My "pro" tip is that each city should probably have only 1 or 2 areas. Any more is kinda weak.

Yea food consumption seems to be exponential. Before I combined the cities each city was probably around +400 food. The result of combining the city was probably an extra 10k gold per turn. Completely not worth it since it also made stability start to be a problem.
