now. Besides, you may never want to update your game again. Many don't.

3. Do NOT remove mods mid-game. Get in the habit of knowing which mods you want for your game before you start modding. Sometimes we let our eyes get bigger than our stomach as they say. We do not need to install every mod we think looks good. You're building something special so let's not start removing mods at the first sign of trouble. Learn how to troubleshoot your game properly or ask for help in the forums or on the mod page of the mod you think is giving you problems because removing mods mid-playthrough can be detrimental to your game to the point it's unplayable.

Everything mentioned above is covered in the next few sections

Just as important
PLEASE RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO USE CONSOLE COMMANDS
unless you know exactly what you are doing

KEEP YOUR FPS AT 60 OR LOWER
Enjoy the game the proper way
With my PC (RTX 2070, i7-8700) I used to pick 4K for my mods but with this mod list I chose all 2K and the game looks fantastic. I also play at 2560x1440 and I'm getting a solid 60 FPS. There is no need to go over 60fps because the game was originally designed for 30fps and going over 60 will break quests and have objects flying all over the place.
First Things First - Cleanup & Drivers
REGARDLESS IF YOU HAVE ATTEMPTED TO MOD YOUR GAME BEFORE OR NOT I RECOMMEND THESE STEPS.

IF YOUR GAME IS IN PROGRAM FILES YOU ARE BETTER OFF AT LEAST MOVING THE GAME OUTSIDE OF PROGRAM FILES.

The updated game has caused issues for many and after spending much time in the forums helping folks this has been a sure fire fix for many. You can skip it but if we're going to do this let's do it correctly right from the jump. By not starting with a true clean slate we are only asking for trouble which will in turn lead to frustration and many wasted hours of your time. This is also something you should do after every unsuccessful attempt at modding your game.

START CLEAN - this is more than a simple uninstall/reinstall but it's quick. I also recommend installing Skyrim SE out of Program Files in order to get away from UAC: Read more Here
https://youtu.be/g67CnHD1wvY Later we will be launching your game one time from your Steam Library to the Skyrim Special Edition settings window (that will be the last time we launch from there). We will get to that in the "Let's get Started" section in a few minutes.

if you have or had mods installed & do not want to spend time deleting them one by one see the Removing ALL mods section in my Vortex Guide

Mod sites
Let's get setup for downloading and installing mods
There are very few sites that I download my mods from. That said we need to make sure the sites we use are not only reputable but also that they carry the correct mod versions for the game version we are playing. This guide will walk you through the process of getting setup properly and then once we start adding mods will make sure you are installing mods that work properly for this game.

THERE IS NO STEAM WORKSHOP FOR SKYRIM SE

These are all Free mod sites and we need them for this guide
If you can mod it, they'll host it.
"Nexus Mods host 320,082 files for 1,360 games from 130,728 authors serving 28,003,702 members with 4,895,643,266 downloads to date. They support modding for many PC games.

1. *Nexus Mods - Register Free [www.nexusmods.com]
Nexus is the largest site for mods with over 28 million users & over 4 Billion downloads to date.

2. AFK Mods - Register Free[www.afkmods.com] This site hosts many of the best and well known mods and is run by Arthmoor one of the most reputable names in the modding community.

Important: Create your accounts for Nexus Mods, and AFK Mods before proceeding

These are also Free and do not require registration
each site includes a vital file we will be using:
Once we get started we will be downloading a couple of files from:
3. Mod DB (For "Forests of Dibella SSE" tree mod)
4. enbdev.com (for ENB binary)
5. skse.silverlock.org (for SKSE64)
6. I also have some files on my google drive. Some are too large to scan but I have scanned them all and thousands of users have downloaded these files for their load orders.
NET 6.0[dotnet.microsoft.com] Not a mod but we will need both the x64 and the x86 versions for Nemesis Animation Framework and for the Synthesis Patcher

Plugin Limit and Selecting Mods in this guide
As you mod your game please keep in mind that Skyrim has a limit of 255 plugins. Anything above this esp/esm limit and the game crashes. By installing every mod presented in this guide you'll be fine. You start off right out of the gate with 5 game plugins which brings us down to 250 available. ESL's do not count towards that limit. Don't overthink this at least for now because as I said using this guide will keep you below that limit while allowing more than 255 mods. Many of the mods I've chosen for this guide are "flagged as .esl" and these mods do not count towards that limit. Also keep in mind some specific mods in this guide can easily be manually flagged as .esl by you. There are only a very few included in this guide and I'll show you how to use Vortex to flag them in one click. Just make sure you follow the guide because you need to know which mods are safe to flag and which mods absolutely can not be flagged or your game will break. Want more info on this? See Article below.

The Golden Goose (from arthmoor)
Files with the ESL flag are given special treatment with their form IDs. Upon loading into the game, the form IDs are remapped into the FE mod index. This is now considered a special slot in SSE and should not be occupied by any mods in your load order. Not even the Bashed Patch or any other form of merged data.

As a result of this new support, the engine can allow you to bypass the previously hard limit of 255 plugin files. The theoretical limit now should be 4096 ESL flagged mods. Individual files flagged as ESL can in theory hold up to 4096 form ID records. In practice this ends up actually being 2048 form ID records because the engine reserves everything from $0x0000 to $0x07FF. All files using ESL flags must therefore contain their internal form IDs between xx000800 and xx000FFF. Anything exceeding this range is invalid and the game will either crash or you'll have severely corrupted data due to overruns.

Q: What is all this I keep hearing about using LOOT?

A: To keep this short simply think of LOOT as a guide and only a guide for sorting the order in which the game loads your mods. Vortex has LOOT's API coded into it thus will give you suggestions when it comes to conflicting mods as to which one should load first. But in the end it's up to you to set and apply those changes. We always must read each mod's information provided by the mod author and apply this to what Vortex/Loot suggests based on other mods in our load order. When ever I build a load order for a guide I take all of that into consideration (along with my testing) and will provide that load order information where needed next to each mod in the guide.

Bottom line: Follow this guide step by step and in the process you'll take important steps towards learning to mod this fantastic game.

Anyone who tells you one mod manager is better than another - Vortex and MO2 were made by the same person. One is better at some things than the other. They are both outstanding mod managers
Regarding Cleaning of master files
This section is in regards to cleaning the game's master files.

To clean or not to clean
You'll actually be better off not cleaning your Masters or Creation Club Content.

For those of you that have cleaned or heard about cleaning master files in the past.
There was an issue in an update to xEdit's QuickAutoClean which the xEdit team later said they fixed but we don't feel it's been properly corrected. On top of that cleaning your Masters was never a "Must do" type of thing unless your load order was, say for example over 500 mods. The short of it is - Do NOT clean your Masters using xEdit's QuickAutoClean. This includes Masters from the Anniversary Edition content.

Remove this using xEdit (NOT AutoQuickClean)
You can still remove the edit made to the Dawnguard.esm that blocks an official fix to the update.esm (I know Bethesda right) with SSEEDIT. These steps are not actually cleaning and are outline by GamerPoets at the mark 5:37 mark of this video.
Protect Your Game
Important
Make sure that when an update comes out for this game you won't receive it until you are ready as there is always a very high chance some mods won't function and you will not be able to play your game until the mod or mods are updated by that mod author. Fortunately we can avoid this very easily. Simply follow the link below and take a minute to protect your game.

Protect your Game from Updates until you're ready:
I wrote a short tutorial for this so simply follow the "These simple steps" link below.
These simple steps will let you play uninterrupted (also included - keeping a backup)

And please do not start removing mods mid game at the first sign of problems (you won't find problems with this guide if you follow it but I'm giving you this for future reference). Read more here.

Important Note:
Although you won't need a crash log for this guide please be aware that:
Net Script Framework will NOT work on this version of Skyrim SE
Crash Logger is what is needed for this version (1.6.353) of the game.
Let's get started.....
Are you sure you're ready to start? Did you follow the previous sections? If so let's go...

This Guide is for SSE (Anniversary) version 1.6.353 - The Guide for 1.5 can be found here

*Important reminders!

Do Not use mods from the in-game mod menu with this guide
The in-game mod menu offers Bethesda Mods but the problem is that it also tries to manage the mods and the Bethesda "Mod Manager" is wonky at best. Matter of fact Bethesda doesn't even support it. So I stay completely away from it. But if you absolutely must have a mod from it then go into the "Extensions" section of Vortex and install the "Import from Bethesda" extension. Then proceed at your own risk.

Do not add your own mod selections unless you are an experienced mod user
Stick to the mods listed in this guide unless you are sure of what you are doing otherwise I really can't help you with any issues that you experience with your game.

Also pay close attention to my notes on "Rules" where added, as we often need to go against what Loot/Vortex suggests and in those cases it makes a huge difference in your game on the plus side. Remember Loot/Vortex is correct approx. 90ish% of the time, the other 10-15% of the time is crucial that we use what I type for "Rules" which is based on various factors including what other mods are in this particular load order and of course extensive play testing.

Please Note:
ALWAYS BE AWARE OF WHICH VERSION YOU ARE DOWNLOADING ON EACH MOD PAGE
What we are looking for is mods for game version 1.6.353 or mods that have "NG" in the mod name or version nomenclature or some confirmation the mod works for this (1.6.353) version of the game. If there are no notes, for example on texture mods there most likely will not be, then we are fine especially since I'll provide notes where I feel there may be some confusion.

First
From your Steam Library: Launch your game to the settings window only and choose "Options" where you'll make sure your Resolution is correct and your video card most likely will NOT be detected, this is normal so simply choose choose "Ultra", "High", "Medium" or "Low".

Make sure it looks like this by also selecting "Advanced" to open the 2nd window
expand this example graphic if needed[/i] Note: I play @2560x1440 but select your resolution
Select TAA and we want the boxes to look like the above example (with your resolution).

Select OK and Exit.

IF you purchased the $20.00 Anniversary DLC with the 70 additional Creation Club items
And have not yet installed the content you can launch your game to the main menu and install all the Creation Club Content. This should take a few minutes and once it's complete exit the game and continue on with this guide.

I'm leaving ENB for later and it's of course not a requirement
I give you a recommendation of what I normally use with this setup but you really do not "need" one. That said lighting goes a long way towards improving the look of your game and you can install an ENB whenever you like. I always install my ENB after I install my lighting and weather mods. This way I know what my game looks like without an ENB. I do recommend one that looks great with these mods and I explain why later. You'll lose between 5 and 20 fps (frames per second) with an ENB but this game although set for 60fps was originally made for 30. What we don't want is constant large spikes and dips. If you get 40ish you're fine.

