What are Spec Ops?
Spec Ops stands for Special Operations. The Spec Ops units in Wargame: Red Dragon, as of the open beta, are spread throughout the Infantry and Recon tabs. Spec Ops are great hunter-killer units, and are able to take down most targets you send them against, with air forces and napalm being the most deadly to these units.

Spec Ops are not all special forces or recon units, as i find some units fitted with napalm launchers or grenade launchers ill-suited for operation behind enemy lines, as they cannot take on tanks and helicopters as well as some other units.
Deployment
Spec Ops need to get behind enemy lines quickly, and i find helicopters best suited to this job. Trucks aren't fast enough for me, but your preferences may be different.

I recommend a considerably armed heli, as this will both protect your units and may lead your opponent to think it was just a heli blitz. Send the helicopters up the sides of the map, try to find a place to land somewhere with nearby forest or city.

Once you unload your units, get them to cover right away. Then either retreat your helicopters back a bit, or send them to scout out the path towards your target. This is where the Recon units excel, as their good optics let you scout out enemy units, so you can avoid them. Your main targets are Air defenses of the misslie variety, CV's and artillery.
How, When and What to Attack
How to attack

  • 1. Stay in cover the best you can.
  • 2. Keep all weapons off until attacked or attacking. Stray missiles give away your position.
  • 3. Stay in cover.
  • 4. Look for the annoying targets.
  • 5. Kill them.
  • 6. Run like hell for new cover. The enemy will be pissed you got past them.

When to Attack

  • ++ When there are no enemy units between you and your targets
  • + When there is just one armored unit you can deal with
  • O When there are a few armored units
  • O When there is an enemy Heli
  • - When there is overwhelming armor
  • - - LOTS OF INFANTRY. You cant take out infantry very quickly without lots of napalm.

What to attack (in decsending order)

  • 1. Any enemy CV
  • 2. Arty
  • 3. Recon/Any missle bearing vehicles/mortars
  • 4. Other air defenses, FOBs, and supply vehicles
  • 5. Anything handy
Units to Fear
Anything can go wrong, but there are just some types of units that will ruin your day. Autocannons can quickly panic, then kill you. Napalm is just horribly scary, and hot. Other infantry is extremly deadly, as behind enemy lines you dont have quick backup available. Grenades can also quickly kill you.

Napalm units will ruin your day, burning your units to a crisp after panicking them. Plane-deployed napalm is one of the quickest ways to lose your units, but also the most easy to avoid. Their giant bombs only hit one swath of forest, then it's Evac WInchester. Artillery or tank-deployed napalm is a bit worse, as the artillery is far away, and there is usually a direct line of napalm from the tank. Your best bet is to kill it if it's close enough, and run off into the forest or city if it's not. Infantry-deployed napalm is the easiest to neutralize, and the hardest to spot. Enemy infantry is just as hard to spot as you are, so they can easily get close enough to kill you with their fiery hot Taco Bell induced farts. It doesn't help that the infantry units also shoot at you.

Autocannons are the next ring of Hell, as the sheer amount of bullets coming at you just pwns your poor little men. My advice is to kill them if you're close enough. If not run like hell and get fire support on them.
Suggested Red Force Units
First off is Worst Korea, I mean North Korea. It has only one unit I would use. The Jeongchaldae is a recon unit with a two shot rpg (why does it shoot ten rounds per minute, it only has two shots?) and a sniper rifle. Positioning these on a mountain is best, and turning off everything but the sniper rifle would be wise. Use it to harass infantry or take out recon.

Next we'll go to Poland, with the Komandosi and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥. The Komandosi are a well equipped city sweeping unit. Their CQC machine gun can take out infantry, while their RPGs can damage and kill tanks. The ♥♥♥♥♥♥ have an awesome SACLOS, position them on the edges of cities and forrests to bring armored anything to a halt. Beware air support though, as these guys have just an AR to defend themselves with. I'd recommend sweeping a city with a Komandosi or two, and then putting two or three ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in there as well, depending on the city size. The Piechota Zmech and Niebieskie Berety are cheaper, possibly less effective alternatives to the Komandosi.

Onto Czecohslovakia! The Specialni Jednotki is a weaker Komandosi, but it's ten points cheaper. Take it if you have to. The Pruzkumnici is a fairly good recon unit with a fair number of troops. The lack of ammo for the sniper, and the weaker RPG brings it down a little, but it's still good overall. The Czech army also has ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

The URSS has some really good units, and a deceptive unit as well. Avoid the Spetsnaz in the Infantry tab, I would rather have an ATGM, SACLOS, or RPG than Napalm. Use this guy if you need some badass city clearing, otherwise avoid him. Instead take one of the SACLOS infantry units. The Spetsnaz VMF from the Recon Tab is a much better choice, with an RPG and sniper rifle, these guys are fairly good at CV hunting, save your RPGs until you find one. The Razvedka is a great anti-artillery and anti-anti-air unit.

East Germany's FJB is one of, if not my, favorite spec ops unit. It comes with an RPG AND an IR missile. These guys can kick ass if you keep them hidden. The Mot.-Schutzen is good for holding towns, and add ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and FlaRaks and you have a nice little campsite behind enemy lines.

We can't forget China, well unless it's a national deck, I think we can. Add both Li Jian units, a QW-1, and some AT and you've got a campsite. I find China's Spec Ops rather underwhelming.
My Selfish Wants
I would LOVE to see these units added, they would make Spec Ops much more satisfying.

A dedicated sniper unit.
  • A better sniper rifle, max range between 1.05 Km and 3 Km.
  • Armor piercing rounds for the above sniper, take out some tanks! (At reduced range probably.)
  • At least good optics.
  • At least good stealth.
  • No other AT weapons. They shouldn't be that close.

The ability to pick up units with a heli or other transport.
I feel like an idiot...

Some fast form of boat you could use on rivers and coastal waters as a deployment method for infantry units. Not a rigid hull, more like an inflatable rubber raft type thing.

The ability to self destruct captured FOBs. I hate accidently capturing them, then not being able to deprive the enemy of resources right at their spawn.

Naval Battles
They have these now, have fun.

The sniper unit you are describing exists. Canadian REECE have only a sniper and a standard rifle. The sniper has AP value as well. They are ghilled so very good stealth and they have very good optics.

The rubber boats would be great yeah.

Or night time battles.

Navy seals are my go to unit for sneaking in somewhere and finding high value units, the ch46 is ok but any cheap CV they encounter will be destroyed by the MM1
