First off, there seems to be a lot of confusion with newbies on what mods are for games like Half-Life, Quake, Duke3D, etc...

Half-Life mods are different from your typical Skyrim mod. Most Skyrim mods are just skins or new items added into vanilla Skyrim. Half-Life mods are typically new games with different levels, stories, characters, weapons, and so on.

A mod that replaces the look of items in the game are called skins or model replacements.
That means you can have skin/model replacements for mods like 'They Hunger'.

Other minor mods are typical called add-ons.

All of the mods on this list are for GoldSrc, the original Half-Life engine. That means you cannot use your copy of Half-Life: Source, which is on the Source engine.

Absolute Redemption starts off as a continuation of the original game. The mod begins with some impressive Gman voice acting and a cutscene. If fact, you'll see plenty of cutscene in this mod.

As for the gameplay, its your standard Half-Life gunplay. The pull of Absolute Redemption is its half-serious tone, it isn't above having a bit of dark humor. The locale are varied and interesting and the the location that stands out the most is "Half-Park", a grisy amusement park full of working rides and games. Give it a try.

Prior to Blue Shift even being release, HL fans were clamoring about playing as one of the BM security guards. Without even waiting for Valve to make the first move, DAVLevels decided to make a mod that satisfied those demands. Azure Sheep was the result of that. The interesting thing about Azure Sheep is that you are paired with a partner that is similar to Alyx from HL2 before HL2 was even released. Another thing that stands out in this mod is all of the new voice acting. A classic HL mod.

Brutal Half-Life is a mod inspired by Brutal Doom. If you are familiar with Brutal Doom then you already know what this means.

First of all it, it ups the amount of gore in the game. You can easily blow the limbs off your enemies. Watch your enemies torn under your merciless prejudice.

A couple of new weapons have been added. The SAW from Opposing Force makes its appearance in this mod. You also get to weld the awesome power of the BFG 9000 from Doom. Other weapons have been modified. For example, the pistol has a detachable silencer and the double blast from the shotgun pushes you back a bit.

Gordon also has a new attack. He can release a punishing kick that causes certain enemies to fall back on their aces. This makes close encounters a more feasible option.

Its still in very early beta at the moment. I am sure that the developer will continue to expand on this concept. I can't wait to see whats next.

The Challenger Deep 2 is a remake of an original Half-Life mod called The Challenger Deep[www.planetphillip.com].

This re-designed mod has been in development for more than 7 years by the same author.

This is classic Half-Life gameplay through and through. You better be a master at crouch jumping before you even consider this. This is mainly aimed at Half-Life veterans. The levels are huge and length is considerable. The modder is good at catching the player off guard so expect plenty of surprises. I'd say its very good at capturing the feeling of the original Half-Life. If you want more Half-Life gameplay, but grow tired of the original campaign after the 100th time, this mod is for you.

Cry of Fear is made by the same team that gave you Afraid of Monsters and the two should be considered companion pieces. This is a quality horror experience and any fan of classic Resident Evil style gameplay should start playing this immediately.

Ever wonder how the Black Mesa Incident would be like if it were set in Russia?

The story takes place in Russia at the secret plant called "Object E7" or "Black Star" at the same time as the unexpected consequences at Black Mesa. G-Man was planning to organize three incidents of portal opening originally. First one - at Black Mesa Complex. Second one - at Black Star plant. The third place is unfortunately unknown. But thanks to the fact that the cascade resonator at Black Star was out of order, the planned incident didn't take place there. Object E7 is a laboratory complex researching anomalous materials and organisms. Its academic adviser is Dr.Victor Shmurghe. He has connected directly with G-Man.
The protagonist is a political prisoner who was moved from a jail to Object E7. His main purpose was to test a prototype of the new protection suit H.E.V.5000. But he could escape during usual testing by chance.

This is a pretty interesting mod that adds in a lot of interesting new weapon skins for classic weapons, like the MP5/M4 turing into an AK.

Defeat the G-man by chasing him to his snowy mountain retreat and fighting his personal army. This mod is very explosive and full of combat. It feels like you are playing Rambo crossed with James Bond. There are some alien enemies, but be prepared to fight a whole lotta army grunts.