IMPORTANT Reminder
Make Sure Your FPS is Set/Locked at 60 max
The game default is 60 fps so as long as you DO NOT change these settings iVSyncPresentInterval=1 which is found in SkyrimPrefs.ini located here: C:\Users\Owner\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition) and DO NOT use mods that intentionally change that you are fine. This is not a multiplayer shooter game and it was originally designed to run at 30 so you'll be more than fine at 60 (or 50, or 40) but the main reason you want your game NOT to run above 60 fps (I use 59) is that everything in the game is tied to the FPS including Quests, Timelines, NPC behavior, and the AI - not to mention things like animals and objects START FLYING AROUND as well as SOUND problems, water flickering, etc. For more info read. Ultimately, the Bethesda developers recommend not doing this. Even with a great PC, you could find that you encounter a bunch of problems with the game’s physics engine. Then there's the quests which don't care how great your PC is when it comes to how quests fire.
BethINI (Read)
First - Bethini

By now you've already started Skyrim SE from your Steam Library but only to the settings window where you select "options" and you chose Ultra or your desired setting etc. This configured your game's ini files. Now we should optimize them either with a great tool like Bethini or by directly tweaking then in our 2 main ini files.

IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH .INI SETTINGS

*This is optional but Recommended so if you're not sure about .ini settings or what they are then this mod will make a big difference in performance, lighting, and more. On the other hand if you are completely comfortable changing the .ini's and know what you are doing then you probably don't need Bethini.

This is a manual download - install is also manual.

BethINI[www.nexusmods.com] an excellent tool which is kept up to date by the folks from S.T.E.P.

1. Download the Main file to either your downloads folder or your desktop.

2. We will be adding Bethini to your Modding Tools folder. If you don't have a folder for "Modding Tools" create one now somewhere outside of your Skyrim directory folder. (You can also put other tools there such as xEdit and Loot).

3. Unzip the main file and place it inside the modding tools folder.

4. Once you've Downloaded the "BethINI Standalone Version" & moved it to the modding tools folder you created you can run it from there thru the .exe (or from the Vortex dashboard by adding it there - MO2 users do not run this from your dashboard ). Earlier I mentioned you needed to start your game from Steam to the Skyrim settings window and exit your game and what that did was create your ini settings. Now we will optimize them with Bethini.

Launch Bethini:
5. Then make sure "Bethini Presets" is ticked and check the "Recommended" box which will immediately prompt Bethini to make it's Recommended changes. Now we can make a couple of tweaks before we save. Make sure your screen Resolution is correct, and if you want ULTRA is set., uncheck Ambient Occlusion. Other than that make very few changes. You can make NPCs use Ammo if you like but DO NOT change FPS above 60 and DO NOT change Ugrids to load. Then save which also closes Bethini.

Eventually you should learn what these settings do. Until then this will make a huge difference in the way your game runs and looks.

need more help with Bethini? see the mod page.

Also, here are a couple of ini settings you need to double check. You can either make any changes to your ini's through Bethini or - Go to SkyrimPrefs.ini located here: C:UsersOwnerDocumentsMy GamesSkyrim Special Edition
and add any of the lines below that are not currently present under [Display]:
Make sure they are under [Display] bTreesReceiveShadows=1 bShadowsOnGrass=1 bDrawLandShadows=1
SKSE64 & Address Library
9/21/2022 - Important info -
I SUGGEST YOU WAIT FOR MODS TO BE UPDATED BEFORE MODDING YOUR GAME
So far the Unofficial Patch (USSEP), Address Library, and SKSE64 have been updated. I suggest you wait for mods that depend on SKSE64 to also be updated before modding your game. I would not use workarounds or downgraders unless you know exactly what you are doing and even then I'd wait. Enjoy another game for a week, I am.

Note: When I leave a reminder to start up the game and test you should not save your game. Matter of fact turn off all instances of AutoSave (in game menu) and before you exit make sure you delete the Saves the game forces on you even with AutoSaves turned off. You don't need to create your custom character to test (simply take the default character). We will wait until after we complete the Character section and install RaceMenu etc. The "Alternate Start" mod also comes in handy for these quick checks in order to avoid the long cart ride.

The most important issue in testing is to make sure the game boots up. You'll develop a sense of knowing when you think you should check beyond that and do what length.

BEFORE YOU START
Go in the Vortex Mods section and select the gear icon in the upper right hand corner and in the dropdown make sure you check "Dependencies". This way we always have access to each mod's "Rules" (just in case).

First let's make sure these essential files installed properly - they're that important
you may already have it so if prompted to repair choose yes:
1. *Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022. [support.microsoft.com] Take both the x64 and the x86 versions. (x64 for SSE and x86 for Nemesis)

Important Reminder ALWAYS BE AWARE OF WHICH VERSION YOU ARE DOWNLOADING ON EACH MOD PAGE What we are looking for is mods for game version 1.6.353 or mods that have "NG" in the mod name or version nomenclature or some confirmation the mod works for this (1.6.353) version of the game. If there are no notes, for example on texture mods there most likely will not be, then we are fine especially since I'll provide notes where I feel there may be some confusion.

Important
Did you complete the previous section by launching the game one last time from your Steam Library and only run it to the Main Menu then exit the game and also setup Bethini? (if not go back)

Vortex can completely install this for you:
https://youtu.be/gz99xZGA0LA?t=14

Click the 3 vertical dots again
Click the option to Make Primary

3. Address Library for SKSE Plugins[www.nexusmods.com] Use "All in one (Anniversary Edition)" (version 7) This version is backwards compatible with game v1.6.353 / SKSE64 2.1.5
Contains header file and a database to make SKSE DLL plugins version independent easily.
USSEP, SSE Engine Fixes, Scrambled Bugs
3. Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch[www.nexusmods.com] (version 4.2.8) The goal of the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (aka USSEP) is to eventually fix every bug with Skyrim Special Edition not officially resolved by the developers to the limits of the Creation Kit and community-developed tools, in one easy-to-install package.

This Next Mod is a 2 part install - part 1 with Mod Manger and part 2 Manually
4. SSE Engine Fixes (skse64 plugin)[www.nexusmods.com] skse64 plugin to fix various issues with the Skyrim Special Edition engine as well as re-enabling your ability to earn achievements. This is a 2 part install with the 2nd part being manual.
installation instructions for SSE Engine Fixes:
PART 1 - INSTALL Part 1 with Mod Manager use 2nd file: "(Part 1) SSE Engine Fixes for 1.6.629 and newer" version 6.1.1
+
PART 2 - INSTALL Part 2 Manually
use "(Part 2) Engine Fixes - skse64 Preloader and TBB Lib" as per mod page instructions. Which are as follows: Manual Download Part 2 to desktop / extract with 7zip or Winrar / drag the 3 .dll's which are "d3dx9_42.dll", "tbb.dll", and "tbbmalloc.dll" to your Skyrim Special Edition folder located in: SteamLibrarysteamappscommonSkyrim Special Edition
+
NEXT: Settings for SSE Engine Fixes (I use these settings which I highly recommend)
Go to: steamappscommonSkyrim Special EditionDataSKSEPlugins
open EngineFixes.toml with Notepad or Notepad++ (++ will show line #'s)
Line 11: Set MaxStdio to 8192 (Raises max file handle limit from 512 to 2048, which should fix "False Save Corruption" bug in most cases
Line 13: Set RegularQuicksaves to true (I don't use QuickSaves but this is a precaution)
Line 66: Set SaveGameMaxSize to true (Changes max saves from 64MB to 124MB for large load orders and/or long playrthrough's)

FYI: and for future reference. SSE Engine Fixes does everything DLL Plugin Loader does, plus all the engine improvements, so by having SSE Engine Fixes Part2 installed you do not need DLL Plugin Loader. DO NOT USE THE MOD ACHIEVEMENT MODS ENABLER WITH SSE ENGINE FIXES as we do not need it. SSE Engine Fixes does that job.

5. Scrambled Bugs (Anniversary Edition)[www.nexusmods.com] A collection of engine bug fixes and patches. Install Scrambled Bugs (Anniversary Edition) version 18
+
Next: Settings for Scrambled Bugs
Go to: steamappscommonSkyrim Special EditionDataSKSEPlugins
open ScrambledBugs.json with note pad or notepad++ (++ will show line #'s)
Line 37: Set "blackSoulGems": to true (Trap only black souls in black soul gems)
Line 38: Set "underfilledSoulGems": to true (Trap only souls of the appropriate size)
Line 44: Set "equipBestAmmo": to true (Automatically equip your best playable arrows or bolts)
+
(from the Miscellaneous files section of Scrambled Bugs)
Install "Script Effect Archetype Crash Fix"
FOMOD: Make sure 1.6.318.0+ is selected.
+
(from the Optional files section of Scrambled Bugs)
Install "Underfilled Soul Gems - Soul Gem Too Small" this is a lite plugin (FE) which changes the message we receive in-game due to our change in Line 38

6. powerofthree's Tweaks[www.nexusmods.com] version will be selected on FOMOD install (1.6.353). Collection of engine bug fixes and tweaks. SKSE plugin. Also SPID requires it which we'll install later
+ from optional files
6a. INI file

*Optional but Highly Recommended
Skyrim Priority - SKSE[www.nexusmods.com] Unless you set Skyrim SE as High Priority in Task Manager before each Launch THIS MOD Makes Skyrim always take most of CPU usage. Prevents sudden lag caused by other processes. A Must have imo.

7. Alternate Start - Live Another Life 4.1.6[www.afkmods.com] Live Another Life provides an alternative means to start the game for those who do not wish to go through the lengthy intro sequence at Helgen (also an option if you choose). You will be given the opportunity to choose your race and then choose a new life for your character to lead. A wide variety of choices will be available. What you choose will have a lasting impact, so choose carefully or the gods may forsake you again! Remember, when in doubt ask an innkeeper about rumors.

Alternate Start Voiced[www.nexusmods.com] More voice files to complete the mod "Alternate Start - Live Another Life".

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point

I suggest the entire guide however, depending on what you are looking for, you could stop here OR take the UI and/or bug fixes and then stop or build from there or also add the Base Models & Textures. (OR did I mention install the complete guide?)
Creation Club Patches
Unofficial Skyrim Creation Club Content Patches

This bundle of patches for Creation Club DLC content is recommended by the USSEP Team.
I personally would not play without it.

Who needs this?
Anyone who purchased the Anniversary DLC for Skyrim Special Edition which includes an additional 70 CC mods.

So if you only have the base game which includes; Fishing, Saints & Seducers, Rare Curios, and Survival Mode, these patches are covered by the USSEP so you don’t need this patch. (for those interested here's the USSEP version history[www.afkmods.com])

Installation
How do I install this mod?
For Vortex and Mod Organizer 2, attempting to install this mod will automatically bring up an installer. FOMOD: Select "Merged" for the entire DLC (If you are using Wrye Bash, right-click on the mod in your Install tab and choose Wizard to begin the installation process). Yes it's a simple process.

Download with your mod manager
*Unofficial Skyrim Creation Club Content Patches [www.nexusmods.com] This is a bundle of patches to fix the bugs in the Skyrim Creation Club content as well as resolve conflicts between Creation Club mods and the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (USSEP).

Notes
This mod is localized, meaning that translations will appear correctly in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Polish and Russian without needing separate versions. You don't need a separate download to support any of these languages.

