As much as I think most of the core playerbase doesn't care about it, I can't help but think that a lot of new players look at it and probably think "oh, this is just an old game from forever ago". It doesn't necessarily look "bad" per se, but, well, it looks like it was limited by the time, textures are simple to have as few vertexes as possible, the arcs of things like palm trees are super janky, hitboxes for things like rocks can be... questionable, and textures can look a bit jank as well.