Its short, but still not a mini-mod. I beat it in 2 hours. There's a lot of action with less puzzles than your typical HL mod. Its pretty good. However, it does have one thing that I absolutely depise. Wooden crates that do not break, it has tons of those.

Gunman Chronicles is a first-person shooter that requires the player to perform combat tasks and puzzle solving to advance through the game.While gameplay is similar to Half-Life's in terms of health-and-armor systems and artificial intelligence, one major aspect of Gunman Chronicles is the ability to customize each weapon. Each weapon the player obtains has multiple alternate "modes" for various situations.

The Hazardous-Course 2 is a spoof of the original "Hazard-Course" from Half-Life, which resembles the first player training levels. In contrary to this, the Hazardous-Course, as it's name let's suggest, is much more dangerous. Although it's a mod for a first person shooter, the player can only wield a weapon at the designated target range. So it plays more like an adventure. The difficulty is quite challenging, but the rewards are accordingly. The Basic Training is peppered with hidden Secrets, which reveal tools, shortcuts, control rooms, and other features, to ease almost all challenges. There are two Secret Levels and one Bonus Level to discover, and to complete to access the final part of the Hazardous-Course.

Hazardous-Course 2 is hard and I mean really hard, "I Wanna Be the Guy hard". With that said, Half-Life gameplay fits that style pretty well. Quickloads are fast, player movement is tight and predictable, and puzzles are nothing new in HL. I just have to warn you that this will require a lot of skill and patience from you. This may not be for everyone.

Another outstanding mod by the Korean mapping team, Radiation Studios. This mod does a great job mimicing the classic Black Mesa architecture from Half-Life while adding their own spin on it. The maps are great to fight in and the mod will spawn new enemies when you least expect it. A lot of people didn't like the ending, but I quite liked it. Radiation Studios knows what really matters is the journey and this mod has it in spades.

This mod is outstanding. This is made by a Korean mapper, but don't worry you don''t need to understand Korean to play this. There is basically no plot, but you won't care because the journey feels absolutely epic. It felt like playing a new official expansion. You'll make your way through a huge range of different areas in Black Mesa and you'll find a couple of new variations on old enemies. The mod creator will keep you on your toes throughout the entire campiagn. He enjoys catching the player off guard and he even spawns new enemies if you decide to backtrack to that healthkit you saved. The best non-Total Conversion I have ever played. I cannot recommend this mod enough.

What an awesome mod. This mod has a great sense of presentation, humor, and mystery that will keep you engaged throught out its entire lenght. All of the maps are unique and varied that you won't forget. There is some combat, but the majority of the game will be you spending your time trying to figure out its many puzzles. It has a very interesting boss battle that I haven't seen in any other mod, which is welcomed. A absolute must play!

Zombie Edition is a mod based on original half-life concept, but you will play as a headcrab and, what is more interesting, as a zombie. Zombies can mutate to change their characteristics into three types and every type will have at least six upgrades including using new weapons and abilities.

Play as a headcrab in Black Mesa. Kill people. Eat people. Unfortunately, it's a very short (yet enjoyable) mod.

Sven Co-op is a co-operative game originally based around Valve Software's Half-Life. In this game players must work together against computer controlled enemies and solve puzzles as a team.

Sven Co-op is "THE" Co-op mod for Half-Life. It began life in 1999, but has since grown to become a complete Co-op package. Valve eventually gave the mod the greenlight to become a full-fledged game on Steam. No need to own the base Half-Life game anymore, just click the "Play Now" button on its Steam page.

The full Half-Life campaign has been converted into a Sven campaign. While it is neat, the dedicated Sven maps really are the most fun. Jump in and have fun.

Half-Life: Uplink is a demo version of Valve Software's 1998 first-person shooter computer game Half-Life, released on February 12, 1999. The Uplink chapters were cut during Half-Life's development phase, and roughly fit in prior to or during the Lambda Core chapter, or the "Forget About Freeman!" chapter.

The maps are not bad at all and one wonders why VALVe cut them from the final game in the first place. Regardless, Uplink was distributed all over the net as a free demo and it was the first taste of Half-Life for many people.

