If The Sole Survivor had Assaultrons in his side while on the military, then I imagine that they were made to look female to also relief the sexual stress of fellow soldiers who missed their wives while fighting far away.

I don't know if the designer of the Assaultron actually wanted to make a combat bot or if they were originally going for a sex robot.
