Substep's probably not so helpful ship building tutorials (Preety old but still works)
By Substep
This guide will be on how to create ships from basic ships to sleek looking ones.
this may or may not help but i will still do so since there are no other tutorials out there.

will probably update this when more stuff comes out.
(or if im not lazy)

make sure to follow the rules and you should be good.
nothing else to be added here lol so on to the next section
Starting out
Well since you are here then that means you have the game or want it.
Meaning i can skip out on most of the parts.
But may add them anyways lol

First off getting familiar with with the game interface
Proceeds to explain self explanatory stuff anyways lol

while these 4 will allow us to see the ship in
Orthographic view
-just a cool view of the ship
Normal build view
-this is where we normally build in
Armoring view
-you can change block armor within this
Modules view
-you can see all of the functional parts of the ship here

Now open the parts tab and you will see this 5 buttons

this will be in order
>the blue one with a box is all of the parts used for ship hull making.
>the orange one will be where all of the ship armaments, range finders will be.
>the yellow green one will be where all of the ship movement parts will be.
>the light blue one will be where all the decoration for the ship is.
>and the rightmost blue one is for the extra stuff submarines and ships need to be buoyant on the ocean.

Key Binds
Since we cant change key binds yet
in the Dock/Ship builder the basic controls are shown on the bottom left side.

>X/Delete
-is for deleting the selected part and removing the part you are currently holding.
>W,A,S,D,Q,E
-is used for rotating selected parts.
>Left click
-is for selecting parts and everything else in the game. duh lol
>Right click
-is for rotating the camera around.
>Middle mouse click/Scroll wheel click
-is for moving the camera and copying selected parts.
>Shift + W,A,S,D,Q,E
-if you want the rotation to only be 5 degrees per press.
>I,J,K,L, Right Shift, Right Ctrl
-for controlling the camera but the arrow keys can be also used instead of the I J K L buttons for camera control.
- Right Shift and Right Ctrl is for camera zooming but scroll wheel also does that

>O
-Orthographic view
>F1
-Normal build view
>F2
-Armoring view
>F3
-Module view

>G
-To select which kind of part snapping you want the game to have
>P
-Is for when you want to paint the ship
>T
-for when you want to move a part in the X, Y, Z Axis
(but doing it in the settings tab is easier and is more precise)
>R
-for when you want to rotate a part in the X , Y, Z axis
(again doing it in the settings tab is is easier and is more precise)
>U
-is for scaling blocks but it can only scale the basic blocks

>Tab
-for opening the parts menu in where you select what parts to put on the ship
(it also allows you to change who the camera follows when in battle/test)

>M
-For mirroring the selected part
(note that it doesn't mirror the whole ship yet and that make sure the mirror plane is always at the center of your ship)

and as for the in battle controls and binds

‘P’: has 3 modes Off, on (small arnaments only), on (all AA arnaments with dual purpose abilities)
‘Tab’: Change ship view (useful for cinematic shots)
‘T’: select and launch airplanes. You can also give them orders here
‘Z’: follow shells
‘H’: honk
‘O’: get the status of your modules
‘~’: command console
‘Rshift’: camera up
‘Rcontrol’: camera down
‘>’:Game speed up
‘<’:Game slow down

and as for the commands for the in battle scene
This is a list of all the commands that work
In order to type the commands you need to press ~ /tilde key

/help
Shows a list of commands

/banzai
Doubles your ship's power, it can stack up

/clearleaks
Clears the water leaks in your ship/restores buoyancy

/submarine
Your ship sinks several meters

/rushb

/setreloadtime_ + number
Will set the turrets reload time to number
Example /setreloadtime_0.5

/railgun
Sets bullet speed to Mach 10

/shoottrigger
Lets you shoot constantly

Note:
You need two underscores one before the name and before the 0 or 1
Also if you ship has with a space this still applies
Example: /load_IJN Mikasa_1

/load_shipname_0
Load a target ship

/load_shipname_1
Load a target ship that attacks you

/showmodules
Shows modules status for all ships

/happnynewyear

/universalgravitation
Turns on and off gravity

/cleardamage
Clears the damage effects on your ship

/fireeye
Show the impact points of shells and torpedoes

/poi
Restores ship health

/landmarch
Allow propellers to provide thrust in the air
Making a basic ship
(This may be a long section)
This also is how i make ships ok? so if you have a different building style then i cant do anything bout that

note: this is just for creating a basic Destroyer you can make ships even without following this guide
but you can still learn a few things. or not lol
since this method can be applied to any ship of any size

First of all we go to the parts tab and select adjustable hulls and then put it somewhere on the block.