*Optional
In-Game Guide to Finding Creation Club Content in Skyrim AE[www.nexusmods.com] Adds a book to your inventory with detailed instructions on how to find all the Creation Club / Anniversary Edition content, because it's easier than exiting the game and scrolling through the Creation Club menu for a short description.

More Fixes to come over time garthand, the mod author for the "Unofficial Skyrim Creation Club Content Patches" is constantly working on and merging this patch collection. I'll let him tell you: "Making them is unfortunately only like 10% of the time, most of the time is spent merging them, making sure the Xbox and PS versions are updated, merging the updated strings files, etc...but the PC version is the first one I complete, and I upload it as soon as it’s done while I continue to work on the XBox and PS versions. " so bear with him. Also, the Bugs tab found on the mod page is where he asks that users report issues so he can easily keep track of and work on them.

What's in the SSE Anniversary DLC ($20 Upgrade): There are over 70 CC items[en.uesp.net]. All previously released Creation Club mod content, some brand new CC Content, including a brand new fishing mechanic.
Optional Starter Pack
*Optional Need a good starting mod that adds a few items to your inventory?
This mod was made by Avrie with this guide in mind. The mod adds base inventory items, and crafting supplies along with a lore friendly starter shack with safe storage. Intended for use with Alternate Start, Live Another Life and provides a nice starter package for your character.
Quickstart for testing guide based load orders[www.nexusmods.com] Four (4) starts to choose from.
Only pick one start from this mod page.
OR
I'll place this here so you are aware that it's included in the above Quickstart mod if you don't want that entire mod.
Alchemical Primer for Caravaniers[www.nexusmods.com] Adds a lore friendly alchemy skill book that includes 8 of my best vanilla potion recipes for players new or trying to improve their alchemy skill. It can be found at two of the more open minded court wizards, an aspiring alchemist, and also in the inventories of the Khajiit caravans.
Base Models & Textures
These mods provide an excellent base texture upgrade and covers a large portion of the game.

Rules for patches must always be AFTER the mods they are patching

9. Static Mesh Improvement Mod - SMIM [www.nexusmods.com] FOMOD install Choose Everything SMIM covers so many details that other mods don't address.

Going Forward: Always choose AFTER SMIM for "Rules" in Vortex. Let everything we add from now on that conflicts with SMIM should load AFTER SMIM.

10. Noble Skyrim (NSM) [www.nexusmods.com]
use 2K version (or Performance version (1K) for weaker systems)
RULE: AFTER SMIM . This mod gives all of Skyrim's architecture a complete new look by changing its textures to custom ones. Also retextures, landscape, dungeons etc. Later we will let some mods override some parts of this mod. This and SMIM is our base.
(GOING FORWARD Always let anything Vortex asks overwrite Noble Skyrim (Same with SMIM)
+
11. NSM - SMIM Patch* [www.nexusmods.com] Patch is on same page as mod #8 (Noble) Look under the UPDATE Section and only download the first file. RULE: After everything Vortex asks.
ALWAYS PLACE YOUR PATCH AFTER THE MODS YOU ARE PATCHING

The above 2 files are the only 2 files you need to use from the Noble Skyrim mod page - Do not install the update file listed on it's mod page as the main file has already been updated.
Bug Fixes
Some needed Bug Fixes that are not included in the Core Mods section of this guide.

12. *Skyrim Landscape and Water Fixes[www.nexusmods.com] In the FOMOD installer select: ELFX, Landscape Fixes for Grass Mods, and SMIM Walkway Wall Fix. Rules: After SMIM. corrects numerous graphic glitches around Tamriel worldspace. YOU WILL GET A "MISSING MASTERS" warning in your mod manager Don't Panic. See note below:

Note: Now go into the Plugins section of Vortex and disable both "landscape and water fixes - patch - lffgm.esp" & "landscape and water fixes - patch - elfx.esp" we will enable them both later after we install ELFX and LFFGM.

Use this next mod if you have the full CC Anniversary Upgrade
Skyrim Landscape and Water Fixes CC Farming compatibility patch[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: After Skyrim Landscape and Water Fixes.
This patch simply reverts the changes from SLaWF so that Rin's wooden sword is accessible and the Goldenhills quest can be completed normally.

13. Unofficial Material Fix[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: AFTER SMIM. Why material bugs need to be fixed? They will cause wrong footstep sounds or just silence them. They will also cause wrong sparks and sounds when weapons or other objects hit on them. Which will suddenly break immersion during playing.

14. Better Jumping SE[www.nexusmods.com] version 1.8.3
Jumping is mediocre in this game. This mod allows jumping while sprinting plus you can configure both jump height & how many times you can jump (double jump like in action games).
You'll need to set the jump height in a text file located HERE:
SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Data\SKSE\Plugins\BetterJumpingSE.txt
Look for this line: "Jump height multiplier for all jumps (always multiplied)" then set to 2 (any higher than 5 and you're in cheat territory lol) if needed see mod page for details.

15. Ice skating fixed for real - No more attack sliding movement Has been MOVED down to the Nemesis section of the guide.

16. Mfg Fix[www.nexusmods.com] version 1.6.0 Fixes "mfg modifier", "mfg phoneme", "mfg reset" console commands and adds new command "mfg info" that shows all currently applied modifiers. also Fixes eyes blinking for player (eyes blinking can be configured in ini file). Fixes stationary eyes issue when using mods that dynamically change character's expressions

+ (same mod page as above - in the optional files section)
17. MfgFix MCM AE to configure eyes blinking and eyes movement in game. Requires MfgFix same version as above 1.6.0

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point

18. Mage Armor Script Fix[www.nexusmods.com] Fix major lag/crashes when for example a group of mages are casting spells that give them armor. I.E. - Oakflesh, Dragonhide, etc.

19. Dragon Stalking Fix[www.nexusmods.com] Been using this version since 2019 and it's never let me down. Dragon corpses will no longer follow you or fall out of the sky. (annoying bug)

20. NARC Remade - No Animals Report Crimes[www.nexusmods.com] Tired of that chicken going up to the guards and being a nark? Annoyed because that one bear ratted you out? Upset because horses are snitches? Then this is the mod for you!

21. Believable Crime Report Radius[www.nexusmods.com] A very simple change that reduces the crime report radius to 1000 units (14m) from the default 4000 units. (57m)

22. No Spinning Death Animation LITE[www.nexusmods.com] Use the 2nd file (Merged). This will simply remove the spinning around dance animation that they do before dying they will now just ragdoll when killed. Works for kills and dying from a high fall. It will not affect killmoves. Includes the Removal of certain creature death pause animations.

23. Stackable Stones of Barenziah with Optional Quest Markers[www.nexusmods.com] [INSTALL THEN DISABLE UNTIL WE INSTALL SKYUI THEN i'LL REMIND YOU TO REENABLE IT]. This mod Fixes Stones of Barenziah to stack properly in the player's inventory. Also adds optional quest markers to Stones of Barenziah.

24. D13 Faster GET UP STAND UP animation vanilla friendly SSE[www.nexusmods.com] I always take bsa over loose files BUT not in this case - take LOOSE. Not a bug per se but did it bug you that it took ages for your Dovahkiin, the strongest creature in Skyrim SOOOOOO long to stand up? Well this will make you stand up twice as fast, and it still looks and is now realistic.

Now that Scrambled Bugs has updated we can install this next mod instead of Flora Respawan Fix
Make sure you ONLY install the No Scripts version of "Wiseman's Flora Fixes" and make sure you have "Scrambled Bugs" installed
25. Wiseman303's Flora Fixes - Revamped[www.nexusmods.com]
use WM's Flora Fixes - Revamped (No Scripts)
+
Then also install the SMIM patch WM's Flora Fixes - SMIM Patch

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point
Ultra Widescreen Users
Just an FYI if you are playing on a Ultra Widescreen:

I personally do not use an Ultra Widescreen (I play at 2560x1440) thus have never set one up. For a few hopefully useful tips see the "Widescreen & Ultra Widescreen Users" section of my SSE Pick & Choose Guide
Then proceed to the next section in this guide.
User Interface (UI)
Optional - QUI (Alpha)[www.nexusmods.com] Since AddItemMenu has not and likely will not update to 1.6.353 QUI is a great alternative. I've been using QUI's Nexus release which works great and was using the Github release for a few months before that. Also includes "Stay At The System Page".

26. A Quality World Map[www.nexusmods.com] Be sure to choose from one of the first two files in the list as they are Form 44 which you must use for SSE. So either choose version 8.4CA or version 8.4CM.

You can also add the Optional File:
25a. "A Quality World Map - Clear Map Skies" as an add-on.

27. SkyUI[www.nexusmods.com] SkyUI also gives us the needed MCM. Elegant, PC-friendly interface mod with many advanced features. WIDESCREEN USERS ALSO SEE THE WIDE SCREEN SECTION OF THIS GUIDE.

28. Remove QuickSave Button from SkyUI System Menu[www.nexusmods.com] This mod is so important as it Contains the much Needed "Flashing Game Save Fix" however it also removes the QuickSave button which otherwise if you use QuickSaves can cause problems with your game down the road. Choose the menu layout that best suits you

If you must have your QuickSave then make sure you add this mod[www.nexusmods.com] instead. DO NOT use this mod & the Remove QuickSave Button mod together and if using the WideScreen Fix you'll be able to get this fix on that mod page.

29. Immersive HUD - iHUD Special Edition[www.nexusmods.com] HUD when you need it. HIDE when you don't. Get the best of both worlds. The usefulness of having a HUD with the immersion of having none.
Remember to: Set/Activate your "Key press Toggles" in the MCM (see image) once in game.

30. Dialogue Movement Enabler [www.nexusmods.com] (Make sure you grab the version labeled "Anniversary Edition"). Keeps your character from being locked in place during dialogue with other NPC's which is particularly annoying when an NPC walks between you and whomever you're speaking with. Fear no more as this mod allows you to move around in Dialogue Menus.

31. More Informative Console[www.nexusmods.com] edits the UI to show a great deal of additional information on npcs, items, and other objects when the console is opened, similar to the way MFG console worked for Oldrim.

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point

Important Reminder ALWAYS BE AWARE OF WHICH VERSION YOU ARE DOWNLOADING ON EACH MOD PAGE What we are looking for is mods for game version 1.6.353 or mods that have "NG" in the mod name or version nomenclature or some confirmation the mod works for this (1.6.353) version of the game. If there are no notes, for example on texture mods there most likely will not be, then we are fine especially since I'll provide notes where I feel there may be some confusion.

32. MCM Helper[www.nexusmods.com] version 1.3.2 Simplifies the creation of Mod Configuration Menus and extends them with powerful new features, such as persistent INI settings and hotkey registration. Mod authors will be able to write simpler, cleaner Papyrus scripts for their configs. Players will be able to spend less time in menus. Plus we'll be needing this once "True Directional Movement" updates. Also ENB's with full weather support require it.

