Optimized Mods
Using Optimized mods will help your Fallout 4 run better in-terms of frames and reduced lag, however we are going to be needing a few programs to start modding. Skip to "UnCapping 60 Frames Limit", if you already know how to download mods.
Fallout Directory
Major start for modding is knowing where our Fallout 4 Directory is. Finding your Fallout 4 directory is simple, this can be achieved by going onto steam and hovering over Fallout 4, select properties and press local files with "browse".

This will show your Fallout 4's directory, see if it's under your SSD or Hard drive. It will be handy for when we know where to install our mods on Vortex.
Vortex Installation
We will need to start by downloading Vortex, our bread and butter when it comes to modding on Fallout 4. Their are other alternatives when it comes to mod managers like Nexus Mod Manager, but Vortex will be most easiest for beginner's.
Nexus Mods
Firstly head over to Nexus Mods[www.nexusmods.com]and install Vortex manually with either a custom location or the default. Make sure that you are downloading Vortex, where your Fallout 4 Directory is located (refer to Fallout Directory). Once you have downloaded Vortex, you will log in with your Nexus account, then under general on the left hand side, choose game. Once there you want to search Fallout 4 and simply press manage, it should automatically find your Fallout directory, but if not refer to "Fallout Directory". Once found out where your Fallout is installed, click on fallout4.exe to link Fallout 4 to Vortex.
Fallout 4 Script Extender
Most mods require Fallout 4 Script Extender, therefore we shall install it. To start, head over to F4SE[f4se.silverlock.org] and download and extract the zip. You will need a extracting software, which I recommend WinRAR.[www.win-rar.com]. Open the zip and select all files within it, then just drag and drop all the files straight into the Fallout 4 Directory.
With the new files in your directory, you will see a executable file named "f4se_loader.exe". This is one of the two options you can now boot your Fallout 4 from, either create a shortcut by right clicking on "f4se_loader.exe" for the dropdown and selecting send to~desktop. You can adjust the files icon with right clicking the shortcut and pressing "change icon", then find your old fallout executable file and just copy the icon. Also helpful if you rename the shortcut with f4se on the end to help you remember.

The other way you can boot your Fallout 4 is with Vortex, simply go into your dashboard, which is at the top left under game. Right next to the big Fallout 4 icon, you will see Fallout 4 Script extender that should have a blue file icon. These are the only two places you are allowed to boot your Fallout 4 from now on.
Booting With F4SE
Booting with F4SE is different from normal booting with steam, you cannot boot Fallout 4 from steam now. Booting from steam may corrupt your directory files, which is why you need to boot from Vortex/Desktop as discussed in "Fallout 4 Script Extenders" section. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Vortex Best Settings
Using these settings will increase your overall modding effectiveness. Also you need to have all installed mods in the same disk drive as your fallout 4 directory or it will not work. Vortex will automatically come up with a notification and fix to this, which is nice. These will all be under settings in Vortex. Highly Recommended
Downloading~Mods
We have done majority of the work, now onto downloading mods and installing them to Vortex. To start installing any mods, head to Nexus Fallout 4 Mod's[www.nexusmods.com]. From here your free to download whatever mods your heart desires, you can search your mod with the search bar or just look at most popular of all-time, which is what I tend to do. Once you have clicked on your mod, check in the description if the mod need's any other mods for it to work.
With this mod, it requires F4SE, which is why it's so crucial to download before beginning modding, becuase it's used for most mods. Next to "description" their is files, which is where we are going to get the download our mod from.
It will have two options with Main and Optional file, stick to the main file unless it's a patch or add-on that is needed for the main file to work. Simply press Mod Manager Download and it will automatically extract to your Vortex mods. This is the same process with all mods on Nexus, unless it requires you to download it manually.
Manual Download
If you select manual you will then want to download and extract the entire folder and put it in your "data" folder in your Fallout 4 directory. After that, deploy your mods to make sure everything's running smoothly. Remember to launch from Vortex or Desktop Shortcut with the f4se_loader.exe.
Uncapping 60 Frames Limit
You may of not known this but Fallout 4's frame rate is capped at 60. Meaning it will not go over 60fps and we don't want that. Warning~this will be in your ini files so if you don't want to mess around in the files skip this part, but highly recommended to do so. First you want to open two file locations, first is your normal Fallout 4 Directory, (refer to Fallout Directory if unsure how to) and second is in "Documents-My Games-Fallout4". In the documents file, open Fallout4.ini and it will show a text file, all you want to do is under "Display" it will show "iPresentInterval=1". You want to change the 1 to a 0, then save and exit.

