1 - How do i get a knife?
Knives are special exceedingly rare items and can only be obtained by opening cases.

These cases drop while you are playing the game, or you can buy them on the Steam-Marketplace.

Any case can contain a knife and it is not proved that any of these cases has a higher chance to drop one than the others.

Following cases were developed in various different operations. While the cases of the active operation drop actively, some of them can only be purchased on the steammarket because they were dropable in an earlier stage of the game.

Weapon Case 1 & 2 & 3

eSports Case - eSports Winter Case - eSports Summer Case

Operation Bravo Case & Operation Phoenix Case

Winter Offensive Case

While these cases were able to drop any knife (Gut, Flip, Bayonet, M9 Bayonet, Karambit) the following 2 had a unique tweak to them.

Huntsman Case

The Huntsman case brought in the first knife update to CS:GO - it is the only case to achieve a Huntsman knife from.

Operation Breakout Case

Another case that introduced a new knife to the game: Butterfly Knife
It can also only be dropped by this special case.

2 - All the different types of knives
At the moment CS:GO offers 7 different types of knives which can have one of the 5 available exteriors.

Gut Knife

The most notable feature of a gut knife is the gut hook on the spine of the blade. Originally popularized as an aid for field dressing game, the gut hook is also effective at cutting through fibrous materials like rope, webbing, or safety belts with ease.

Flip Knife

Flip knives sport a Persian-style back-swept blade with an acute point. While the point itself may be fragile, the overall design of the flip knife's design is surprisingly durable

Bayonet

Relatively unchanged in its design since World War II, the bayonet still retains a place in modern military strategy. Bayonet charges have continued to be effective as recently as the second Gulf War and the war in Afghanistan.

M9 Bayonet

This is the M-9 bayonet. Originally intended to be mounted on a rifle, it is also well suited to close-quarters combat.

Karambit

With its curved blade mimicking a tiger's claw, the karambit was developed as part of the southeast Asian martial discipline of silat. The knife is typically used with a reverse grip, with the finger ring on the index finger.

A knife designed for modern tactical uses, the blade is well suited for a range of both combat and utilitarian needs. The unique Tanto point allows for maximum penetration through even the toughest of surfaces.

This is a custom-designed balisong, commonly known as a butterfly knife. The defining characteristic of this weapon is the fan-like opening of a freely pivoting blade, allowing rapid deployment or concealment. As a result, butterfly knives are outlawed in many countries.
3 - The rarest knives in CS:GO
As we all know there are different rarities when collecting anything. It doesn't matter if you collect any type of cards, postage stamps, figures or even paintings. The more rare an item is, the higher it's value will be.

Obviously this also works for all the skins in CS:GO aswell - some knives and weapons are more likely to be found in cases than others. They won't have a high value because the market is flooded with them.

This list will show you the rating of each knife based on their value in Steammarket and their popularity among the CS:GO players:

Gut Knife & Flip Knife - the budget knives

Unfortunately Gut & Flip knives share a bad reputation among the CS:GO Community. Their appearance along with the animations do not feel and look as good as the other knives.

These 2 knives also are the most common drops when getting a special rare item.

Gut & Flips are the lowest valued knives on the Steammarket which proves my point, that these knives are not very popular at the moment!

A positive note on Flip knives:

The scratches and faded colors (on worse exteriors) you see on other knives are actually not that much affected on flip knives. Inspect them ingame because many of them look Factory New even tho they are Minimal wear or even Field-Tested!

Huntsman Knife - gut knives reincarnation?

Huntsman Knives look really, really good. The only letdown to them is that Valve added the animation of gut knives to them. The gut knife being the lowest valued knife in the game is not only because of the sheer look of it, but also because of it's animation. This is also a reason why the huntsman knife is not more popular among the community.

Bayonet - the average valued knife

The Bayonet is an average valued knife starting at 60,00 - 70,00 € for the worst skins and exteriors. It has a pretty "standard" knife look but the animation makes up for it. In fact, many people get this knife just because of the animation.

Bayonets are not as common as Flip & Gut knives but also not as rare as Karambit or M9 Bayonets.

A negative note on Bayonets:

Bayonets usually look really good when Factory New. The bad thing is when we get to the exteriors ranging from Minimal wear - Battle-Scarred. The exterior significantly gets worse and you see scratches and fading colors alot even when they are Minimal Wear. In my opinion Bayonets suffer a huge difference in their appearance or atleast more than any other type of knife.

Karambits & M9 Bayonets - the flagships in terms of all CS:GO knives

These 2 knives are undoubtably the most expensive and popular items in CS:GO.