33. Better MessageBox Controls[www.nexusmods.com]
Fixes the clickable area of buttons so they are easier to click. Lets you navigate the message boxes with the keyboard. Use Left/Right controls, and Activate to select options (typically A,D and E but it should work if you remapped those controls to other keys).

34. Better Dialogue Controls[www.nexusmods.com] This mod will be most useful for people who like to use both the keyboard and mouse, it fixes issues where the mouse just flat out prevents some keyboard controls from working as expected.

35. UIExtensions[www.nexusmods.com] Adds various custom menus to Skyrim for modder use.

Optional - Do you play with a controller?
Ever get annoyed that you can't use your mouse with your gamepad plugged in? Now you can switch between them painlessly. I've been using this mod since it first came out and love it.
Auto Input Switch[www.nexusmods.com] Make sure you install the version for 1.6.xxx

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point
Utilities / Modders Resources
Mods that you'll need in order to use some of the mods in this guide.

36. Spell Perk Item Distributor (SPID)[www.nexusmods.com] Make sure version 1.6.353 is selected in FOMOD. SKSE plugin that can be used to add spells/perks/items/shouts/packages/outfits/keywords/factions to every NPC in the game, using config files.

37. PapyrusUtil SE - Modders Scripting Utility Functions[www.nexusmods.com] version 4.3 An SKSE plugin adding several new scripts with native functions that provide various conveniences related to data storage and other misc functions to the scripter/modder. Easy to use interface for modders to save&reload in-game variables (e.g. MCM settings) to/from file

38. ConsoleUtilSSE NG[www.nexusmods.com] version works for all SSE versions. This mod enables papyrus scripts to execute console commands. 2 mods in this guide require it.

39. FileAccess Interface for Skyrim SE Scripts - FISSES[www.nexusmods.com] Use version 1.4.0-beta Easy to use interface for modders to save&reload in-game variables (e.g. MCM settings) to/from file. Re-built source code for SKSE64 Preliminary AE build 2.1.5

40. powerofthree's Papyrus Extender[www.nexusmods.com] version 1.6.353 will be selected in FOMOD. SKSE64 plugin that extends Papyrus script functionality, with over 275 new Papyrus functions, and 29 events. We will be installing mods that rely on it later.

Grab version 4.2.2 from the Old Files section of this next mod:
41. JContainers SE[www.nexusmods.com] version 4.2.2 Extends Skyrim SE Papyrus scripts (or SKSE/C++ plugins) with JSON based serializable data structures like arrays and maps.

Stop and Test your game here
Effects
42. Enhanced Blood Textures[www.nexusmods.com] FOMOD installer Choose: "SPID Compatible" then everything else choose "Default" and last choice is "None". (this mod also includes the much needed brawl bug fix)

43. GORECAP[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: After Enhanced Blood Textures Bethesda did a lousy job on the neck after beheadings. This mod improves the neck gorecap texture.

44. ElSopa HD - Dirt Blast SE[www.nexusmods.com] Much needed retexture of the impact dust. Choose either 1K (which is just fine) or 2K max.

45. R.A.S.S. Rain Ash And Snow Shaders - Wet Frost Cold Dust[www.nexusmods.com] Player's and NPC's breath will react to cold . YOU SHOULD TURN OFF EVERYTHING IN THE MCM EXCEPT "COLD" which gives the cold breath effect to your character & all NPCs. This way we get the same effect as the mod Wet & Cold without the buggy mess that W&C can sometimes be. Keep this mod simple and I think you'll like it.
SET RASS UP LIKE THIS USING THE IN GAME MCM

(Otherwise see mod page especially if using an ENB)

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point
Combat & Magic
46. VioLens - A Killmove Mod SE[www.nexusmods.com] VioLens - A Killmove Mod gives you in-game control over both Ranged and Melee Killmoves with control over the cinematic camera.

47. Wildcat - Combat of Skyrim[www.nexusmods.com] Wildcat is a streamlined, yet full featured combat overhaul. It makes combat more dangerous and visceral by increasing lethality, adding injuries and context sensitive stagger and making combat AI more responsive and aggressive. It accomplishes this with minimal scripting and no save bloat.

48. Real Bows (by DecimusMaximus for SSE)[www.nexusmods.com] Replaces the vanilla bow models with more practical and realistic models.

49. Real Bows - Collision Fixes[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: After Real Bows The bows are a tad too long. This mod fixes that. Fixes the mismatching collision meshes in Real Bows SE that cause many of the bows to clip through the ground.

ADD these lines for archery
to your Skyrim.ini file, they work great. If you are not sure how to edit the file check the video tab on the ABT mod page, Gopher was kind enough to explain how to do it (the video was made for Skyrim, same settings for Skyrim SE). You need to add these lines to your Skyrim.ini file, which is located in /Documents/My Games/Skyrim Special Edition/
(backup Skyrim.ini before editing it!!!):

[Actor]
fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=12288.0000
[Combat]
fMagnetismStrafeHeadingMult=0.0
fMagnetismLookingMult=0.0
f1PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7
f3PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7
bForceNPCsUseAmmo=1 (optional if you want NPCs to use ammo 1=on 0=off)
Note: If you don't have an [Actor] and/or [Combat] section in your Skirim.ini file already, just add them (after [General] section for example).

Need help with the .ini? Go to the 10m 55s mark of this video by Gopher

50. 45KO Slim Quivers[www.nexusmods.com] More realism less clipping. Most arrow quivers are now replaced with a slimmer version of the arrow quiver.

Magic - Optional
I'm going to make the Magic section *Optional for now solely based on me not wanting to renumber the entire guide right now.

Odin - Skyrim Magic Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com] Odin is what magic in Skyrim should have been. It improves and fixes vanilla Skyrim spells, makes scrolls and staves viable, and adds new spells, scrolls and staves inspired by previous Elder Scrolls magic. The new content is balanced and seamlessly integrated into the game.

Odin Cleaned Textures[www.nexusmods.com] Cleaned textures of Odin to remove any bad artifacts and increase FPS by saving in B7 Format

Odin - Summons Redone[www.nexusmods.com] provides alternate visuals for several of the new summonable creatures from Odin - Skyrim Magic Overhaul by EnaiSiaion, replacing Odin's clannfear and daedroth with models and textures from 4thUnknown's Clannfears SSE and Daedroths SSE. As these models use different skeletons, it was also necessary to update their attack data.

Odin - Misc Audio Tweaks[www.nexusmods.com] Some of the conjuration sounds are a bit too loud or repetitive, this mod fixes that.

Game Play - Immersion - QoL
Let's add some quality of life mods.

51. Run For Your Lives[www.nexusmods.com] Let's protect shop owners so we can barter with them throughout our game and some other NPCs as well. A small mod that makes citizens in a village or city run indoors during a dragon attack.

52. Rich Skyrim Merchants[www.nexusmods.com] FOMOD Installer I would NOT take more than 5x gold (you can pick 2x, 5x, or 10x) otherwise you risk receiving NO gold when you sell to a merchant that has over $32,767 gold which can happen later in the game. 5x more is plenty, heck so is 2x.

Optional
Be a Milk Drinker - SPECIAL EDITION[www.nexusmods.com] For the clean and sober Dovahkiin!
+
Be A Milk Drinker with USSEP[www.nexusmods.com] Adds Compatibility between Be A Milk Drinker and the USSEP.

53. Sweeping Organizes Stuff - Use Broom to Clean Mess[www.nexusmods.com] Tired of items being scattered in disarray due to characters bumping into things or maybe an ill timed Fus Ro dah? This little Utility will allow you to use a broom to clean up physics mess.

54. Cutting Room Floor 3.1.12[www.afkmods.com] If ever you had the feeling that Skyrim was missing something, you were probably right! Villages that were supposed to exist have been brought back. Quests that were partially implemented have been completed. Various items have been restored that were still in the data files. NPCs have been brought back to the game and given homes where appropriate. Plus plenty more.

55. Point The Way[www.nexusmods.com] THIS IS ALSO A FIX. Road signs placed at major intersections that were either lacking signs, or were missing information indicating the full extent of where you could travel on a road. Some smaller towns & villages aren't even mentioned - despite Bethesda having created signs for them! Some were pointed the wrong way or had the wrong city being labeled have also been fixed.

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point

56. AI Overhaul SSE[www.nexusmods.com] (version 1.7 is for 1.6.353) Can't say enough about this mod which changes many of the Vanilla NPCs AI to act more realistic and immersive.

57. AI Overhaul SSE - Official Patch Hub[www.nexusmods.com]
Grab the AI Overhaul - Cutting Room Floor Patch 1.0.2

58. Multiple Floors Sandboxing[www.nexusmods.com] This little tweak will encourage NPCs to climb stairs around them and explore their surroundings more.

59. Left Hand Rings Modified SE[www.nexusmods.com] FOMOD installer choose SMIM and leave everything else default. Vanilla game does not allow rings on the left hand (crazy right?). Adds rings that are worn on the left hand. These rings can be crafted, enchanted, bought from merchants, and found randomly as treasure.

PrivateProfileRedirector SE - Faster game start (INI file cacher)[www.nexusmods.com] if you are this far into the guide you might want this mod - The amount of seconds that this mod will reduce your start time by depends on the amount of enabled plugins you have, as well as other things using INI files such as ENB. It will be basically imperceptible when used on the vanilla game and will go up from there, shaving off 6 seconds for 50 or so plugins, up to 20+ seconds for 250+ plugins.

60. Paarthurnax - Quest Expansion[www.nexusmods.com] A fully voiced, quite expanded new take on the quest Paarthurnax, giving both the Blades and Paarthurnax good reasons for their stances, and you, Dragonborn, the final choice.

61. Guard Dialogue Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com] More Dialogue, More Realism, More Respect. This Mod alters the Guard Dialogue, changing it from something that breaks your immersion in the world of Skyrim to something that actually increases it. All in the original voices and Fully compliant with Skyrim Lore.

62. Guard Dialogue Overhaul MCM[www.nexusmods.com] MCM add-on for Guard Dialogue Overhaul (ESP-FE).

63. Gildergreen Regrown[www.nexusmods.com] With this mod the Gildergreen sapling in Whiterun will fully grow displaying all it's beauty regardless of which path you take during the quest The Blessing Of Nature.