and then we delete that block. [press Delete on the keyboard]
and once we do delete the block we now want to select the adjustable block and put the X Y and Z coordinates of the block with in the settings Tab all to 0

after that we figure out what kind of ship we want to make and for the sake of simplicity im gonna go with a destroyer. (since they are generally small)
we are gonna go put 120 meters for the hull length
1 meter for the height
and 15 meters for both forward and backward width
(as well as making bottom roundness to 0)

now that we have the general ship size and width we now start to segment the brick that we have now. (ship segments determine how curvy we can make a ship so the more you have the more curves you can make)

to segment it, go select the main block and press either stack Top,Forward,Backward then move it above the center of the main block then edit the lenght of the block above

i will go with 10m long segments since that's at the middle point of somewhat curvy and at the same time not so much.
(make sure to have a calculator ready since you still want it to be the same size of the brick.
what i'm doing now is just dividing 120 into 10 parts.)

so once that's done we can now begin creating the general shape of the ship.
remember that setting the forward or backward width to 0 will make it pointy

you can also now delete the original brick.
so once you have shaped out the hull to your liking

we can now start making the bottom of the hull
for starters we copy the block (middle mouse click) and then place it below

then after that we set it to 3 meters tall and make it 1 meter smaller in width than the block above,

then we do that for the same block one more time to add another layer except this time we make it 2 meters smaller in width than the one above and make it so that the bottom most block has the part setting of 1 on BottomRoundness.
like so.

after that we set the forward spread and backward spread of the 2 layers so that they line up with each other.
rinse and repeat until you are finished on the front part of the ship.
in which should look like this. remember to not add anything to the point of the ship.

now we get to the rear since that this will be a simple build for now we can just stop with a slight flat rear.
but now we will do something different but still the same.
instead now at the back most block select it. then check the part settings and look for height offset which is set to 0 correct?

well set that to 1 and then use W,A,S,D to rotate that block around so that it becomes like this.

after that just swap the width of forward and backward around.
and do that on the lower one as well in which the outcome should be like this.

now we can add the rudder and the propellers.
remember that you can move selected parts by pressing T or fine tune the position with the setting tab.

and since we cant use the preset propeller shaft we can make one our-self.

open the parts tab again then select adjustable hull block again.
then at the settings we set it so that
Length is 15 meters
Height, ForwardWidth, and BackwardWidth is all 0.5 meters
both top and bottom roundness is at 1
and this should be what it looks like when put on the ship.

Pressing M on the keyboard will mirror it to the other side.
so now we put the propeller there and mirror it as well.

we can now move to the upper hull.
first of copy the original blocks and paste them above it and make it so that they are 3 meters tall except for the back most one at 2 meters tall.

now we create a second layer except only 2 meters tall and only 3 sections of them at the front are 2 meters tall the 4th section will be 1 meter tall.

now we do what we did at the back of the ship and create slopes for that 1 meter tall block.
we put slopes above and next to it like so.

Don't forget to do the back one as well.

then now we add forward spreads on the front upper blocks that are 3 meters tall.

and then we make a new block with another adjustable block.
except this time both the forward and backward width is 0 as well as the forward spread
Heightoffset at 1, and backward spread at 3, and length is 2 meters

now that we have a ship hull we can now plan where the ship funnel and armaments are going to be placed.

so now that we have the funnel and main armaments placed, we can now start putting in super structures for the ship, as well as putting in AA

and once you add the super structure and the AA guns on the ship.
(and other small details that you want)
like so, then we can move on into armoring the ship.

and since that this is a destroyer then we can have the whole hull of the ship be either 50mm or 75mm all around the superstructure being 50mm or 34mm exept for the commander area wich should be "armored" somewhat realistically so it set that to 100mm but you can opt to not add any on it.like so.

now we move to the modules tab to fix some of the elevators.

When you are satisfied with the elevator positions you can go back to the normal build mode.
Now the ship is done go test it. and good luck with your future ships!

as of right now? if without mods the best you can do is place down alot of the catapults and planes around
ggomega 7 Jun, 2023 @ 9:39am
is there anyway to make an actually working aircraft carrier for some reason i cant get my planes to work?
Substep  [author] 21 Jun, 2022 @ 12:35am
just the ballasts in general yeah
☭ god of weird ☭ 20 Jun, 2022 @ 10:01am
i presume the submarine ballasts?
Substep  [author] 19 Jun, 2022 @ 7:06pm
but just add ballasts if you want more armor
Substep  [author] 19 Jun, 2022 @ 7:06pm
this is a very old tutorial now, so i suppose id need to make an update to this
☭ god of weird ☭ 19 Jun, 2022 @ 8:47am
how about armour, any battleship grade armour would make the hull sink.
VanYsH 19 Jan, 2022 @ 12:23pm
Okay, thank you!!
Substep  [author] 14 Jan, 2022 @ 11:38pm
i could probably add a section for basic superstructures, but i think its better to just ask around the discord server for that
VanYsH 11 Jan, 2022 @ 7:31am
Hi there!!! Could we maybe get a tutorial for Superstructures on ships? Have been trying to do a good one for a massive ship, but I am not exactly the best designer lol.