The price of a Karambit starts at 120,00 - 130,00 € and can vary up to 300,00 - 400,00 € + depending on their pattern and exterior.

The look of a Karambit is considered as the best of each of the knives for a high amount of people in the community. The animation is simply amazing and unique, it feels really smooth and looks stunning when it's being pulled out.

The prices of a M9 Bayonet vary from the 80,00 - 90,00 € mark up to a value of 300,00 - 400,00 € + depending on their pattern and exterior.

They look equal to normal Bayonets but not as thin since the M9 has a bigger grip & blade. They look "mature/manly" in some sort of way which could be one of the indicators for their popularity. Along with the Karambit and Flip Knife the animation looks very realistic and smooth.

Both knives are the rarest of all and are very hard to get in cases which is the reason for their high value.

Butterfly Knife - the yet undefined

The newest addition to CS:GO knives is the Butterfly Knife. While being the smallest knife it also has a special upside: the animation

The Butterfly Knife is the only knife which has 2 different animations that randomly occur when pulling out the knife. It has a very high demand on the trading-market right now because everyone wants to experience the new spinning animations.

How can this knife be valued?

To be honest: I am not quite sure where to sort this knife into my tierlist. Especially some of the higher tiered patterns like Fade, Slaughter or Crimson enjoy a huge popularity/price at the moment which puts them on an equal value with M9 Bayonet's and Karambits. I can see them drop a little in the near future because they only get dropped in the breakout case. This means 100 % of the knives dropped by this case are actually Butterfly Knives. This could mean that they are pretty common sooner or later.

This video shows you the animations for each knife

4 - The different exteriors
Everything that is produced and can be used for several different purposes is going to lose it's value in a period of time. Some examples are your clothes, your car or bike, computers and the facilities in your living room.

CS:GO has implemented 5 different conditions / exteriors for each and every skin in the game. However, a skin can not lose it's original condition which means that your factory new knife cannot become a minimal wear one or vice versa.

The following exteriors are available and can be described as following:

  • Factory New [FN] - This is the best possible condition your item can have. It's a freshly produced knife without any scratches. The colors are bright and shiny and the pattern has a great and unused look. Factory New items normally have the highest value in the game.

  • Minimal Wear [MW] - The second-best condition your item can have. The item was not being used a lot and therefor is almost as new as it can get. You can eventually see small scratches on the blade, the colors alongside the pattern practically remain the same like on a new one.

  • Field-Tested [FT] - The 3rd condition and probably one of the most common aswell. Field-Tested describes an item that was used pretty often already. The colors on the edges have already faded away, it is scratched and looks like an "average" knife in terms of the colors and it's pattern.

  • Well-Worn [WW] - The 4th exterior and one of of the worst your item can have. A Well-Worn item has scratches, missing colors and black spots all over the blade. Even the grip looks really used and worn off which makes this exterior pretty cheap for most of the knives. You can tell that this item was used pretty often.

  • Battle-Scarred [BS] - The worst of all the 5 conditions. A Battle-Scarred knife is as used as it can get. The pattern and/or the colors are pretty much gone and only visible in the middle of the blade if you are lucky. Battle-Scarred items are the cheapest of all for many of the knives with only some exceptions.

5 - All the different patterns & which is the most expensive?
Every knife that has a pattern is supposed to look a certain way.

Standard patterns are:

  • Safari Mesh
  • Boreal Forest
  • Forest DDPAT
  • Urban Masked
  • Blue Steel
  • Scorched
  • Night
  • Stained
  • Vanilla

I will not show you examples because these patterns do not vary a lot from knife to knife. The pattern is basically always the same and not unique. They pretty much look the same on every knife.

However, there are some patterns that are more rare than others. Even tho 2 knives have the same pattern they can be unique in one way or another.

Special patterns are:
  • Crimson Web
  • Slaughter
  • Fade
  • Case Hardened

The rating from most expensive to the cheapest pattern looks like this:
  • High-Tier
    Crimson Web
    Slaughter
    Fade
Night (can be average-tier when Field-Tested or worse)

  • Average-Tier
Case Hardened (can be high-tier with alot of blue)
    Blue Steel
    Stained
    Scorched
    Vanilla

  • Low-Tier
    Safari Mesh
    Forest DDPAT
    Urban Masked
    Boreal Forest
6 - Differences in prices for the same knife & exterior
Sometimes you stumble across some offers where you might ask yourself:
"This guy has a worse condition but wants the same price for it like somebody with a better one."

