It was mostly just me experimenting with render and material commands for viewing something on a model that I don't remember now, it's not 'bricked' or anything though

There are a few things you can do. Reinstall GMod. If that doesn't work, try resetting your PC with a fresh install of Windows. That's all I got. I had to reset my PC recently to fix major compatibility problems. Nothing was working besides a few games. Not even internet explorer worked, so I had no browser. A fresh install of Windows might be annoying to deal with, but it can fix so many problems.
