Devil's Nose, Ecuador

Descrizione
Nariz Del Diablo, or Devil's Nose, is a section of switchbacks in Ecuador that was built in the early 1900s to connect Quito to Guayaquil.

Originally known as "the Condor’s Aerie" this section earned it's name due to the number of deaths among the workers. An estimated 2,000 workers died in the construction of the entire line.

The track gains 500 meters over 12 km - to put that in perspective, Quito is only about 2800 meters above sea level. The Devil’s Nose has always been the most popular section of Ecuador’s train track. Even in the 1990’s, when nearly all of the train sections had fallen into disuse and decay, the Devil’s Nose remained open because of the many visitors who came to ride it. The tracks have been renovated as part of the ongoing restoration of Ecuador’s rail network. The train cars have been refurbished as well.

In the creation of this, I generated the terrain like in my guide: first built in Rolling Line, exported, converted to heightmaps, popped into terrain generator, then back to Rolling Line, but this time I used a new colorizer plugin. I updated some old cactus models I had converted and made them paintable and much lower poly. I've wanted a new grass model for a while, so I found a style I liked and edited the UV mapping to match a different texture. Then I changed that texture to apply for 4 different states of grass & brush to apply to the different types of terrain. These do use the Alpha Cutout so keep in mind that when Ambient Occlusion is on they will get a "shadow" even without a shadow turned on. The newer features like Posters made adding the information & pictures on the sides extra easy.

Apologies to anyone familiar with the area as I simplified in many areas and left out a few buildings.
