What is Gambit?
Gambit is a game mode which is PvPvE (player vs player vs environment) with two teams of four. The main aspect of the game mode is the PvE where you fight Fallen, Scorn, Hive, Vex and Cabal. The PvP aspect takes up a little portion of the game mode but has drastic affect on how well you do or your opposing team. The game is overseen by The Drifter.
Pregame information:
The Drifter:
When loading into the game, The Drifter will have a short cutscene where he flips a jade coin. He will then show the coin to your and say what you will be fighting. Those lines are:
  • "Fallen on the horizon!"
  • "Hive! Bring a sword."
  • "Vex on the field!"
  • "Cabal on the field!"
  • "Scorn approaching!"

The Transmat room:
After this you will spawn into a glass room facing another glass room that houses your opposing team. The Drifter is standing to the side in the middle of both rooms. He will then say a random voice line either about Gambit or whatever enemy faction your are against. After a pause he will then say a voice line about the transmat and you will be teleported into the match.
This little window of time allows you to see what your opposing team is running, or for some it gives them time to taunt.

Voice lines:
A very important thing to keep in mind is that The Drifter will talk while you play your match. Those voice lines are not just randomly thrown in, they are said when something happens or when you can do something. As such it is important to listen to them as they provide useful information.
Ingame information - Start of the match:
When the match starts there will be a location on the map where the enemy faction spawns. This location moves around the map as you defeat the enemies, there are only three locations per map. There will be a visible marker above the locations as well as a voice line telling you where they are.
Ingame information - The PvE portion of the match:
Enemies and motes:
Every location has Minors and Majors. Minors drop one mote when killed and Majors drop three to five motes when they are killed. High Value Targets can also spawn into the match. These will be indicated with a glow around them. They will drop five motes while damaging them and another five when you kill them. These motes look like white tetrahedrons (triangular pyramids) and they can be picked up. You can only hold up to a maximum of fifteen motes.

What do I do with these motes?
When you are holding motes you can interact with one of the four sides of the bank to deposit them. The bank is a cylinder that is placed in the middle of the map. When depositing motes you can affect the other team depending on how many motes you have. These affects are:
  • 1-4 motes does nothing
  • 5-9 motes spawns a Taken Goblin on the opposing side
  • 10-14 motes spawns a Taken Phalanx on the opposing side
  • 15 motes spawns a Taken Knight on the opposing side

Blockers and what they do:
Taken Goblins, Phalanxes and Knights represent small, medium and large blockers. They cause the bank to be lowered into the floor and become inaccessible until all the blockers are removed. When there is two or more blockers on the map then the team who sent those blockers will then start to steal your mote progression. This will only stop if you, or your opposing team, kill the blockers until there is only one blocker on the map. After killing all the blockers, the bank will rise out of the floor for motes to be put back into it. Blockers do not drop motes on death.

What happens if someone dies?
If someones dies then all the motes they have collected will be lost. They do not drop onto the floor or spawn elsewhere on the map, they just get deleted. So it is important to not die.
If you do die then there will be a short timer before you can be revive or if you respawn then you will spawn back where you started from on the map.
Ingame information - The PvP portion of the match:
The invade mechanic:
When you deposit 25, 50 and 75 motes into the bank you will then have the ability to have the portal power up. This will allow you to have one member of your team be transported over to the opposing side and vice versa. The invader will only have a limited window of time to do damage to the opposing team.

What happens when you get invaded?
The Drifter will alert you to the fact that the opposing team has invaded you. It is up to you to either hunt The Invader or to run and defend. You will have no knowledge of where The Invader has spawned on the map. The only way you will notice the invader will be a red glow around them. However the spawn mechanic of invading will always put The Invader on the furthest side of the team being invaded. Damage that is dealt to you or to them is done by PvP rules. This means that some charge with light mods may not work on them as well as warmind cells we not work. Invisibility does not work on The Invader as they are still able to see your position and motes while you are invisible.

