By Acrillix
I'd like to share some things I learned from mistakes I made that kinda screwed me over later. Also general tips etc.

Your First Few Days
  • Pay attention to not only your base situation (rads, air quality, etc) but the Zone while exploring. As you do missions, make sure to build a few things to keep the storms, rads, and monsters at a minimum. Trying to fix this later is not fun
  • Worry about resources first, then main missions. Before you even do anything else, build a few garden items in your base. Herbs and food can be scarce sometimes so make sure you have some growing because you need a lot of it.
  • Focus on stealth, gathering, and revolver damage first. There really isn't a increasingly larger experience bar that needs to be filled for each level, so don't worry about "missing" a skill (for now)
  • Combat is a last resort. The Prof is not a killer. So going around shooting everyone is bad idea unless you got a ton of alcohol. Putting them to sleep if possible.
  • It's okay if Olivier doesn't get to do a mission. At first, I was only doing main missions and having Olivier do the others. Your companions do not scavenge. They only get the tiny bit of resources out of the cache before RTB. Meanwhile, if you take those missions you can scavenge the entire map if you want.
  • Main missions are generally NOT timed. Nor do you have to do them as soon as they are given. Space them out and make sure you are stocked on resources. But don't put them off completely. There are enough to space them out but enough to keep the story moving.
  • The timers (Days Left: 1) only indicate how many days you have to take that particular mission. They will come back, so don't freak out if you don't get to it in time.
  • You are welcome to stay in missions as long as you like - the only thing that will send you home quickly is the storm, and the consequences that follow.
  • Press "T" while hovering over a mission to see what the resource quantity is. Consider taking missions that have high resources yourself and only sending companions on ones that are low.
Once You Are Settled...
Once you have completed the beginning missions, I'd say around the time you have 3-4 companions is when things start to get complicated.
  • Again, there will not be enough missions for everyone. Always send those who have the highest percentage
  • Change your companions loadouts. You have two choices for improving their chances. You can: Look at what they excel at and get them as high as you can. Or: Look at what stat is low and get that up. I yet have seen little difference between the two, but still testing things out
  • Don't just give everyone heavy armor and AKs. While it may seem that's the easiest way to do things, you should really consider giving out shotguns and pistols.
  • Don't feed failures the same amount you give everyone else. Or they will hate you.
  • You can't please everyone, but you can stop everyone from leaving. Keep the base above green at all times.
  • Upgrade weapons. Upgrade your own weapons first, and when you have enough components to spare, upgrade your companions.
  • Don't feel pressured to keep the base really nice looking, no shame in sticking 100 radios in a corner or plants. Walled rooms with comfort beds is a good way to increase comfort.
