Building of The pacificats commenced in 1996 with the intent to optimize ferry travel between Horseshoe Bay and Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. Premier Glen Clark (NDP Party) ordered the bc ferry corporation to commence construction on these ferries in 1996 and they were operational between 1999 and 2000. The Ferry's were custom designed for B.C. Docks with the ability to simultaneously load 2 full length roll through vehicle decks. These aluminum catamaran style ships were designed to specifically to reduce sailing times and to increase sailings. At 400 ft in length and a high speed of 34 knots per hour they produced a forceful wash in the wake, the route had to be changed to go around Bowen Island. The changes resulted in a trip time of1 hour 20 mins, which is only 15 mins less than the original ferries and route with a trip time of 1 hour and 35 mins. With a change in government the fast ferry's were docked after a year of use. Due to the uniqueness of these vessels , the sale of these ships is hindered by the ability to be utilized elsewhere. The Ships were originally sold to the Washington Marine Group for $19.4 million which is substantially less than the 463 million it cost to build, before being sold to luxury yatch builder(ADM Shipyards). Late in 2014 the U.A.E donated all three ships to the Government of Egypt.