As many of you know AddItemMenu has not been updated to 1.6 so here's a mod that's similar to it but has not search function and if you attain items indoors they'll be marked as stolen so try to add items while outdoors. Once installed in order to use it simply use the F11 key. QUI 2.2[github.com]

Nether's Follower Framework
Optional - I'm putting this here for those that want a follower system that
allows more than one active follower in your party at a time (up to 10) and allows for your followers to ride horses, +more

Install with Mod Manager:
Nether's Follower Framework[www.nexusmods.com] Nether's Follower Framework (NFF) is a multi-follower system that is light on game resources and allows for up to 10 companions at one time. It provides a wealth of additional features, including immersion and quality-of-life functions to allow you to adventure with a small team of characters and includes a follower horse riding mechanic. Requires: ConsoleUtil, PapyrusUtil (Both installed earlier in this guide) and suggests the mod "Fuz Ro D-oh - Silent Voice" (also installed earlier in the guide).
FOMOD: Only select the following
  • Skyrim Special Edition
  • Followers Avoid Traps
  • Relation Dialogue Overhaul RDO
  • RDO Comments
  • Friendly Fire
  • Skill Boosts
  • Spell Magnitude Mod
  • ESP for Skyrim Special Edition
+
Since we chose No Team Magic Damage Core (Beta) we also need:
NFF No Team Magic Damage Patches for Vanilla Plus Magic And Shout Overhauls[www.nexusmods.com]
Install Only: "NFF No Team Magic Damage - Odin Patch" version 1.0Odin

Note: There is a setting in the NFF MCM that if toggled on will "Allow Followers (and other NPCs) to Sandbox multi-level interiors." This setting replaces the need for the mod "Multiple Floors Sandboxing" so be sure to set it to on.

Important: Don't put Custom Followers like Inigo, Recorder etc. under the control of EFF or NFF as they have their own follower system. Same with the Dark Brotherhood as Cicero & the Initiates don't technically use the vanilla system at all, they have their own method of "Follow" "Wait" and "Dismiss". Same with Serana until her quest is complete. So EFF or NFF (AFT) are fine for everyone else. Example: Lydia is fine or most followers you install other than similar to mentioned here. When in doubt see the mod page. EFF and NFF also allow more than one follower in your party at a time.

All that said, and IF you have the Anniversary DLC installed. there are some great horses in there. For example the "Dwarven Horse" comes with the "Forgotten Seasons" creation. The Dwarven Horse can sprint forever, literally! And it's also invincible, literally. And you can't lose the Dwarven Horse as he always stays where you leave him.

Also, the Unicorn comes with the "Wild Horses" creation. Unicorn is immortal and can sprint/gallop something like 10 times longer than a regular horse. Once tamed, the Unicorn becomes an owned mount. If you switch to a different mount, it will slowly make its way to the College of Winterhold courtyard.

But I don't have the Anniversary DLC
Let's not forget about Arvak (obtained durning the Dawnguard questline) who can be summoned where and when you need him including if he gets killed, and there's Shadowmere (obtaind durn the Dark Brotherhood questline) who has 1,637 HP and 198 Stamina.

Do NOT remove mods mid-game
Player Homes

Pinegrove Lodge has room for 2 kids and 2 followers.
Models & Textures 1
Note:
As you go forward remember this when you are deciding on 1K-2K-4K or even 8K textures. Indoors has very little if any bearing on the hit your system takes so keep that in mind if you're worried about performance issues (VRAM). I'm choose 2K for both inside & outside this time around. If you must, 4k is usually best used on things that are large enough to see the fine details on, like mountains, dragons, city gates, etc. 4K for Weapons & Armors as well, but I would only use it (if at all) on items that are going to be often in your view (this time I took 2K for armor & weapons as well). Shutt3r, mod author of the very popular Noble Skyrim Mod HD-2K wrote a short article[forums.nexusmods.com] on texture choices. Check it out for more info on this subject.

65. Stockades of Skyrim 3D[www.nexusmods.com] First let's fix the meshes. Replaces low polygon and 2D assets from the stockade set used by Orcs and bandits (Which were missed by SMIM).

4K Stockade[www.nexusmods.com] we need 2 from here to fix the textures so they match the rest of the game. Go down to "Optional Files":

+
67. 2K Stockade v1.0 Now for the Rules: AFTER for anything Vortex shows

96. ElSopa HD - Grindstone SE[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: AFTER Noble Skyrim

97. WiZkiD Carriages[www.nexusmods.com] Rules: After Material Fix, SMIM For 2K you only need the Optional file. Not only is this a replacer for all carriages with high quality textures but it also contains the Prisoner Cart Fix. My game has no problem with that scene but this is my favorite carriage retexture. Win win for everyone.

98. RUSTIC WINDOWS[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: Must be After Noble Skyrim. This mod retextures the Skyrim and Dragonborn DLC windows in a lore-friendly way. The window glass has been revised to be thick, textured and insulating. The "opaque" nature of the glass has a purpose. 2K and 1K versions.

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point

99. Book Covers Skyrim[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: After Noble Skyrim. Book Covers Skyrim is a retexture of all the readable books, journals, and notes in Skyrim. It gives each book and journal its own unique cover and adds many additional paper styles to the notes.
+
Be sure to use the version based on ENB or No ENB (depending on if you'll be using one or not) for this next mod. I have set the guide up for with or without ENB but I do give you an ENB that looks brilliant with this mod list in this guide's next section.

Optional Unread Books Glow SSE [www.nexusmods.com] Books which you have not read yet will have a visible glow hence making them easier to spot. When you read a book for the first time, its glow will disappear. All copies of the same title are considered the same book, so once you've read one specific title you've them all. Different glow strength choices configured in-game via spell. * Tracks books from any mod or DLC

100. Skyrim SE Improved Puddles[www.nexusmods.com] The first 2 files on the mod page are for ENB users. The second 2 are for non-ENB users. The main issue I'm looking to fix here are the horrendous Windhelm puddles so you can either take the version that is for all of Skyrim's puddles or just Windhelm. Most importantly make sure you take the correct file for either ENB or non-ENB.

101. RUSTIC ANIMATED POTIONS and POISONS[www.nexusmods.com] adds subtle, colorful animations to potions.

*Optional
Hearthfire BYOH Mesh Fixes[www.nexusmods.com] For those that might be bothered by the slighly drooping wall on the Hearthfire Homes we build in game. This mod Corrects that.

102. Glorious Doors of Skyrim (GDOS) SE[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: After SMIM and Noble Skyrim 22 unique new door meshes, replacing 42 door meshes ingame used in hundreds of instances!
+ in the Update Files grab
Glorious Doors of Skyrim SE - Update 1.04 Rule: After Glorious Doors of Skyrim

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point

103. High Quality Food and Ingredients SE[www.nexusmods.com] RULES: AFTER All = Static Mesh Improvement Mod, Rustic Cooking, Rustic Clutter.

104. Realistic HD Food Remastered[www.nexusmods.com] RULES: After both Static Mesh Mods.

105. Alternate Red Wine Textures for Realistic HD Food Remastered[www.nexusmods.com] RULE After Realistic Food HD Remastered. Retextures the Wine & Alto Wine from Realistic HD Food Remastered from green to red.

106. GIANT[www.nexusmods.com] Giant body and Giant outfit lore-friendly textures overhaul.

107. SavrenX Gore[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: After SMIM. This mod enhances gore!
Lighting & Weather
108. Enhanced Lights and FX[www.nexusmods.com] Take base mod and in the the FOMOD pick 'Enhancer' (which makes interiors darker - so if you don't want darker interiors then skip the enhancer option although down below you'll find a brightness control mod) & DO NOT take any Exterior options as we will be using a weather mod for that. Check BOTH SMIM Boxes. and I chose NO SMOKE but Do NOT choose Torches. IMPORTANT Leave all of the Player Homes selections blank.
Rule: After Everything that conflicts EXCEPT choose BEFORE Whiterun Wall Fix

*Now go to the plugins section of Vortex
109. enable "landscape and water fixes - patch - elfx.esp" which we had disabled earlier

I forgot to number this one but take it:
Unofficial Enhanced Lights and FX ELFX SMIM fps patch for SE[www.nexusmods.com] Improves performance when ELFX and SMIM are together.

110. ELFX Fixes[www.nexusmods.com] Rule AFTER ELFX. FOMOD CHOOSE: Vanilla & ENB ELFX Meshes. This mod corrects a few minor (maybe even annoying) lighting issues from ELFX.

111. Obsidian Weathers & Seasons [www.nexusmods.com] Sharp, ominous, and atmospheric weathers that accentuate proximal detail while obscuring distant landscapes with mysterious fogs. Obsidian Weathers and Seasons is a collaborative work by the authors of Dolomite and Rustic Weathers; a hybridization of artistic styles that glorifies Skyrim for her beauty while preserving her dated modesty.
+
This next mod adds a MCM to the above mod.
112. Alternate Obsidian Weathers MCM[www.nexusmods.com] RULE: After Obsidian Weathers - Use the version Alternate Obsidian Weathers MCM - PapyrusUtil as it has been updated most recently.
In-game MCM - changes take effect after sleeping

expand view if needed

DO NOT use the Vortex Mods Nexus Update feature on this next mod - it's not a Nexus mod.
113. Embers HD- WiZkiD Enhanced Edition XD - Inferno (ELFX Edition)[drive.google.com] This is my Google Drive file that has been scanned. Click "Download" then "Download Anyway".
Then Drag the the file to the bottom of Vortex to the download box & in the install.
for RULES: place this after SMIM and anything else it asks. Outstanding work as usual by WiZkiD.

Now let's eliminate some flickering in the distance and reduce heavy particles.
Go to your SkyrimPrefs.ini (C:\Users\Owner\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition)
(you also can do this thru Bethini if you're using it) and set this :
[Particles]
iMaxDesired=1500

Now go back to the ElSopa - Medieval Anvil mod page and grab another patch
114. ElSopa - Medieval Anvil Embers XD Patch[www.nexusmods.com] in the optional files section
Rule: After ALL

Only use this next fix IF NEEDED
When you Launch the game and look at the fire & IF your fire has flickering use this fix:
EmbersXD Fire Animation Fix[www.nexusmods.com] BUT you should not need this.

*Optional lighting control
Only use if you'll NOT be using an ENB
Interior Vs Exterior Brightness Settings SSE[www.nexusmods.com] For those who don't use enb This mod adds separate sliders for Interior and Exterior brightness via SkyUi's MCM. This works great for adjusting lighting with sliders for indoors and outdoors with separate sliders for Dungeons and Dwellings.
In-game MCM lighting controls

expand view if needed

Speaking of ENB
I set this guide up with enb as optional so all can make up their mind. IF you are a hardcore enb user then you probably have one in mind. (just remember there is a loss of about 5-20fps with an ENB installed) I have chosen the ENB I feel looks best with this mod list.

That said this next ENB has support for Obsidian and if you want an ENB this is my choice:

IF YOU DECIDE TO INSTALL ENB
SEE THE "ENB INSTRUCTIONS" SECTION FURTHER DOWN IN THIS GUIDE
I also listed the the requirementS as well as a Video Walkthrough.

For requirements See the ENB Instructions section of this guide
see the ENB instructions section of this guide
Since I have no way of knowing who wants ENB in their game I setup a separate section
Re-Engaged ENB[www.nexusmods.com]
The very first thing you should do after installing Re Enaged is open enbseries.ini which is located here \steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition and find the line EnableTerrainParallax and set it to false before you launch your game for the first time otherwise it will remain in the enbcache folder.
Again, see the ENB instructions section of this guide if you want to use an ENB. Use the version for Obsidian Weather as Re Engaged will make use of the weather control. The requirements and instructions are listed further down in the guide. IF you do decide on an ENB then Do Not install the mod "Interior Vs Exterior Brightness Settings SSE" that's listed above as in that case "Interior Vs Exterior Brightness Settings SSE" will not function.

