"Formed under high temperatures with intense pressure, kyanite is a crystal found in metamorphic rocks. It is a blue aluminosilicate crystal which can withstand temperatures up to 1100 degrees celsius. When kyanite reaches temperatures above 1100 degrees celsius, it decomposes into mullite and fused quartz. It can often be found inside quartz, gneiss and schist. Its name derived from the Greek word that gave "cyan" its name, "kyanos", which means "blue," and the French word is "cyanite," which mineralogists gave it for its name throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Since kyanite is long and columnar, it is relatively easy to find within rocks. Much like sapphires, Kyanite normally comes in blue, but can also be found in different colors given trace amounts of minerals. For example, kyanite can have an orange color when it has trace amounts of manganese. Kyanite is used in ceramics, electronics and abrasives."