Fact 1:

It's not unusual, that some knives look better than their actual condition should make them look like.

This can happen at any exterior which means a Field-Tested Knife can look like a minimal wear one.

Example:

Both knives are Battle-Scarred but the left one does look better than the right one. I don't know if this is an actual bug in the game, but many people call it like that.

Fact 2:

Some knives are not as affected by their exterior as others.

This includes...

Blue Steel Knives
the blue on the blade gets darker and you can see some black spots the worse the exterior gets. However, these knives do not have ANY scratches or look worn off in bad condition.[/list]

Example:

Case Hardened Knives
these knives can look rusty/golden with a shiny blue pattern and violet parts on it. These knives are also not affected by any scratches or a worn off look. In some cases the colors get darker and black spots and parts are visible the worse the condition gets.

Example:

Stained Knives
This knife i just as the other two - no scratches, no fading colors or missing patterns. It just stops being as shiny the worse the condition gets.

Example:

These 3 knives should not vary in price as much as other skins because of the reasons i named above.

Fact 3:

Some patterns have a high variety on their looks which makes them more valuable and unique. They all have a signature you should look out for and which i will explain now.

Example for Crimson Web

The signature of a Crimson Web pattern is the amount and placement of webspots you can find on the playside. Some knives have 0 webspots, the example shown below has 1 webspot as you can see which would make it a bit more valuable in theory.

Example for Slaughter

The signature of a Slaughter pattern is the diamond on it. You can see the diamond pretty clear on our example picture but this is not typical on all the Slaughter knives.

Knives with a full diamond on the playside are valued much higher than those without one. A diamond is not the only pattern valued more than the standard one tho. A Slaughter pattern has so much variety that the personal opinion on what looks good and what looks bad has too much weight on the actual value. Our example picture would still be one of the unique and good patterns.

Example for Fade

The signature of a Fade pattern is the amount of color you can see on the playside. The less grey it basically has, the more value it gains. The rainbow pattern can also show a different amount of each color - it could have less yellow and more pink / violet for example which would also result in a different price. The example shown is pretty standard, has a little grey and every color in the amount it "should" have.

Example for Case Hardened

The signature of a Case Hardened pattern is the amount of blue it has. Many standard Case Hardeneds have a high amount of gold/rust and only small blue parts on them. A full blue knife for example would have atleast a 50 - 70 % higher value than a full gold one because it is so rare for a case hardened to show a full blue pattern. The shown example is not a good pattern therfor.

If you have one of the 4 "special" patterns i hope this guide can help you valuing your knife correctly.
7 - How and where can i trade my items with other people?
Since there are many fake- and phishing websites, people are scared of getting hacked or scammed even when using legit and secure ones that are approved by Valve themself.

This chapter will give you some good options to trade or sell your items efficiently. Your items will get the attention it needs and using those platforms/websites will safe you alot of time that's required.

CS:GO Lounge

So, this is the best option you can use. When i found out about this site i was curious whether it's fake or not but the site is 100 % approved by valve. You actually log in via the official valve website - there are no informations saved besides the ones on your profile (inventory, screenshots ect.)

Positives
  • time-efficient: You can save up to 6 trades in no time. People can either search for the knife you have or see it on the frontpage. Older trades can be "bumped" to be shown on the frontpage again.
  • legit: It's approved by valve and saves no login informations of your account
  • easy and helpful beginners guide - everything is explained and shown with pictures
  • you do not have to add someone if you don't like to - it's all based on your browser

Steam-Groups

Another great way to find people who want to trade are Steamgroups. Just search for groups using tags like 'trade', 'skins' or several other tags related to trading.

Most groups are set to public so people can join whenever they want.

Facebook-Groups

This one is not new but i thought i would take it into consideration for the beginners here. All you need is a Facebook-Account and you can start sharing your trades in Trading-Groups. There are a lot you can join - most of the bigger countries even have an own site where you can communicate with people who speak your language.

Simply search for keywords like "CS:GO Trading", "CSGO Skins" or anything related to trading in Global Offensive and i am sure you'll find them!
8 - How and where can i value my Knife?
The first, fastest and easiest way to get a rough value for your knife (or your whole inventory) is CSGO-Value [www.csgovalue.com]

The site gives you the current value for every single item in your inventory.
You can also choose what currency you want your items to be valued at. If you are trading with someone from the US and you live in Europe this is the way to find out what your items are worth in US Dollars without checking google or doing math yourself!