All requirements for Re Engaged ENB are in the ENB Instructions section of this guide

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point

Do NOT remove mods mid-game (although ENB's can safely be removed or swapped out)
Landscape
Note: I did not set this page up for xLODGen or DyndoLOD so if you are versed in LOD generation then go ahead and use the type mods you would normally use.. This section is setup for those than DO NOT want to run DyndoLOD.

115. Nordic Snow (aka HQ Snow Texture)[www.nexusmods.com] These textures are 2048x2048 which is also the same as the original snow textures in SSE. Hence, these textures won't cause you any harm as long as you can pull of the original.

116. Real Mountains[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: After Noble Skyrim. Retexture that enhance the detail of mountains and rocks. A more realistic look. FOMOD Installer: I went with Eroded and 2K

You can use this next mod (FOD) or the mod below it (HLT) or both
117. Forests of Dibella HD 2K-4K Manual download then install with mod manager. The best tree mod out there. (Comes with the LODS in case you want to generate with DyndoLOD)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogrqpiq1emc AND/OR
No longer a need to Clean in xEdit - last update took care of that
Happy Little Trees[www.nexusmods.com] FOMOD: I took = *"All Trees", and for Add-on took "Tree size" and for Alternate snow textures took "Default" (best with Majestic Mountains). A nice little tree mod with skinned trees and a low performance cost. *This mod has aspen trees when selecting the "All Trees" option in the FOMOD. you don't want to use any tree billboards if you'll be using DynDOLOD3
Rule: AFTER Tree Bark in High Definition

Optional HLT Tree Scaling
Happy Little Trees is shipped with a Treescale.esm. This plugin makes most green and dead pines 20 percent larger. But you can also set your personal tree size. Check the guide from the article section. How to scale Pines[www.nexusmods.com] check the comment by Wofrion on how tree scale works.

I scaled at 1.1 (which is 10% larger) the first time, then checked in game. Then I run it again but at 1.6 and checked in game again and then left it alone.

Happy Little Tress Rule in the plugin section of Vortex
From Vortex while in the Plugins section go to "Manage Rules" and set it as follows:
unofficial skyrim special edition patch.esp MUST LOAD AFTER treescale.esm
Select "Add" / then "Close" / then up top select "Sort now" / now go to the Mods section of Vortex and up top select "Deploy Mods" and OK the changes.

Optional: You can also install 1, 2, or all 3 of the following:
Bent Pines[www.nexusmods.com] add the optional file Navmesh .esp by CakeofHonor
Immersive Fallen Trees[www.nexusmods.com] and Immersive Fallen Trees Patch[www.nexusmods.com]
Enhanced Landscapes - Oaks Standalone SSE - Marsh Pines - Dilon Vul[www.nexusmods.com] marsh overhaul called Dilon Vul. It's like a more sparse marsh tree mod, with dead trees and vistas

118. Paradise City for Vanilla Skyrim -- Great Trees for Cities SE [www.nexusmods.com] Are Skyrim cities too barren for you? Want a dash more of shade under the sun? Well, this is for you. This mod turns many of the province's cities -- and the village of Rorikstead -- into leafy paradises. OR in the FOMOD installer you can choose No Windhelm to leave Windhelm bare-bones cold. OR go totally modular. We love choices.
Note for Paradise City for Vanilla Skyrim users that will be using DyndoLOD 3 When generating LOD with DYNDOLOD, do not use this mod's billboard pack. Also, DYNDOLOD 3.0a means you only run TEXGEN (which comes with it) to generate the needed billboards with better color fidelity.

119. Kyne's Grass[www.nexusmods.com] Several of the best grass mods combined throughout Skyrim. FOMOD INSTALLER I chose "medium for the ini and did not check any boxes and it looks great.

Note:You CAN change the density of your grass. Bethini does a great job if you are intimidated by editing it yourself in your .ini file. Your Skyrim.ini is found here: C:\Users\Owner\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition open Skyrim.ini with notepad, look for [Grass] and under that find iMinGrassSize=X the "X" is where the number is set, yours may be 40 which is default. The smaller the number the denser the grass cover. I like to set mine to 60 so it's not too dense. Don't go over 100 or under 20. Anything over 70 is considered Low. Under 30 is HIGH density. (You CAN'T change the length of your grass)

*Then add this
120. Landscape Fixes For Grass Mods[www.nexusmods.com] Change landscape to reduce grass clipping through objects and restore lost details. Improve performance by removing grass where it cannot normally be seen. Reduces overgrown sections of some roads.

While you're there
121. *Grab Patches for Arthmoor's Town add-ons which includes
122. ALT Start and Cutting Room Floor in the FOMOD.
123. Then Grab this next patch z Vanilla Military Camps

***Now go to the plugins section of Vortex and enable the:***
"landscape and water fixes - patch - lffgm.esp"
which we had disabled earlier in the guide.

124. Better Dirt Cliffs and Alphas[www.nexusmods.com] Rules: After Everything. Overhaul of the meshes & alpha channels involved in blending the top of the dirt cliff with the roots, and the roots with the wall. Covers SMIM meshes too.

125. Mari's flora[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: After ELFX & SMIM and BEFORE WM's Flora Fixes Revamped. I took the Medium file for this HD plants pack with approx. 100 textures. Stunning work by Mari. Choose your preffered colors. Make sure you grab the patch down below.

Mora Tapinella 4k[www.nexusmods.com] Replaced this with "High Quality Food & Ingredients"

Make Sure to add this next mod
126. Flowers and plants mesh fix SE[www.nexusmods.com] This will fix the bug where some flowers and plants were always too bright under shadows. Take the first 2 files on this mod page which are Flowers and plants mesh fix SE and Flowers and plants mesh fix SE - Dragons tongue by Mari And for the Rules make sure use AFTER anything Mari's but BEFORE "WM's Flora Fixes Revamped" Loot is giving Vortex the wrong information. We always want our patches to come AFTER the mods they are patching.

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point

Snow & Ice
Let's start by improving our icicles throughout the game.

127. Transparent and Refracting Icicle and Frost Atronach[www.nexusmods.com] FOMOD Installer: Choose #1. Outdoor Icicle refraction. For #2 we already installed Rustic Soul Gems but if you want fully charged Soul Gems to refract light choose this as well. For #3 we already install Rustric Daedra but if you want the Frost Atronoach's somewhat transparent you can choose your strength here then let this mod overwrite Rustic Daedra since it will only effect the Frost Atronoachs. For #4 Misc. this is up to you.

128. Simplicity of Snow[www.nexusmods.com] A light-weight snow mod designed to minimize conflicts. Uses your own snow texture and removes snow from under roofs.
+ Important
Set bEnableProjecteUVDiffuseNormals" in your SkyrimPrefs.ini to 1 Go to your SkyrimPrefs.ini and set this which is located here: C:\Users\Owner\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition and under [Display] set as follows (or if using Bethini you can change it in there under Custom): bEnableProjecteUVDiffuseNormals=1 (if it's 0 change it to 1) Note: if at anytime your snow is not matching up in game check to see if your .ini files may have reverted back to 0 by simply checking the above step (doubtful but this can happen).

129. Footprints[www.nexusmods.com] Adds footprints to the player, NPCs, and creatures. With particle FX! Currently for snow and ash. Custom footprints hook for third-party mods w/ custom races.
Note:
*IF you'll be using an ENB grab the optional file "Footprints - ENB" either now or after you install your ENB - should not matter but I did add a reminder in the ENB section just in case.

129a. Footprints Bright Snow fix[www.nexusmods.com] Install Footprints Bright Snow fix - Disabled particles

130. SPID for Footprints[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: After Footprints Uses SPID to distribute the footprints spells from the footprints mod, instead of the cloak spell of the original mod. WE ADDED THE REQUIREMENT "Spell Perk Item Distributor (SPID)" EARLIER IN THIS GUIDE.

Now add this important fix:
131a. SPID for Footprints fix[www.nexusmods.com] Rule: After Footprints and SPID for Footprints. this fix corrects incorrect variable references and incorrect assignments to variables that no longer existed.
Nemesis Animations
This section is optional

What is Nemesis?
To put it simply Nemesis is a utility that allows other mods to insert animations into the game.

If you are not familiar with animations or feel you don't want or need them you can skip this section.

For more information on what Nemesis is see the "Animations - Nemesis and DAR" section of my SSE Help Guide

Let's install Nemesis and a couple of Animation mods

Requirement (this is not a mod) If you haven't already done so go ahead and install
NET 6.0[dotnet.microsoft.com] We need both the x64 version and the x86 version.

131. Nemesis[www.nexusmods.com] Your all in 1 skyrim behavior framework. Automated behavior modification extraction, behavior patching and more. Note: When it comes to PCEA do not use the FNIS version as Nemesis has its own version of PCEA:
Watch this video for installing Nemesis
https://youtu.be/W9hrvc8ync4
VORTEX USERS MAKE SURE YOU HIT THE "DEPLOY MODS" BUTTON WHILE IN THE MODS SECTION OF VORTEX AFTER INSTALLING NEMESIS FOR THE FIRST TIME AND AFTER EACH ANIMATION INSTALL

Note:
ALWAYS RUN NEMESIS AFTER INSTALLING A MOD THAT DEPENDS ON IT AS FOLLOWS
Step 1. Open Nemesis
Step 2. Update Engine
Step 3. Find the name of the mod you just installed in the list and tick the box next to it
Step 4. Launch Nemesis Behavior Engine
Step 5. Deploy Mods from the top of Vortex

This next step will allow you to add Retimed hit frames to your game
Did you ever get the feeling that enemy attacks were hitting you sooner than the animation would suggest? That's because they do.

The good news is for Retimed hit frames you do NOT need to Install the mod[www.nexusmods.com] but you should give that mod author an endorsement.
*Here's all you need to do: No need to actually install this next mod.
131a. Tick the box for Retimed Hit Frames in Nemesis (you do NOT need the actual mod for this one) and then run Nemesis (see above note regarding running Nemesis).

Next a mod that gives exclusive animations to your character

Player Character Exclusive Animations (PCEA)
132. Project New Reign - Nemesis PCEA[www.nexusmods.com] A complete revamped version of all other PCEA made from scratch. Nemesis PCEA's new design eliminates many bugs haunting other PCEA as well as greatly improves the performance. The day of Alternate Animation mods messing with your PCEA is over. 10 slots is not enough? Fear not, Nemesis PCEA supports up to 20 slots. (And yes, using this PCEA will give you animations in conjunction with SL Framework for LL mods)
RUN NEMESIS AFTER INSTALLING

133. True Directional Movement - Modernized Third Person Gameplay[www.nexusmods.com] TDM Overhauls the third person gameplay similarly to modern action RPGs, entirely through SKSE. Move and attack in any direction. Modular and customizable through MCM. You'll need to install the enemy/boss bars as a separate mod. I'll add that down below as optional.

