Themes overview
A theme consists of a set of related modifications that can change a hero's appearance, abilities, and stats.

Themes can change the appearance of a hero's head, left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg, torso, or skin. In addition, the hero can gain wings, a tail, or a pet.

Theme conflicts

A hero can have multiple themes as long as the themes do not conflict with each other.

An example of three compatible themes (as shown in the image) are wolf head and legs, blue skin, and a critter pet.

An example of incompatible themes would be a bear tattoo if the hero already has a wolf head.

Spoilers

Note that this guide explains what encounter choices to make to achieve a specific outcome. If you don't want certain events to be spoiled, or prefer to discover things on your own, you should avoid reading specific theme pages.

Themes and maiming

Although some themes may automatically transform one limb upon receiving the theme, most themes leave limbs as human. If you want to transform a particular limb, you must get maimed in battle. The limb will transform after healing, rather than being replaced with a prosthetic hook or peg leg.

Note that only one maiming per hero can occur per chapter.

Thanks to Fringehunter7719 for pointing out in the comments that abilities are assigned to the first transformed arm, then the second transformed arm (rather than specifically to the left arm or the right arm).

Transformations and gear
Transformed arms lose the ability to grip weapons, so your hero may become unable to equip a bow or greatsword, or use an off-hand item.

Most transformed arms come with new abilities, which may offset the inability to equip certain weapons.

Also note that certain slot items may not be visible on a transformed limb, although this is purely cosmetic. Any stat bonuses the item offers will still be in effect.
Events overview
In Wildermyth, events (theme-related or otherwise) are selected by the game as your heroes progress through the campaign. The game chooses a specific event from all the possible events that your heroes are eligible for, based on what your heroes are doing at the time.

Encounter types

Although there are many other types of encounters in the game, this list will only focus on specific types of encounters which can trigger a theme-related event.
  • Wilderness scouting: These events occur after your heroes have completed scouting an unexplored region on the Overland map.
  • Arrive at hostile site: These events occur before a lair battle begins.
  • Mission victory: These encounters occur after a successful lair battle ends.
  • Hook: This opportunity arises when a hero with a matching personality trait (hook) travels across the Overland map. A hook would be a personality trait such as Curious, Loyal, or Slacker.
Wilderness scouting, and Arrive at hostile site events are the most common type of theme events. Only a few theme events happen after a mission victory, or during a hook encounter.

Since the game contains a large number of events which are not theme-related, it's very likely that a non-theme-related event occurs. All you can do is continue scouting and battling enemies, until the desired theme event occurs.

Event targets

The game selects a high-scoring event from any event that matches its event targets. For example, if the event is written (targeted) for a poet or a goofball, but no heroes had a high enough score for those specific personalities, the event would fail (and not take place).

Some theme events target specific biomes (e.g., forest or swamp). Other theme events target specific enemies (e.g., fought Drauven, and one of the dead enemies was a Drauven Skysinger).

In addition to those examples, there are other common requirements that must be met, such as the event cooldown. Most specific theme events can only happen once per game (campaign). So, if the wolf event has already occurred in the current campaign for a different hero, it won't happen again until you start a new campaign.

The second common requirement is theme eligibility. Most themes have one or two eligibility checks:
  • The first checks to see if another hero in the company already has that theme. For example, if you recruit a legacy character that has the wolf theme, the wolf event won't occur at all for the remainder of the campaign. (To work around that, hold off on recruiting specific legacy characters, until the original heroes get the desired themes you want.)
  • The second eligibility check is related to theme slots. As mentioned earlier, some themes conflict with each other, so a hero wouldn't be eligible for two pets*, or two sets of wings, or two animal heads.
* A Pet Drauven-Bird can exist with another pet, as it is located by the hero's shoulder rather than at their feet.

If none of your heroes meet all the theme requirements, that theme event can't happen. Please check each theme's conditions, to ensure that you're not wasting any time trying to get a theme event to happen that simply won't occur in the current campaign.