The second site which is actually a little better to value your knife at is called Steamanalyst [www.steamanalyst.com]

You can search the knife or your desire or that you want to sell. Depending on how rare or unique the item is you'll find more or less exact values. Since High-Tier Karambits, M9 Bayonets and Butterflys are rarely sold on the market you won't find an average price for them unfortunately.

These sites are absolutely trustable - no personal data or login informations are saved.
You always login via the official Steamlogin in the top right corner

Another way that is quite simple and and effective is used by many of the new traders:

Asking someone who has more knowledge than you

There are Traders out there who have more than 1 special rare item in their inventory. However - these are not always legally obtained items and many people with more than 10 knives in their backpack could be potential scammers.

If you need your knife to be price-checked you can ask me on my profile or in the comment section below. I have more than enough knowledge to value most of the knives. The ones i can only give you an approximate value are knives that are rarely traded - these would be:

  • Low-Tier Stattrak knives such as: Safari Mesh, Urban, Scorched, Forest ect.
  • Blue Gems: Case-Hardened knives with more than 90 % blue on the playside. The prices for these knives always depend on the buyer/seller.
  • Very rare knives in general: Factory New Night / Crimson, High-Tier Stattraks ect.

Note: The first statement does not apply for every Trader with alot of good stuff. Please do not take this too serious as some people really spent more than a couple of thousand Euros/Dollars for this game.

- Huntsman-Knives have mirrored Pattern, meaning both sides look identically
- Butterfly-Knives have mirrored Pattern, meaning both sides look identically
- M9 Slaughters can have a mirrored Pattern in some cases - i don't know if that works for other Knives or Patterns aswell. I've just seen it on M9's in some occasions

Informations regarding this list:

- All knives sold on the market regularly are left out of this list
- Prices below are AVERAGE (key-value) for each knife meaning there are some going for more and some going for less than that value

10 - Technical terms when trading items
There will be many technical terms and shortversions of words you might not understand while trading. This part will give you a brief description of words that are commonly used during trades.

Note: Any values given are pretty much random. The actual value of a skin should be checked on the Steammarket as soon as you trade skins!

Technical terms:

  • adds / sweets - Additional items you or your tradepartner has to add to a certain item (mostly knives). This is common when you trade with someone who has a higher/lower valued knife and you want to make a fair trade.

Example: Player A trades a Bayonet Fade ~220,00 € for Player B's Bayonet Night ~180,00 € + adds ~40,00 € to fill the difference in value between both knives.

  • Downgrade - Someone wants to get a lower valued knife + additional weapon skins for his higher valued knife.

Example: Player A has a Bayonet Fade ~220,00 € and wants to trade for Player B's Bayonet Vanilla ~120,00 €. Player A does not want to trade 1 for 1 because he'd obviously make a loss on about 100,00 €. However, if Player B is willing to add atleast 100,00 € in other skins Player A could be fine to trade his higher valued knife for a lower valued one.

  • Upgrade - Someone wants to get a higher valued knife and is willing to give you a lower valued one + additional skins.

Example: Player A has a Bayonet Vanilla ~120,00 € and wants to trade for Player B's Bayonet Fade 220,00 €. Therfor Player A should consider to add atleast 100,00 € in other skins so Player B could be fine to trade his higher valued knife for a lower valued one.

  • Lowball - This describes a low value offer for a high value skin.

Example: Player A wants to trade his Vanilla Gut Knife ~60,00 € for Player B's Karambit Fade ~400,00 €.

  • Highball - This describes high wants for a low value skin.

Example: Player A wants to trade his Vanilla Gut Knife ~60,00 €. He's asking for items that are worth way more than his own item.

  • Overpay - In certain scenarios people want you to overpay if you can only offer keys or weapon skins. Many people do not like to trade their knife for weapon skins only but would do it if you pay more than it's actually worth.

Example: Player A wants the Bayonet Fade ~220,00 € of Player B. Unfortunately Player A can just offer weapon skins. In order for Player B to accept this trade, Player A should add a value of around ~250,00 € in weapon skins or keys.

  • Mirrored pattern - both sides of a knife look identical
11 - Beware of scamming methods!
Like any other game where you can sell, buy or trade digital goods, people will try to find methods to get items by using the illegal way.

First of all: What do we consider as a scam?

A scam can basically be anything related to...

  • giving false informations about the item
  • sending/linking fake-pictures that do not show the actual condition, pattern or appearance of that item
  • trying to trick/fool you in one way or another
  • using a 'fake' middleman to perform a trade
  • using a fake/phishing website to get your login data
  • asking you to give your items first - not trading at the same time
  • asking you to sell your items via Paypal - money can be charged back

What's the easiest way to prevent a scam before it even happens?

