Meet the Engineer
In Team Fortress 2, there is a popular phrase among players: “engy is credit to team”. This comes from the fact that the Engineer has the potential to singlehandedly change the tides of war and put their team in the advantage. With this guide, you will learn the basics of how to play as the Engineer and how to get your team at that sweet upper hand, and keep it there.
The Tools of Destruction (and Construction)
The Engineer, being a support class, does not have the greatest arsenal of weapons (shotgun, pistol and wrench). In fact, he is the weakest class for direct combat. However, the Engineer’s infamous influence on the game is not because of his own personal combat capabilities, but the machines he builds, which help out teammates. There is the dispenser, which heals and provides ammo to those standing near it; teleporters, which allow players to go great distances in an instant; and most importantly, there is the sentry gun, which is an automated turret which fires at enemies in a certain radius and line of sight.
The Glory of the Sentry
The sentry gun, dispenser and teleporters can all be upgraded with metal, which is the resource the Engineer uses to build them. They start at level 1 and can be upgraded to level 3, with varying metal costs for each machine. Upgrading the sentry gun is the most expensive, and that’s because the sentry easily has the most sway and is the right hand of the Engineer, as well as the entire team. When the sentry gun is upgraded to level 3, it becomes a wall of pain for any enemies that step within its range. It is with the sentry gun that the Engineer can establish a controlled territory for their team and push the team forward, or it can be the cornerstone of their team’s defensive strategy.
The Catch...
Except you can’t. You see, these machines are the great strength of the Engineer’s strategy, but also a crutch, since you have to provide constant maintenance. If you leave your buildings alone for too long, enemies will eventually overpower them, and all that metal will be wasted. It is up to you (and fellow Engineers) to make sure your buildings stay active and undestroyed.

You can do this by using the machines in combination with each other. For instance, if you have a dispenser set up near by the sentry, you can keep repairing your sentry gun and keep gaining the metal to do it. Or you can place a teleporter nearby so that you can quickly go back to save it when it is being attacked.