TDM includes Headtracking and Nemesis will add a TDM Headtracking Patch
*Make sure you ticked TDM in the Nemesis behavior tool then run Nemesis
ALWAYS RUN NEMESIS AFTER EACH INSTALL/UNINSTALL OF ANIMATION MODS
AND AFTER EACH ANIMATION INSTALL

Optional Add-on for True Directional Movement
TrueHUD - HUD Additions[www.nexusmods.com] HUD additions formerly included in True Directional Movement, completely reworked and improved! Very customizable actor info bars, boss bars, player widget and an API for other plugins to use. Modular and customizable through MCM.

134. Ice skating fixed for real - No more attack sliding movement[www.nexusmods.com] Fixes the infamous long-standing vanilla issue where attacking while slowly moving will make you slide across the ground giving the impression of an ice-skater.1H and 2H covered, NPC and Player.
Tick the Ice Skating box inside Nemesis - RUN NEMESIS AFTER INSTALLING

Note: in case you are wondering. Ice Skating Fixes is NOT compatible with FNIS.
The problem here is FNIS for modders is a tool to generate a behavior file from animations.
Ice Skating Fixed doesn't contain any animations, it edits a vanilla behavior file.
The only tool that solves compatibility between conflicting edited behaviors is Nemesis or the ancient mods Fore (the author of FNIS) himself provided the patches for (which in this case Fore did not).

Nemesis & FNIS Together?
which would be more of an advanced setup (you would know if you also wanted this)
For those that want both Nemesis and FNIS in the same load order see the following link:
Use FNIS and NEMESIS Together[www.nexusmods.com] I have not tried this method.

(Will also install an optional plugin which is used for things like Makeup and Tattoos)
(IF you'll be using high heels you'll need RaceMenu High Heels[www.nexusmods.com] )

We just finished installing Nemesis which installed a dummy plugin for FNIS so we do not need FNIS for this next mod (XPMSSE).

136. XP32 Maximum Skeleton Special Extended - XPMSSE[www.nexusmods.com] On install choose: Physics Extensions, - Racemenu, - Out of Sync. LEAVE EVERYTHING ELSE AT DEFAULT SETTINGS (leave it alone).

137. XPMSSE - Nemesis - Papyrus Stack Fix[www.nexusmods.com] Vortex Rule: AFTER XPMSSE. Fixes XPMSSE script where it can't find the correct animation groups causing Papyrus Stack errors, when using ONLY Nemesis, without FNIS.

141. Vanilla hair - Salt and Wind[www.nexusmods.com] This will cover all the Vaniila hair styles for both your character and the NPC's. Softer Salt & Wind textures for vanilla hairs - no .esp, textures only

Note: Normal Map options v1.4 - not needed if you use a skin replacer. OR (ATT: Pick one body type ONLY) UNP Female Body Renewal - A female face and body replacer[www.nexusmods.com] (Includes skin but we will be overwriting the skin) Choose option but NO BROWS Pinup or Skinny | Static or TBBP (HDT can be quirky) | Nude or Underwear type | 2K or 4K (I choose 4K) | Scars? These are strictly visual changes to improve the look of horses in the game

146. Light Horses of Skyrim (Realistic body and fur)[www.nexusmods.com] Choose the 2nd file FOMOD_fixed glowing and too bright textures then in the FOMOD installer you choose fur colors for each hold - then select esl-Flagged esp. Rule After HD Reworked Horses

Lore Friendly NPCs

Let's Set-up Northbourne NPC's
This section is not difficult but you must follow it exactly. Your NPC's will look outstanding afterwards but will still look good without adding these mods so if you feel you're not up for it you can skip the entire section. Again it's not difficult but you must follow it exactly.

Northbourne Mod Requirements
We already have a Hair mod, Tempered Skins for both male and female along with Beards, Brows, The Eyes of Beauty, and Mild Complexions all of which we installed back in the Character section.

So here's what we'll also need:

151. Expressive Facial Animation Female Edition[www.nexusmods.com] To avoid clipping with female mouth.

152. Expressive Facial Animation Male Edition[www.nexusmods.com] To avoid clipping with male mouth.

We installed "Mild Complexions" earlier

READ
As you install the Northbourne series, after you install the first hold's npc's, Vortex will list conflicts because the Mod Author (MA) of course uses many of the same assets for all NPC's. This is normal. Just let each install overwrite the last. Also make sure Hair mods are Before Northbourne. I know Loot/Vortex sometimes does not agree but I've been doing it this way for years with no issues. Matter of fact if you don't do it as per my suggestions you will have issues like dark face etc.

153. Northbourne NPCs of Whiterun Hold[www.nexusmods.com] Rules: After ALL. Redesign for all 102 named male and female NPCs in Whiterun Hold (includes Riverwood NPC's)
154. Northbourne NPCs of Falkreath Hold [www.nexusmods.com] Rules: After ALL. Redesign for all 60 named male and female NPCs in Falkreath Hold
155. Northbourne NPCs of the Rift[www.nexusmods.com] Rules: After ALL. Redesign for all 125 named male and female NPCs in the Rift Region
156. Northbourne NPCs of Winterhold[www.nexusmods.com] Rules: After ALL. Redesign for all 34 named male and female NPCs in the Winterhold Region
157. Northbourne NPCs of Haafingar [www.nexusmods.com] Rules: After ALL. Redesign for all 104 named male and female NPCs in Haafingar Hold.
158. Northbourne NPCs of Hjaalmarch[www.nexusmods.com] Rules: After ALL. Redesign for all 27 named male and female NPCs in Hjaalmarch Hold (except children and beast races).

Serana is not included in any of the above and the mod author made a stand alone version which we will add in a moment. First some neded patches.

Northbourne Patches
159. We are now using the Synthesis patcher for AI Overhaul and Northbourne NPCs. See the next section of this guide for download, setup, and details.

Now we need a patch for Cutting Room Floor (CRF) and Northbourne - (if you installed CRF)
160. Patches for Northbourne NPCs[www.nexusmods.com] Grab "NB NPCs - CRF Patch AIO" patch.

161. Serana
Here's two choices and each mod page has several more choices for Serana - only Pick One
Choice 1. Serana - Daughter of Coldharbour[www.nexusmods.com] Rules: make sure this mod is AFTER everything your mod manager lists Made bythe same author as the above NPC overhauls.
OR
Choice 2. Seranaholic by rxkx22 - SSE[www.nexusmods.com] Rules: make sure this mod is AFTER everything your mod manager lists Replaces the look of Serana and\or her mother Valerica.

Optional Serana Hood "fix"
Serana's Invisible Hood - no scripts and no NPC change[www.nexusmods.com] IF you like use this mod to Make the Hood of Serana invisible. She will still wear it, but you won't see it. In contrast to other mods - like Serana's Hood Fix and Serana Hood Removal - this mod does not modify any scripts or modify Serana herself. It only touches the "Serana Hood" item.

Optional Courier choices:
The courier's look needs help imo. 2 choices are listed down below. only Pick One
Choice 1 (male). The Handsome Courier SE[www.nexusmods.com]
OR
Choice 2(female) Lilly - A fully-voiced female courier replacer[www.nexusmods.com] use the bsa version.

Optional - Marry Serana
Manual download then install with mod manager
Marry Me Serana[www.nexusmods.com] You can marry Serana after completing the quest "Kindred Judgment". This is a simple mod. The mod just adds Serana to the vanilla marriage options. It's the same way that you marry any other marriable NPC.

162. Serana Dialogue Edit - Skyrim Special Edition[www.nexusmods.com] An Overhaul of the Dialogue for Serana. This includes: Bug fixes, Custom Dialogue Branches, More Radiant Dialogue and Expansion into Hearthfire and Dragonborn.

start up the game & make sure everything loads & runs ok at this point

Pro tip In the unlikely (I highly doubt it will happen but just in case) event should you run into a naked npc in your travels simply open the console (with the tilde key), make very sure you click exactly on the npc (their name and information will appear), type "resetinventory" (without the quotes), hit enter, close the console (tilde key). Done.
Synthesis: Northbourne - AI Overhaul Patcher
Installation

1. Requirement (this is not a mod) If you haven't already done so go ahead and install

3. Install Synthesis patcher

4. reboot your PC

164. Realistic Water Two SE - Darker Gradient Textures - Rule: After RW2.

165. No longer needed

166. No longer needed

Now go back to the ElSopa - HD Medieval Anvil SE mod page and grab
167. ElSopa - Medieval Anvil Embers HD-RealisticWater Patch[www.nexusmods.com] in the optional files section. Rule: After RW2
*Now you can disable the "Elsopa - Medieval Anvil Embers XD Patch" if you used that earlier.

168. Animated Forge Water[www.nexusmods.com] Take the first file.
Then in the FOMOD installer.
Simply take one patch (the bottom of the FOMOD) "Slower Elsopa and Embers XD"
THEN - you can disable the patch for RW2 that your mod manager shows as redundant. I set it up this way for those that don't use all the mods in this guide. Better safe than sorry.;-)

Make sure you run the Creation Club Patcher in the next section

Do NOT remove mods mid-game
Armor for Full Upgrade
OPTIONAL for those that purchased the full SE (AE) upgrade:
This armor can be crafted with the completion of the quest "Crypt of the Heart"
Anyone who purchased the full upgrade can use this next mod - male or female.

Light Spell Knight Armor[www.nexusmods.com] this mod adds a light armor in the style of Spell Knight (specifically steel) from Creation Club. You of course need the Creation Club assets in order to use this mod. Requires the steel smithing perk.
ENB instructions
INSTALLATION & SETUP FOR ENB

a video I made for installing ENB (please note the version numbers for the mods are now different but the instructions are the same. Simply use the versions I indicate down below)
https://youtu.be/1tfbuaNZmvE AFTER THE VIDEO WE WILL INSTALL WATERCOLOR FIX AND THE SKY MESH
We've already installed the required SKSE & Obsidian Weathers earlier in the guide.

The first time you launch your game with an enb installed the load time will be a bit longer
This is normal due to caching - subsequent loads will be much quicker.

Make sure you download the SSE version then drag and drop it to the bottom of the Mods section of Vortex (where it says "drop files" to install this next file.
Particle Patch[www.nexusmods.com] Rule Before EVERYTHING Vortex asks.

Changed to v0.347 (1/16/2022)
This guide does not use parallax and the last several versions of the binary are parallax
so we use v0.347
(otherwise you'll get some strange ground textures in certain terrain)
1. *ENB Binary [enbdev.com] Manual download. This link will take you to version 347 as this is the version we want. 1. download 2. unzip file 3. manual install: ONLY get 2 files that are inside the folder named "WrapperVersion": get - d3d11.dll & d3dcompiler_46e.dll - then put the file on your desktop and have your Skyrim SE folder open as well (same folder where SkyrimSE.exe is). This is a simple copy & paste or drag and drop. Watch this installation video walkthrough by the author of Re Engaged ENB firemanaf - you can go straight to 6:45 mark in the that same installation video.

