Field Medic, the way I play it (UPDATE: 8/24/2023
By Merim
Here I will show you how to be Medic. Throughout my time playing as different classes other than Medics I came across Medics who either couldnt do their job or tried too hard and failed. Of course, I have seen some good medics that knew what they were doing as well, and even has different loadout from what I use. Which made me believe you can be good depending on the loadout and how you use it. But I have seen some that dont know what they are doing and usually the reason that led the team's downfall and cost the team the game. So I'll not only give out my loadout that helps me win and potentially made clutches with them, but go with the basics as well.

Keep noted this guide is based from my experience from what I did, and its not the ONLY method you can do. There are others, this is just my preference as it really helped me through the game, even on a 6 team Hell on Earth.

First things first
I will start off by showing my abilities for my Medic.

This is my abilities, when you start off as a low level, you want to focus on getting all left. This will help benefit your team and it can actually benefit you as well if you choose the left at level 5.

Aside from my knife, syringe, and welder, I will tell you the guns you see from left to right (excluding default pistol as well since obviously everyone should know what that is).

HMTech-501 Grenade Rifle, HMTech-301 Shotgun, HMTech-101 Pistol.

These are the 3 I use that helps me win the game with my team, along side clutches if things goes bad where I'm the last man alive. You can potentially make a comeback even on the worse situation, but varies on the map.

This part is more of "Cut to the chase" to those that prefer to get a quick look and go. If you wish to know how to use them well, reading below will give you more details about how to use them.
Requirements and Role Purposes of being a Field Medic/Objective
Requirements:

A good loadout that helps defend yourself and heal your teams quicker and easier, knowledge of the maps, especially the ammo boxes. Where you find the ammo boxes, will spawn in later time. If not that, at least a good scavenging skill, keep on a lookout for them as you run through areas while being chased by Zeds. Whether its the map you have played it before or its new to you.

Role of being a Field Medic:

Your main goal as a Field Medic is to heal teammates. Thats your only top priority. Killing Zeds is secondary and only focus on killing them if they are in your way, or if your teams are already fully healed. But when it comes to Hell on Earth, your team can die alot quicker as you turn away so thats something to be more aware about. If one of your team dies, it'll make it harder to survive. So you are the the team's hope to stay alive.

Most people would tend to attack Zeds mostly and focus more on killing them than healing teammates. That kind of strategy is why it led to the team losing. I played recently with a Medic player who would focus on killing Zeds and ignored me even when I requested healing. That is a example of "Bad Medic", especially when one notice the team injured and didnt bother to heal. That kind of attitude is what kills the team.

So after I requested healing, and end up dead. The Medic was the last one alive eventually and soon that Medic died too. The Field Medic also didnt have a good loadout that will help stay alive as well so it ended there.

Stuff like this, is why its important to remember how important being a Field Medic is. Medic is a reliable team that helps keep the team alive. Without the Medic, the game would be hard to win. Medics themselves dont give much good firepower comparing to other perks but has amazing survival skill. You will have better syringe that heals you alot and charges faster and you have healing grenades if syringe isnt enough which can heal you and poison Zeds.

If you cant handle the job as a Medic, you best either step down or train more as a Medic on other servers (prefer normal mode on survival, its a basic start). Take a good look of my guide or others that involves being a Medic. We dont want a Medic player that wont heal us, that hurts the team alot. Especially with the lacks of benefits from a Medic.
Progressing on getting them.
HMTech-101 Pistol: Your starter weapon, you will be keeping it through the entire time since it has its role. Dont sell it because the healing dart abilities is useful. Its not the best weapon to rely on, but it helps.

It costs 200, but you are not selling it anyways.

HMTech-201 SMG: This gun is NOT a permanent gun to keep, but temporary. Until you earned enough dosh to get the guns I mentioned. Buy this to help you defend yourself better because the HMTech-101 pistol does not help much. But keep the pistol since it has healing benefits and good for backup weapon similar to default pistol. Considering as a "extra pistol" to keep if you run out of ammo for other guns. It can also be used for healing purposes too, so switching between SMG and Pistol works for healing your team. Sell it if you want Shotgun or Grenade Rifle quicker, but make sure you have enough for ammo too.

This gun costs 650.