In the same file location open, "Fallout4Prefs.ini". Once inside hit Ctrl 4 and search Ipresent, to make it easier to find. Then do the exact same thing you did with the last one, change from 1 to 0, save and exit. Now in the Fallout 4 directory open "Fallout4_Defualt.ini". Find iPresentInterval once again and change to a 0, save and exit. Lastly go into your directory, select Fallout4, then "Fallout4Prefs.ini". Find IpresentInterval and change to a 0 instead of a 1, save and exit. You have officially uncapped Fallout 4 and you can get your juicy frames you have always wanted.
Boston FPS Fix
BostonFPS Fix[www.nexusmods.com]
Rolling Around Boston you may feel sluggish and can feel a bit off. Boston Fps Fix, will get rid of that making your game feel smoother and run better Downtown. This can boost your frames to up to 10-20 frames. It's essential on terms of optimized mods and highly recommended
FAR - Faraway Area Reform
FAR - Faraway Area Reform[www.nexusmods.com]
FAR optimises and improves over six thousand distant land textures, which means more performance and less stutter. The overall look also looks much better compared to Vanilla. Simple but a effective mod to have.
Insignificant Object Remover
Insignificant Object Remover[www.nexusmods.com]
Yes simply read the title, this removes irrelevant things in our life that is really unneeded. Most of these objects you won't even notice when playing, but still loads in every time you fast travel or simply explore, therefore, with this mod it improves performance and load times, without effecting your overall game. Use the same download method as stated in "downloading mods".
Dynamic Performance Tuner and Load Accelerator
Dynamic Performance Tuner and Load Accelerator[www.nexusmods.com]
Sick and tired of the long loading screens? This will remove the frame rate cap while in loading screens, so you essentially load in faster. This will dynamically change the shadow distance and god ray quality, which just means that if your frames drop drastically, this mod will try and recover from the frame drop and build back up. Increasing the speed of your load times and helping your frames recover from frame drops.
Optimized Vanilla Textures
Optimized Vanilla Textures[www.nexusmods.com]
Optimized Vanilla Textures will do multiple things, optimized textures, higher frames, smoother gameplay, maintaining a better high quality look for fallout 4, but also making it much more smoother overall. Free Fps with no loss whatsoever.
God Rays Disabler
God Rays Disabler[www.nexusmods.com]
having "God Rays Disabler" on will massively impact your game in terms of frames. Receiving a massive fps boost for the loss of God Rays, this mod will work most effective with lower end pcs, but still get a decent kick out of the higher end pcs.
Vivid Fallout
Vivid Fallout[www.nexusmods.com]
Vivid Fallout makes your game crispy smooth, with it making it look 10x better then vanilla, and actually using less VRAM then vanilla. This mod will only slightly improve your performance, but is 100% worth a download, for what you get.
High FPS Physics Fix
High FPS Physics Fix[www.nexusmods.com]
High FPS Physics Fix does not greatly improve your performance, but it shines in certain areas, mainly loading screens. You can adjust different settings within this mod like changing your loading screens to black, to load faster and also uncapping frames within loading screens. FYI, if you have installed Fallout 4 on your SSD, loading screens can be cut in half in terms of loading speeds.
Achievements Mods Enabler
Achievements Mods Enabler[www.nexusmods.com]
Using this mod just allows you to gain achievements while playing with mods, It will not increase your frames but it's nice to just have achievements on. However you need to download this mod manually, but it's quite easy. It's the same as what we did for installing F4SE. Download and extract the files and then simply copy the files to the Fallout 4 directory. Go back to "Fallout Directory" if still unsure how to do so. Their is also a "how to install", just under description on Nexus Mods.
End Of Guide!
You should now have a good understanding of modding, and have thrown in some of the mods recommended here into your load order! If you learnt something or thought this guide was any good, please award or rate, Appreciate even +reps. If you had any issues, just comment down below and I will respond as fast as I can. That's all I have to say. PEACE <3

Use this instead of the Boston fps fix. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/46403 , It's does the same thing except it covers the entire map.

God rays are easily disabled without mods. Go read the comments on Nexus about Boston FPS. The mod is loaded with bugs, is causing some games to CTD, and it hasn't been updated in 3 years. Of the mods on this list the only ones I recommend are FO4SE and Optimized Vanilla Textures.
Bottom line. No amount of Mods are going to fix Bethesda's broken and outdated engine. No matter what you do you'll always get random FPS drops and sutter.

Don't uncap your fps unless you're using a mod to uncap it without physics going crazy, fyi.
