Introduction
Originally mapped to the PlayStation 4 controller.

There is also an Xbox One controller binding, but it has not been tested for a complete play-through.

Your in-game keyboard bindings will need to match the screenshots shown in this guide for the controller configuration to work. They should be the default keyboard bindings in most cases.

With the different game modes played throughout the story; Shadows of the Empire is like a collection of 4-5 different games. There are individual mapping configurations that best suit each game mode.

Within Steam's Controller Configurator these different configurations are known as Action Sets. Switch between Action Sets using the Share/Select button. When switching, you should see the name displayed as an overlay.

In addition to the standard Primary Fire button there is also a Rapid-Fire button. This is so over-powered that it almost removes the need to use the different ammunition types in the game. Since the game was not intended to be played this way; some people may find this ruins the challenge of the game. It is easy to delete or not use.
Snow Speeder Action Set

On Foot Action Set
• Holding in L2/Left Trigger allows you to manually aim (Analog Stick sensitivity is also reduced to steady your aim)

• After obtaining the Jetpack: activate it with L1/Left Bumper. Boost/Thrust is mapped to the X(A) button.

Gun Turret Action Set
As a Quality-of-life improvement, the inverted aiming has been removed to match modern conventions.

Swoop Bike Action Set

Outrider Action Set
Basically the same as the Snow Speeder.

Depending on your preference, you may wish to re-bind Missiles (c) to R1/Right Bumper. and use Rapid-Fire as your primary weapon on L1/Left Bumper.

Trouble Shooting
  • Occasionally, Steam will un-bind the Share/Select button to switch between Action Layers. Re-bind the button to switch Action Sets or re-import the controller configuration.

  • When switching Action Sets, you should see the name displayed as an overlay. Occasionally after looking at the Steam overlay, a ‘glitch’ will then prevent the name display upon switching. Rebooting the game will resolve this issue. Alternatively, you can figure out which Action Set is active through trial-and-error button pressing.

  • If movement or aiming seems too jumpy, consider reducing your mouse dpi or reducing your Analogue Stick sensitivity in the Controller Configurator.

Hi Pickle Rick,
I appreciate your appreciation :)

I don't own a PS5 controller, so I couldn't produce a mapping for it, but the PS4 layout should import very easily :

Connect the PS5 controller however it works best with Steam.

On the games page in your Steam Library open the "View Controller settings" > Enable Steam Input > Click on the big button below Current Button Layout.

In the "Load new Layout" menu, select "Community Templates" select "Show All Layouts"
Roll down until you find the "Shadows of The Empire Gamepad Controls" by E-train with the PS4 controller icon next to it.

Click it, which will import it onto the PS5 controller layout.
I think it will work pretty well from just the importing, or it will give you good base to adjust from there

Hi Cybot, Yes I should actually be referring to Action Sets. Thank you, the guide has now been updated.

Hi nemethdm, mapping the controller hasn't been included in this guide.

With Steam you can load a pre-made config as follows:
The easiest way is to go into Steam Big Picture Mode. Go to your game (have a controller connected). Go to Manage Game. Go to Controller Configuration. Go to Browse Configs.

Then Import someone's pre-built configuration.
To use the config shown in this guide, your in-game keyboard bindings will need to match the
in-game screenshots shown in this guide. I think they were simply the default bindings, but it was a long time ago when I made the controller configuration.

Have fun :)

You wrote action layers, but this seems to be action sets?

I may be missing something but this doesn't seem to give you the process for mapping the controller.