2. *Re-Engaged ENB for Obsidian v9.1a[www.nexusmods.com] Manual download and install
*Make sure you download the version for Obsidian Weathers (see the above installation video).
Important: The very first thing you should do after installing Re Enaged (since we are not using Parallax) is open enbseries.ini which is located here \steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition and find the line EnableTerrainParallax and set it to false before you launch your game for the first time otherwise it will remain in the enbcache folder.

3. WE INSTALLED OBSIDIAN WEATHERS BACK IN THE LIGHTING SECTION OF THIS GUIDE
IF you skipped that section go back to the "Lighting & Weather section of this guide and install mods # 111 and 112

4. *ENB Helper SE [www.nexusmods.com] install with mod manager. This "helper" will assist Obsidian & Re Engaged in that each region in Skyrim will now have it's own type of weather, instead of a generic weather all across Skyrim + transition from one weather type to another is much smoother instead of the abrupt changes in a vanilla Skyrim.

Also install this:
5. *Smooth Sky mesh - SSE [www.nexusmods.com] *Recommended For Obsidian (not for Vivid Weathers)

And this:
6. *Obsidian Weathers Watercolor Fix for RWT2[www.nexusmods.com] if you chose the water plugin for RW2 like I do you'll want this plugin

Optional - for those that like Added Darkness
ENB Light
Install this after you set up the above
(THIS will make your game darker and cost a few more fps)
ENB Light WiZkiD Edition.7z[drive.google.com] Light on grass at night! Unlimited shadowed light sources! Transform your Skyrim experience completely with ENB particle lights. This is a Google Drive file. RULES: After All. Nothing should overwrite this.

7.
*Final Steps for all ENB users
*Realistic Water Two Settings for enbseries.ini:
The core textures are designed to work out-of-the-box with ENBSeries water effects. Ensure your enbseries.ini file reflects the following:
your enbseries.ini is located here (we just installed it)
\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition
You are looking for the .ini not the enbseries folder
Here's the setting
[EFFECT]
EnableWater=true

[WATER]
EnableParallax=false
EnableDisplacement=false
TessellationQuality=0
DisableDistantReflection=true
ReflectionAmount=0.8
CausticsAmount=1.75
DispersionAmount=0.66
FresnelMin=0.5
FresnelMax=0.75
Muddiness=0.8
SunSpecularMultiplier=0.5
SunScatteringMultiplier=1.0

Don't forget to save before closing

8.
*Setting your FPS
You should lock your FPS just below 60
I would set it no higher than 59 fps (recommended)

Note:You can lose anywhere from 5-25fps with an ENB depending on the ENB and it's settings
With any ENB, regardless of the version or mod author, you're definitely going to lose some fps with an ENB installed. How much depends on your PC, your mods and of course which ENB you are using. For that reason and the fact I want to first see my game without the enb's effect as I mod it, I add my ENB close to last. By the same token you could add it first, it really is a preference thing.

Waterfalls too Bright with RW2 & ENB?
IF you are using an ENB + Realistic Water 2 and your waterfalls are too bright this will be fixed after running DyndoLOD 3.0. IF you'll NOT be running DyndoLOD 3.0 or NOT running DyndoLOD at all - then use this fix:

FPS DROP?
Experiencing huge fps drop around candles? (for example near the enchanting table)

...There are at least two major changes to be made and I am afraid I won't be able to update the guides for a considerable amount of time.

I'll post the short versions here, but these notes are for the more experienced among us - the real guide will need to have some amplification, explanation, and examples.

The first is easy - Contrary to the guide's recommendations, SSE-Terrain-Tamriel- Full-Extend .esm should only be active when generating terrain LOD (xlodgen). If it is active when you run TexGen or DynDOLOD, an error will occur telling you to disable it. Sheson has notes about why that is the case.

The second is a bit more involved. The large reference bug workaround is an optional but very useful feature in DynDOLOD - but there is some groundwork to be laid. You need to have a particular DynDOLOD DLL and associated set of scripts that are specific to the workaround active in your load order.

Get the specific files from instructions here:
https://dyndolod.info/Help/Large-Reference-Bugs-Workarounds

If the install and configuration are correct you will see this line in the log:
Large reference bugs workarounds: enabled (DynDOLOD.DLL: NG, Scripts: NG, Deleted references: no)
Any other message means you need to examine the files and configuration. See the link above for more detailed info.
DOF - In Game Setting
Once you're in-game go to settings / system and move your DOF slider all the way to the left.
Make sure "Fade" setting are all the way to the right.
Controller not working?
If this game is not recognizing your controller either follow steps 1-3 or 4-6:
  1. Go to: C:\Users\Owner\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition
  2. locate & open your SkyrimPrefs.ini with Notepad
  3. find: bGamepadEnable=1 (make sure it's 1 and not 0)
  4. *Launch game and open the >>>Menu>>>Settings >>> gameplay
  5. make sure the Controller box is enabled/ticked (see image below)
  6. exit menu & enjoy
On the other hand if you want to make sure the Controller option is off then make sure it's 0

Note:
You can also set this from the menu once in game following steps 4-6

Saves
Use "Auto Saves" and "Quick Saves " at your own risk! Hard Save only & do so early & often.

Buggy
So Hard save only and hard save often
Sure you can use them but beware of the fact than many have experienced game breaking bugs using anything but "Hard Saves" on this game, myself included.
Worse yet
Furthermore, when you come to a point in the game where you simply want to go back to a recent stage of the game, for whatever reason (ex: you encountered a glitch in the game or you missed that Achievement), there is nothing more frustrating than not being able to do so because your last several saves are AutoSaves or QuickSaves from hours ago except when you find out that last QuickSave or Auto Save has been corrupted. This happens because Skyrim continually overwrites these saves meaning a previous save may not be available to you other than that hard save you made 3+ hours ago and now you either lose all that playing time or live with it going forward.

This is how I set up the in game Menu (Just remember to hard save early & often)

And do not save over saves

I'm not going to write a wall of text in this section on why all of the above is critical or get into detail on how it happens (see link below for detailed info).

Then there's the Cloud / One drive. You need to disable this.

For detailed information on "Saves" and on "The Cloud" regarding Skyrim see the section titled "Cloud & Save Problems - One Drive" in my SSE Help Guide

You have been warned
Some additional fixes

You also may want

Nordic UI - Start Menu Anniversary Edition Fix[www.nexusmods.com] Skyrim AE only. With Skyrim Anniversary edition, the start menu background from Nordic UI wouldn't show upon starting the game. This simply fixes that!

CC Myrwatch Bug fix-Anniversary Edition[www.nexusmods.com] ix the structures that present problems, such as (see images on Nexus mod page) "visible" water flowing through the structure, badly placed mountains, empty spaces where you can fall and not be able to get out anymore. Make it compatible with Ussep. Modified collision boxes to avoid problems with NPCs. 2 versions - USSEP and non USSEP.

CC Bow of Shadows Lingering Invisibility Fix[www.nexusmods.com] This fixes the issue where the player is stuck with the MagicInvisibility keyword immediately upon retrieving the Bow of Shadows from Creation Club.

Survival Mode Improved[www.nexusmods.com] Survival Mode improved brings lots of balance tweaks and improvements. There has been heavy changes to Survival Mode to bring it in line with how I believe a needs mod should play. Gameplay balance should be somewhat similar to SunHelm. So if you like that mod, hopefully you will enjoy this one as well for other reasons.

My version of Skyrim is 1.6 1130.0. Is this guide relevant to me or should I look for a different one?
alexdoerofthings 5 May, 2023 @ 11:20pm
I wonder what you think of this method. I make a profile, add a bunch of mods, checking functionality as I go. After I’ve have a set of mod types, I clone the profile and repeat.

I do this, because sometimes I get all ocd with adding mods sometimes and will add a bunch, I’ll screw something up, so I’m forced to go back to a previous clone and go from there.

Is there something I’m not considering when I do this? Are the clones faulty in anyway? It seems to be working, but I’m not sure if there’s something I’m overlooking.
alexdoerofthings 3 May, 2023 @ 1:12pm
Yes, I"m using both. Thank you.
Vlad 254  [author] 3 May, 2023 @ 1:02pm
The "Mods" section of Vortex. That is the Before/After rules you'll see in the guide.

But this guide is for Skyrim SE game version 1.6.353 and the current game version is 1.6.640
Some users still use this guide for 1.6.640 but they know to absolutely make sure they are using mods for their game version.

I do have a smaller guide for 1.6.640 titled "Skyrim SE 1.6.640 Vanilla Plus Base Load order"

I'm currently working on another guide for 1.6.640 but that won't be ready to go for another few weeks.
alexdoerofthings 3 May, 2023 @ 12:25pm
To clarify, when you say rules, you're talking about Load Order Rules in the plugin section or the dependency rule order the mod loading section?
Vlad 254  [author] 30 Apr, 2023 @ 11:37am
Been working on it as time permits, actually "working on them" as in 2 guides. The one I'll most likely release first will be in the neighborhood of 500 mods and the other somewhere around 800.

The 500ish should be ready in May as I've decided to dedicate all my time to it. Both guides will be for the latest version of the game which is 1.6.640 although they will work with or without the Anniversary DLC. The guide will clearly state which mods are exclusive to the DLC. Finding the time to work on them has been my biggest concern but I won't rush the process. That said the guide was ready to go last year but Bethesda decided to bring us another update. I then took a break and when I finally did get around to starting over much had changed as related to mods (in a good way) for 1.6.640 - I'm on it but there is this thing that keeps getting in the way called life :steamhappy:

Stay tuned.
Vlad 254  [author] 23 Mar, 2023 @ 7:17pm
@Adeptus Mechanicus - both guides are coming along great. And today, due to a break in my schedule I've actually been able to spend more time than usual on them.
Vlad 254  [author] 23 Mar, 2023 @ 7:15pm
@Mesmerrow - I've never heard of that happening with anyone using this guide. One thing for sure, whichever body mod you are using you should be using the same skin mod and the same clothing mods or armor mods. In other words if the body is UNP everything must be UNP. Same with CBBE or any other body type. If you left them vanilla then you must use vanilla. Once you start combining things start to look different. How bad depends on what combination.

Beyond that your best bet is starting a thread in the forum.

@Adeptus Mechanicus

Well, the only mods I installed are the once mentioned in this guide nothing more nothing less, only downloadable I skipped was ENB, as I already like how Skyrim Special Edition looks.

Also I have not skimmed anything, I have read and re-read every single word written in this guide (even for the stuff I didn’t need to do)

Correction women does not have black spots under their breasts, their breasts are just a bit blockier from underneath (which I have no idea why) making it seem like black spots.

Another thing I noticed is that snow appears to be black which is puzzling and a major issue.
