I hope tynendir will remake this.
I have never been able to make the Romans work. Until you have recruited a decent number of them, they have already become obsolete. This is the problem with most military units and I guess military is only viable if you start early and stick to it for the entire game. You have to have troops already to upgrade them to Legions because otherwise you'll simply be late. The tech for them is very far back in the era and requires a resource you'll not necessarily be able to pick up.
Mycenaeans add stability for expansion and forever war. Free XP, cheaper troops, and an amazing unit. The Roman extra army slot and lower maintenance is unparalleled. Legion last forever. Greek hoplites are great (unlike Civ6) and wreck the Huns. The Aztec lower your unit cost even more and the added land speed allows for faster wins and running down retreating armies. Their district gives you more stability. Jag warriors can hold the line until gunpowder. You can usually end the game when you hit British on maps smaller than huge. ~6 armies of Level 3 redcoats is all you need, (and can afford). You'll have vassals if playing militarily.
The Soviets are the Coup de grâce for anyone who's survived to this point. The added attack bonus is awesome their tank can be fielded in numbers no one can stop. A full slot tank army can take cities on their own.
The weak romans and British and Russian and Americans fit an anti-imperial vibe running through the game. While you can consider America a militaristic culture, nearly any object measure would put their economic, scientific or influence generation as being more critical to their success. The "lightning" is just terrible, and like the swedes you are unlike to use their emblematic unit to achieve anything. The Us Marine Corp would be a good unit for the style of this game, as it may be the quintessential infantry force that set the standard for modern warfare training. Or air cavalry. Or a better early bomber. Or Spec Ops.