Event choices and outcomes

Once a theme event starts, keep in mind that the theme is not necessarily guaranteed. Often the event involves the hero making the correct choices (or possibly succeeding at a dice roll) to achieve the desired outcome and receive the theme.

Note that what a hero says in the dialog can differ from hero to hero, depending on the hero's personality, however the specific outcome to choose will always remain the same. Option one would be the leftmost choice, option two the next choice to the right, and so on.
Legacy heros and themes
If a hero has not received the desired theme(s) by the end of the campaign, you may want to hold off on promoting that hero to two-star rank or higher. You can bring that one-star legacy hero back out during the next campaign for another chance at a theme (assuming they meet the necessary requirements, such as a high enough personality score or correct hook for the desired theme event to be triggered).

Once a legacy hero has been promoted to two-star rank, mortal death choices no longer offer a maimed limb (theme transformation) opportunity. Make sure the hero has the desired transformed limbs, before promoting them to two-star.

Once a legacy hero has reached 2-star rank or higher, any new themes (or abilities or augments) they gained during the recent campaign won't be saved as part of their legacy unless you promote them at the end of that campaign to a higher-star rank.

When the event can happen

The Star Dance event can occur after a wilderness scouting has completed. This event can occur once per game (campaign).

Who the event can target

Must not have other star-theme character in company. (This first event could still occur, but the final event will fail and not award the theme.)

  • Max (Poet, Romantic, Healer) score >= 60, and age < 55
  • Max coward, with preference given to coward in relationship with first target
  • Max goofball, with preference given to goofball in relationship with first target
Which event choice to make

This is a three-part event. The theme is not given until completing the final event. The targeted heroes must remain alive to have a chance at the theme, so you should advance the event before taking part in any other battles.

1. Choose option one, which might say, "Let us dance among the stones!" (The specific dialog may vary, based on the hero's personality.) Pass the dice roll to receive the Book of Stars. (Failing the dice roll ages your hero and ends any chance to continue to the next part.)

2. Look for the Book of Stars job on the overworld map, and send your poet, coward, and goofball on that job. Automatically choose to focus on translating the Book of Stars.

3. Send your poet, coward, and goofball to travel to the Glittering/Glimmering Pool. Choose one of the first three choices to select which hero will receive the theme.

(A snark personality will be eligible if bookish is not available, or a healer personality if snark is not available.)

If only one or two hero choices appear, not all three of the heroes were eligible for the theme (such as already having a hair or head transformation from another theme).

If no theme choices appear, and the only choice is "Maybe this isn't such a good idea after all...," none of the heroes are eligible for the theme. Check that a star-theme hero was not already in your company.

Who the event can target

Hero must have human head, and no other crow-theme character in company.
  • ((200 * Hook_Mysterious) + Bookish) score >= 200
This is one of the few theme events that checks for a specific (Mysterious) hook for the event to occur. Without that hook, a Bookish score alone of 200 might be impossible.

If you must have crow wings for a particular hero, arrange in advance for them to have the Mysterious hook. Drauven Wings and Hawksoul are options for heroes without the Mysterious hook.

Which event choice to make

Choose option one, which might say, "You feel like a part of me. Yes, I'm in." (The specific dialog may vary, based on the hero's personality.)

Important: The outcome of the correct choice is randomly selected from one of the following two Crowtouched transformations:
  • Hero receives the Crow Head, or
  • Hero receives the Crow Wings
Since there is no guarantee that you will receive the transformation you want, you may want to save before starting the lair battle, in case you want to try the event again for a different random outcome.

Ensure that you are satisfied with the transformation you received, as the hero cannot receive the other Crowtouched transformation in a different campaign (because the event will not occur if a crow-theme character is in the company.

Encounters that can inflict or remove inhabitation

To be eligible for the Shadow theme, the hero must have previously become inhabited by either not sacrificing a memory during The Witchstone encounter, or by choosing door number three in the Ghosts of Stone and Steel encounter. Michela commented that a hero might obtain the Inhabited hook at character creation, with the right biography.

