As you may have noticed, when loading a previously saved game, the difficulty setting is set to "medium".
This could be a problem if you are playing for the "Against All Odds" achievement, that requires you to play on hard difficulty.
First loading the saved game and then change the difficulty in settings, i.e. while playing, could brake the achievement process.
The difficulty option is grayed out before any game is started, which creates a moment 22.

Let us begin

Start a new game, and choose Hard difficulty.
Wait while the game is loading.
You can skip the intro by pressing escape (Esc).
After the intro, press Esc to bring up the menu.
Load your saved game of choice.

You can bring up the Gameplay Options and notice that difficulty is set to hard.

FAQ

Do I have to go through this every time I start the game?
- That is not my experience. Do this once and it should be permanent. (Except maybe if you manually lower the difficulty).
Can I load a save on easy/medium difficulty and still gain the "Against All Odds" achievement?
- No. The save should be created on hard difficulty.

Eh, just finished the game on the hardest difficulty withouth using vita-chamber, and didn't get the "Against all odds achievement", after the game I reloaded a few savegames, and all of them is on hard difficulty...

Once I died at Siren Alley and was born in the vita-chamber wtf. Checked the settings and it was on medium, loaded a previously savegame and put the difficulty on hard. I'm pissed

I suspect that if you do what the poster below me says and edit the .ini, then set it to read-only, your problem will be permanently fixed.

This doesn't usually work but I found a better workaround.

First , go type in "%appdata%" in the windows search bar in the start button and find the folder "Bioshock2Steam" open it and find the file "Bioshock2SP" and open it with notepad.

Second , find the line "GameDifficulty=GD_MEDIUM" and change it to "GameDifficulty=GD_HARD" then save and exit. This should fix the difficulty resetting BUT playing the dlc addons will reset the difficulty again so refrain from doing so until you get the achievement.

Hi, Hirogen. Well, your guideline are actully working and u have my gratitute:) But for me, i will need to go through the guideline u provided everytime i want to load the game, otherwise the game difficulty will go back to easy level... it is not as per your saying in FAQ section that the affect is permanent. :(

Ganesys , what's your experience? Does it reset to medium difficulty, even though you follow the guide?
