The Insidious Design Of Modern Fallout Games

A video essay about addiction, operant conditioning, and how this informs the design of modern, Bethesda rpgs and Fallout in particular. From Fallout 1, Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas, something has changed, and I set out to find out what.

In this video I also talk about gambling addiction and how this applies to the game design of micro-transactions, and how all of this informs what we know about video game addiction in general.

We also go in depth on the attention span of players and how social media and the like are sapping our ability to concentrate on one thing at a time, and even worse, our ability to think through problems.