The hero must avoid the Bidding the Ghost Goodbye encounter, which can remove the inhabited shadow.

When the event can happen

The The Inhabitant event can occur after a wilderness scouting has completed. This event can occur once per game (campaign).

Who the event can target

Hero must have human head, and no other shadow-theme character in company.
  • hook_Inhabited >= 1
Which event choice to make

Choose option two, which might say, "Well, when you put it that way..." (The specific dialog may vary, based on the hero's personality.)
Skeletal
The Skeletal theme offers a unique body, skeletal head and arm abilities, and skeletal legs.

[

Transformations, abilities, and stats
  • Skeletal Head Inscrutable Stare. Inspire terror, causing the enemy to flee for one turn. Has no effect on Morthagi
  • Skeletal Body
  • Skeletal Arm (First) Bitter Scratch. Rake a foe, shredding their armor
  • Skeletal Arm (Second) +2 Warding, +4 Potency, Dagger Strike. Attack a nearby foe
  • Skeletal Leg (First) +0.3 Speed
  • Skeletal Leg (Second) +0.3 Speed

When the event can happen

The To Humble Ends event can occur when a hero possesses the Integrity hook and accepts the optional quest opportunity.

Who the event can target

Hero must not already be Oldwane cursed, and no other skeleton-theme character in company.
  • Hook_Integrity
This is one of the few theme events that checks for a specific (Integrity) hook for the event to occur.

Which event choice to make

Choose option two to keep the dagger

IMPORTANT: This theme is different from all others regarding maiming, in that the Oldwane curse progresses over time and will completely transform your body. Do not choose to become cursed, if you wish to keep any human limbs, or use weapons other than the cursed dagger.
Spell Touched
The Spell Touched theme offers a unique skin.

Transformations, abilities, and stats
  • Blue Skin +2 Potency, +5 Recovery rate, +10 Retirement age
Theme conflicts
  • Skeleton

When the event can happen

The Worlds Apart event can occur after a wilderness scouting has completed. This event can occur once per game (campaign).

Who the event can target

Hero must have human skin, and no other spellTouched-theme character in company.
  • Max ((200*warrior) + Hothead) score >= 200
This is one of the few theme events that checks for a specific (warrior) class for the event to occur. Without that class, a Hothead score alone of 200 might be impossible.

Which event choice to make

Choose option two, which might say, "What happens when you touch it?" (The specific dialog may vary, based on the hero's personality.)
Sylvan
The Sylvan theme offers a unique tattoo, green arm abilities, and green legs.

Transformations, abilities, and stats
  • Sylvan Tattoo +5 Retirement age, -5 Tenacity
  • Sylvan Arm (First) Invigoration. Touch an adjacent target to grant 2 temporary health, twice per combat
  • Sylvan Arm (Second) Shredding Claw. Rake a nearby foe, shredding armor and dealing damage
  • Sylvan Leg (First) -0.2 Speed, +8 Dodge
  • Sylvan Leg (Second) -0.2 Speed, +1 Health

When the event can happen

The Drifters event can occur when heroes arrive at hostile site (immediately preceding the battle) in forest biomes, in chapter 2 or higher. This event can occur once per game (campaign).

Who the event can target

Heroes must not have tattoo, and no other green-theme character in company.
  • Max (Coward, Bookish, Loner) score >= 80
  • Hero who is rival with coward
Which event choice to make

Choose option one, which might think, "I won't flinch." or option two, which might say, "Now hang on a minute. I'm not the one who's sleeping," to select which hero you want to get the theme. (The specific dialog may vary, based on the hero's personality.)
Teeny Wings
The Teeny Wings theme offers ... Teeny Wings.

Transformations, abilities, and stats
  • Teeny Wings
Theme conflicts
  • Crowtouched
  • Hawksoul
When the event can happen

The Dreams of Icarus event can occur immediately after heroes have won a Drauven battle, occurring in a swamp biome, that had a Skysinger foe.