HMTech-301 Shotgun: Whether be used as temporary or permanent is up to you. Either way, you'll get this after you get your HMTech-501 Grenade Rifle. This gun may or may not be a pain for some to use because of its scarce. You'll lose ammo quicker than SMG but it does really good damage than most weapons. You might want to use this wisely. Otherwise, if you wish to stick with SMG that is fine too. Sell it for Grenade Rifle if you want, but you'll be needing this back later. If you want to keep it, thats fine too. But the Grenade Rifle is very helpful when it comes to keeping yourself alive.

This gun costs 1100.

HMTech-501 Grenade Rifle: This is actually the FIRST permanent gun to keep. HMTech-501 Grenade Rifle is known to be an assault rifle that has an alt fire where you shoot healing grenades. You can use it to heal multiple teammates huddling together in some camping area (pretty much, you can treat it like a thrown healing grenade). If you are injured, you can shoot yourself with healing nades to get healed quicker and if you have your left abilities as I shown before, it can work on you as well. This happens to be more quicker to use than thrown healing grenades. Although, thrown healing grenades are still useful as backup if you run out of ammo.

This gun costs 2000.

It should be noted that unlike most guns that has a rechargable healing darts, the Grenade Rifle does NOT have rechargable healing darts, and uses up ammo for healing grenades (it also has its own healing grenade ammo, so picking up ammo boxes or grabbing ammo from Support works, you get 2 for every pickup).

HMTech-301 Shotgun (Again): If you never bought the Shotgun or sold it just to get your Grenade Rifle, you want to focus on getting it since it actually serves a important role dishing out more damage than the other guns. Assault Rifle is good, but Shotgun does more damage quicker. Which is why this gun is much more reliable when it comes to facing large zeds. I prefer this over Assault Rifle in my humble opinion.

Reminder that this gun costs 1100.
Reason for my ability choices
Here I will explain why I chose them and why its so important.

This is all left choices, I will go in details on why I use them.

Symbiotic Health: You get health increase and the ability to get healed when healing your teammate. Thats enough reason to get this. No other reason for me to get the opposite.

Adrenaline Shot: This is where it gets interesting. You heal your teammates, you give them also increased movement speed. If you have Symbiotic Health, this ability will apply to you too. Syringes will not work, but healing grenades does. Even if means using healing grenades for yourself. The other ability may seem to look promising, but trust me as much as it sounds good for you, your team wont be happy when they realize they didnt get much benefits.

Focus Injection: Practically steroids, increase your team's attack. Same like Adrenaline Shot, this also works with Symbiotic Health when healing teammates. Healing grenades help, but not syringes. While the other seem like it can help in some cases, it will not help your team.

Coagulant Booster: This ability is the icing on the cake, it reduces the damage your team takes. This is perfect for your team to get away with Adrenaline Shot. A perfect combo. Focus Injection also helps when it comes to self defense for your team to kill quicker and do more damage. This also applies to you with Symbiotic Health and Healing grenades. Syringes wont work as usual.

ZED TIME- Airborne Agent Now, this one I am not too sure which is better because both seemed to be pretty good. But I am leaned to this ability because this ability pretty much releases healing gas that heals your team. This is perfect to lessen the stress with the whole team injured around you. You are pretty much the walking "Healing grenade". Bad news with this ability is that you cant heal yourself, but if you have Symbiotic Health, it can heal you too. The left abilities also applies as well for both you and your teammates.

Here are some things you might not know.

For Airborne Agent, you can also poison Zeds. Possibly killing some of them too. It never mentions in the description as of this post (12/19/2020).

You can still buff yourself or your team with healing grenades even when fully healed. Some may not notice but I noticed it when I did it. This is also useful if you want to use healing grenades anyways for self buffs if you feel you are in danger. Same for your team if you want to give them early buffs before they fight. Not entirely necessary since you want to focus more on healing than just giving buffs but it can help in some situation.

You can also buff your teams with healing darts even if they are fully healed. Just aim at someone and shoot, theres no lock on and it wont chase them unless injured, but if you aim and shoot with healing darts manually, you'll notice the buff applies (specifically the Adrenaline Shot ability shows it). This is really unnecessary and you can just use this for fun. It has no actual values in the game since I personally didnt use it much. I only use it either for fun or give the team an extra boost to run quickly to the trader.

