Majors can actually hold their own with more precision and aggression. I can actually assign one or two mechs to a side of a defense objective and they can hold their own pretty well. Even in 80+ difficulty missions.
Something you would have to look at more SPECIFICALLY to make sure your Majors are "Elite" is the last two statements on their Bio. Basically, if the last two lines say something that describes them as an unstoppable force in so many words, You have an Elite. Just a (seemingly) little known fact to help out.