This event generally occurs later on in Drauven campaigns, as the Skysinger calamity card must be in play for that foe to appear in battle.

Who the event can target

No other hawk-theme character in company.
  • Max (Leader, Hothead, Greedy) score >= 80
Which event choice to make

Choose option two, which might say, "I heard him say the word "blessing." Light 'er up!" (The specific dialog may vary, based on the hero's personality.) Hope for the right outcome.

Important: The outcome of the correct choice is randomly selected from one of the following three possibilities:
  • Hero receives the Hawksoul theme
  • Hero receives the Teeny wings theme
  • Hero receives nothing. Two calamity cards are added instead of one.
Since there is no guarantee that you will receive the Teeny Wings theme, you may want to save in battle before killing the last enemy, in case you want to try the event again for a different random outcome.
Wolftouched
The Wolftouched theme offers a unique head, wolf arm abilities, and wolf legs.

Transformations, abilities, and stats
  • Wolf Head Wolf Bite. Bite a nearby foe
  • Wolf Arm (First) Wolf Claw. Rake a nearby foe
  • Wolf Arm (Second) Frenzy. Rake a nearby foe
  • Wolf Leg (First) +0.5 Speed
  • Wolf Leg (Second) +0.5 Speed
Theme conflicts
  • Beartouched
  • Skeleton
When the event can happen

The Wolf Price event can occur after a wilderness scouting has completed. This event can occur once per game (campaign).

Who the event can target

Hero must have human head, and no other wolf-theme character in company.
  • Not Hook_Mysterious and Max (((30 * Hunter) +(10 * Warrior)) + Loner) score

This is one of the few theme events that checks for a specific (Mysterious) hook for the event to occur. The Mysterious hero will have a chance to get stat and relationship boosts along with a unique item, but won't have a chance for the theme itself.

Which event choice to make

Choose option one, which might say, "It... feels like... coming home." (The specific dialog may vary, based on the hero's personality.)
...and a bonus!
This is not a theme, but I'd like to let you know about an event-related ability that you can receive, in case you hadn't discovered it yet.

Improvised Fireball is a fun and interesting ability which you might find very useful.

When the event can happen

The Fireball! event can occur when heroes arrive at hostile site (immediately preceding the battle), and foes are cultists. This event can occur once per game (campaign).

Who the event can target
  • Mystic + hasRival >= 2
  • Rival with first target
Which event choice to make

Choose option one, which might say, "Grab your gear, let's follow it!" (The specific dialog may vary, based on the hero's personality.) Pass the dice roll to receive the ability.

Thank you!
Thanks for reading this far. I hope the guide has been helpful to you.

I'll be updating the guide as the developers add more themes to the game.

Please enjoy your heroes' new transformations, pets, wings, and abilities, and please let the developers know how much you appreciate them and the themes!

Thanks again!

The Skysinger enemy required to trigger the Hawksoul Transformation seems to have been renamed to "Deeven". I was forcibly extending my current campaign waiting for the Skysinger enemy but it never came up. Apparently as I said, the renamed the enemy. At least I was able to unlock that 150 Calamity Card Chievos because of this LOL!

Hi, I don't think I quite understand these target conditions. Let's take the following, for instance:

"Max (Greedy, Leader, Snark, Hothead, Loner) score >= 80
The hero in a strongest relationship with the first target"

Two questions. First, does the target has to have higher than 80 score in all the four traits mentioned - or just one among them? Second, what does "the hero in a strongest relationship with the first target" exactly mean

The guide has not been updated in over 18 months. There are no plans to add anything to it.

The wiki has much more recent theme information. I’d suggest checking there for any new or changed theme events.

Given how you have the Gorgonoid up on the list. Will you eventually also add the Thrixl-wings that one of the mages can get during the "Eluna and the Moth" Campain?

Last time I played, it was the yunger sibling who got it. Will check to see if it the same in my second run too.