You can poison Zeds with healing darts. You may or may not know that but you can. Most people wouldnt use it anyways either because they dont know or just refuse to do it, which is understandable since it would mean waiting for healing darts to recharge, and no telling when your team needs it.
Reason for my weapon choices
Assuming you got the loadout I showed, I will explain why I use them.

HMTech-501 Grenade Rifle: Pretty much like the HMTech-401 Assault Rifle, you shoot enemies and heal teammates. What makes this so special is that instead of healing darts, you have healing grenades and theres no recharging. You do have to reload. You can use this different ways. You can either use it to heal your teammates, especially when huddling together (pretty much like healing grenades, you can treat them like one).

Side note: On the worse case scenario you are the last one alive, you can shoot one yourself for healing and buffs (if using all left abilities). Perfect for escaping. Finding ammo boxes will be important because without them you will run out of healing grenades which will leave you helpless without them. Ammo boxes are what helps you become unstoppable because if you spam healing grenades to escape, it actually helps give you time to think of a strategy to beat them. You can potentially kill them all with a Field Medic alone with this strategy, but one main problem is the lack of firepower to kill them. This will take more time to kill them, but its possible to get it done. This also varies on the maps, where if one map lacks ammo boxes, this could mean trouble for you if you are the last one alive.

HMTech-301 Shotgun It has more firepower than the guns I have. I mostly use them on large zeds at least to help kill them quicker. I only do this when I have time to, especially if I dont get too many enemies on me. Otherwise, it'll take more time to switch my Grenade Rifle and use it to escape. You want to face large zeds after when you are healed enough to handle them. I sometimes use it on weaker zeds too but I tend to use it mostly on large zeds. If I am out of ammo for Grenade Rifle, then the shotgun will be the next one I will be using.

Side note: This is the gun I will also use mostly when it comes to healing darts if I dont want to use healing grenades from my Grenade Rifle.

HMTech-101 Pistol While the firepower is weak, its still reliable when it comes to ammo. Also your last hope if you run of ammo for both Grenade Rifle and Shotgun, bullet wise. In case you need something to shoot. Its your "extra backup" weapon for pistol, just like default pistol.

Side note: This is the gun I also use mostly when it comes to healing darts. I would switch between shotgun and pistol for healing darts if I want to avoid using Grenade Rifle. So if you rather stick with healing darts than healing grenades, its there.

Alternate weapons to use:

Healthrower: Great weapon against trash zeds, you can shoot your own teammates for healing. So you can shoot heals and shoot healing darts. Be careful when poisoning large zeds, makes it hard for some players to land headshots on them. Its possible to use this with grenade rifle, though make sure to use healing darts and ammo wisely. Would recommend putting more effort on target your teammates for heals more since it'd lead to having only 2 weapons.
Conclusion
Its really important for everyone to know that Medic is truly the VIP in the team. Without the Medic, it can lead to the team losing. Whether theres no medic or bad medic, it can bring problem to the team and cost the game. If the Medic dies also, it can be a struggle. So as Medic, you want to stay alive and keep your team alive. That will always be your main priority. Killing Zeds should always remain Secondary, not Priority.

As I mentioned above, I have seen enough people that didnt play well as Medic. Some did well, some dont. Some used the loadout that does help the team. Some used the loadout thats not good for the team, too focused on damaging Zeds than healing teammates. When someone says "REQUEST HEALING", you have to heal them.

Do NOT ignore the request. When I did this, someone ignored me and was more focus on killing than healing which got me killed. Medics should NEVER focus on killing first. Its understandable if one is struggling to survive or not in range to heal me but if I'm next to the Medic and the Medic just looks at me and then kill Zeds while I am critically injured and keep constantly saying "REQUEST HEALING", it means I need healing.

Also, dont rely on non Medics for healing. You can try to request for healing but if they cant heal you, then they cant. Its not their job to heal you, its the Medic's job to heal you. The purpose of non Medic players to have healing weapons are either for themselves or just heal teammates whenever they got the time to. But never rely heavily on non Medic players.

Medic players is a must to rely on, and Medics MUST get it done. Its their job.

If this task is too much, please do not try it on harder difficulties. I suggest training a bit more and learn to get use to it.

More of all if you do decide to take on being a Medic. Good luck, and I hope you'll be the best Medic the team hoped to get.