What happens when I invade?
When you invade you will have a limited time on the other side. This is either 30 seconds or after 4 kills you will then be teleported back to your side. When invading you will be able to see the positions of all the opposing team members and how many motes the are carrying. You will also have an overshield to account for the 1v4 showdown. Finally, the enemy faction on the team you are invading will not harm you and will completely ignore you.
Ingame information - The endgame portion of the match:
What happens when we get to 100 motes?
As soon as you pick up the 100th mote The Drifter will have a voice line telling you that the threshold for The Primeval has been met. These voice lines are:
  • "You're nearly there! Fill the bank! Get that Primeval up!"
  • "Get those Motes to the bank! It's time for a Primeval!"
  • "Bank those motes, and you can summon a Primeval. You want to win? That's how."
After putting 100 motes into the bank The Primeval will spawn in as well as its Envoys. Envoys are majors with elemental shields. When you defeat envoys you will gain one stack of Primeval Slayer, this buff increases the damage you do to The Primeval. This buff can stack up to ten.

Invading in The Primeval stage:
When The Primeval spawns in the opposing team will be able to invade. This is when invading can really cost the team that is being invaded. Every time The Invader kills one of you team members The Primeval will have some health regenerated. This means that if The Primeval is nearly dead then The Invader can potentially make The Primeval regain all of its health.
Strategies to win:
Motes and banking them:
The most useful method of gaining motes is by having a person dedicated to being the main clearer and the other people to be the collectors. This means that the person doing the clearing won't pick up motes so they are able to get into the thick of the battle without having a negative impact on the game if they die. This will indirectly mean that the people collecting the motes will have more motes individually allowing your team to get up to the blocker thresholds faster.

When banking motes you always want your team to be the second to bank. This means that you will purposely allow the opposing team to bank and send over all the blockers they want. This means all you have to do is get rid of those blockers at your own pace as you have no mote progress for the opposing team to steal. Then when you get rid of the blockers you can then deposit all your motes causing you to send over blockers to the opposing side and steal their motes.

Always deposit motes to the bank at either 10 mote or higher, preferably at 15 motes. As well as depositing with someone else for the reason as mentioned above in the last paragraph.

Dealing with invades:
When the invade warning comes up check where everybody is positioned as the furthest point away from your team is where The Invader will spawn. Next you want to get into defensive positions and be in pairs. Titan use your shields and Warlocks use your rifts. Hunters just stick with your Titan and Warlock. The people with the highest amount of motes should be in cover more and the people with the lowest amount of motes will be the main source of firepower.

If you are in The Primeval stage then your should get away from The Primeval and The Envoys and focus all you attention to The Invader. If The Primeval is nearly dead though then the best bet is to find cover while still shooting The Primeval as it will take a while for The Invader to get to you.

When invading:
Always make sure you are ready before invading. Have special and heavy ammo and make sure all your abilities are up or nearly up. If you are not fully confident in yourself then also make sure you have your super up. When you spawn on the opposing team's side, have a look at who has the most motes. You will want them to be your primary focus as killing them puts their team back.

Use the right build:
Certain weapons perform better then others in regards to PvP and PvE. That is why you must put weapons on that help with both.

For getting rid of Minors and Majors easily the Agers Scepter or The Huckleberry is good. The Agers Scepter is good for freezing the Minors and Majors allowing for easy targets. The Huckleberry with it's catalyst in my opinion is better as you are able to keep firing on the Minors due to every death refills the magazine and then rampage which is built up allows you to take care of the Majors.

For invading the one weapon that is useful is The Eyes Of Tomorrow due to it's ridiculous tracking. You can take out half the opposing team or even all of them at once.
Conclusion:
Gambit can be a frustrating game mode but once you know what you are doing you will have a better time with it. I've personally played it a lot and have enjoyed it. The downside is that many people don't understand how to play it and hopefully this guide helps with that.

This is the first guide I have made and I hope that it isn't too boring. With that being said I hope your gambit games go well and I wish you a good day.