Pay attention – things are more complex than they might first appear. Intrigue, subterfuge, and mystery predominate. An ancient machine tainted with human technology, guarded by a vicious pack of Nihilanthi aliens. There are few answers, but many questions. Will they ever be resolved?

The self proclaimed prequel to Minerva, now for all of you to enjoy.

This is a single map mod, but it is one of the most interesting maps I have ever played. Valve was so impressed by Someplace Else and Minerva that they decided to hire the guy who made them. That's right, Someplace Else was made by someone who is now a Valve employee.

Some mods that didn't make the list, but I should still mention. These mods are either notable or unplayable due to bugs.

People have been nagging me about adding Scientist Slaughterhouse to the list. Personally I never thought much of the mod, but I have to admit that it has its following. In SS you move from area to area sadistically slaughtering those egghead scientists with new (and admittingly) unique arsenal. There are a few puzzles here and there and some optional combat, but the meat of the mod is killing scientists in unique ways. Its childish, but if its your cup of tea, go for it.

SWEET HALF-LIFE

Sweet Half-Life is unfortunately unplayable with the Steam version of Half-Life. There are a number of game breaking bugs that don't allow the player to proceed. I could dust off my WON version of Half- Life and finish it, but there are more mods out there that I could be playing instead. This is after all, a Steam guide in the Community Hub of the Steam version of Half-Life.

SHL is however a well liked mod. Its essentially the Half-Life story with a bit of anime flare added, which I feel clashes with the original Half-Life art style. Regardless, the gameplay is pretty good and there are some really nice set pieces in there. It has a handful of new weapons that are very futuristic and "animey"?. There is also a mysterious anime chick in an HEV suit kicking ace in the facility. Check it out, if you can.

REISSUES

Reissues is collaborative effort from many different mappers. A collection of unrelated mini-mods rolled into one. It starts off with one of the slickest intros I have ever seen in a HL1 mod and then tosses you into a hub world that lets you chose which adventure you wish to play. Some of these are a hit and others are a miss.

The few I would single out is the Egyptian one called "Spectre of Ra", a Moroccan inspired mod called "Second Wind", and one called "Cyan".

Reissues is unfortunately unplayable due to the number of bugs that plague it, Steam and WON version alike. I did actual finish it with the Steam version, but not without constant reloads and some noclipping. You can easily sequence break a number of maps and the some of the triggers don't set off properly. Reissues is a dirty diamond. Unfortunately the dirt won't come off.

If someone were to fix the bugs in this mod, it would easily belong among the proper list.

HALF-LIFE: UPDATE MOD (DELETED)

Not so much a mod, but rather an update. Originally called the Half-Life: Subtitle Mod, Half-Life: Update Mod is a feature update of all three HL1 campaigns (HL1, Op4, and BS).

New features include:

• Subtitles (with different color text for different entities)
  
• Chapter selection (like in HL2)
  
• HEV suit boot up sequence
  
• Many Bug fixes

Below are a list of mods that are still under development. These are projects that I am personally excited about and I want to help promote their work. I can't promise that they will actually be good, but they do look promising. So keep an eye on them.

Arrangement is a single player & multiplayer, total conversion for Half-Life 1, on development. Mod is divided on missions based upon real scenarios, realistic AI behaviour for both enemies and allies, new graphical effects and tactical gameplay.

The Core is a total conversion single-player mod for Half-Life. Survive the disaster as Maurice Andrews, a low level engineer stationed in Black Mesa during the events of the resonance cascade. Seemingly trapped, Andrews must fight his way to the surface to survive.

Overturn has unfortunately ceased development.
As the legendary Ivan, the Space Biker, go onboard the "SS Vanguard" research vessel in an old-school yet original classic FPS adventure for Half-Life.

This is just the beginning.


I am still questioning whether I should add multiplayer mods as well. This list is already going to huge with the single-player mods alone. I also want to present them somewhat professionally, so this is going to take some time.

I will add more mods at my own leisure. I am only adding mods that are notable, of clear quality, and those that I simply consider special. Sorry, but "My First Half-Life Mod" won't make the cut.