  • avoid private, level 0/1 or other suspicious profiles with no games played
  • watch out if Valve's security-system gives you a scam alert notification when you are about to trade with someone in the trade-window
  • Do not click on any links people sent you in the chat or on your trades in CS:GO-Lounge
  • Check a knife twice before trading, inspect it right before you trade with someone or even tell the person to show you on a public server. People who won't show you their knife have something to hide!
  • Do not trust screenshots from third-party hosters such as imgur or any other picture-sharing website. They can be edited
  • Do not trust any Paypal offers. The money being offered can be returned to the original owner even if the trade happened

I will demonstrate the most common methods for you and add pictures or other relevant informations.

Fakepictures

Whenever you want to trade, be sure to check the desired item(s) ingame. If your tradepartner is not really trustworthy you should even ask him to join an empty server, so you can check the appearance of any items you are about to trade.

Why does linking, adding or uploading Fakepictures to a trade work?

1 - Any knife you inspect ingame will show the backside of the item, not the frontside. (the only exception are Karambit's - if you inspect them you actually see the frontside)

2 - Blindly trusting your tradepartner and the screenshots he uploaded to his profile without checking it yourself.

Example - Case Hardened Karambit

Real picture showing no blue at all

Fakepicture with alot of blue

As we already know from previous parts the value of a Case Hardened Knife / Weapon is based on the amount of blue they have. Player A tries to trick Player B in thinking that he has a full blue knife when it's actually not blue at all.

Using Paypal

The biggest myth that people believe in is that payments with Paypal are safe.
Unfortunately Paypal does not offer a safety when selling digital goods. Paypal does not want to deal with this stuff because videos or screenshots do not count as proof.
You can find this information in their general trade terms.

Payments with Paypal can be charged back by the purchaserrefunding him all his money. Since you sold a digital item, the Paypal staff will most likely contact you and ask for a delivery note - and this is the part where you have to give valid arguments in order to get your money back.

Bots

A relatively new method scammers use is by hacking/hijacking/stealing accounts. A bot will add you to their friendslist and copy-paste messages with a link to a fake steamsite. The site actually looks just like the real one and you have to enter your logindata and password to proceed. The site then records the data you put in and hands them to the siteowner (Scammer) who then has access to your account.

This example links a website called 'steamcommunly' instead of steamcommunity.

Trading with your "friend" as Middleman

- NEWEST SCAM, BEWARE CAUSE THIS SCAM IS REALLY GOOD -

The Scammer will make a really good offer for your knife and apparently even more than it even sells for. He will tell you to get a friend who can keep the knife in his inventory so he can be sure that he will not be scammed. While you are talking with the scammer he is already recreating the account of your friend (same profile picture and name so you won't see a difference to your buddies account). As soon as he is finished he will invite you and your "friend" to a groupchat and tell you to hand over the knife to your mate.

Now to the tricky part: You think you are handing the knife to your friend but apparently it's a 2nd account used by the scammer himself or his friend.

This scam works 8 out of 10 times. Some people are lucky enough to be on Teamspeak with their friend or chatting while this trade is going on so they can realize it's a scam before it's too late.
12 - Why knives are the most popular and expensive Skins
This last part will answer the question, why knives are the highest valued and most popular skins. Next to some overall facts i can only speak for myself and state my own opinion here. It could be that you might disagree with me which is fine.

Facts

  • Knives have the lowest droprate of any item
  • Knives have new animations, weapon skins remain the same
  • Knives have a bigger variety in how they look like even when the condition is the same

My personal opinion:

  • Knives are some sort of way to "show off" - if you got the "bluest" of all the Case Hardeneds knives out there your knife is something special and other people will admire you
  • Collecting knives or skins in general can be seen as an expensive hobby
  • Switching to the knife is a "bad" habit most of the players have. Now that you can even get a unique or individual knife it's most likely to happen more often

I really hope you enjoyed reading this guide and it can help you in one way or another.
I spent roughly 8 hours from start to finish, getting all the footage, thinking about my knowledge and experiences and finally filling it with content. This is my first guide ever but please give me some feedback or structured criticism.

If you have any ideas or you made different experiences than me, please let me know so i can eventually change any mistakes or wrong informations given in this guide.

I will update this guide whenever Valve decides to add or change stuff related to kniveskins.

Sincerely,

False NiNe / Fumaaz0n

PS: This is my own knife for everyone who's interested!
