Use your old Save Slot
If you have the old steam version of Final Fantasy VIII, you can migrate that save data to the remaster version. Just follow the step by step.
Step by Step
  1. Go to the directory: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Square Enix\FINAL FANTASY VIII Steam\user_xxxxxx\
  2. Find and copy the save slot wish you like -> The file name is like slot1_save02.ff8
  3. Go to the directory C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered\Steam\<randomnumber>\game_data\user\saves\
  4. Now Paste your save slot, no matter if you replace an exist slotx_savexx.ff8 file..
  5. Start the game & Enjoy!

<username> = Your computer username
user_xxxxxx = The x can be a random number like user_123456
<randomnumber> = This can be a diferent number in every PC like ..\Steam\12341198011061110\..
Notes
  • You can rename anytime the slot and save number -> slot1_save04.ff8.
  • Take care with the slot1_save01.ff8, because in the remaster version this slot is for AutoSave, so edit the save number.
  • Always backup your savedata files before any step!
  • Tested on Windows 10

How about setting up a Junction between "C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Square Enix\FINAL FANTASY VIII Steam\user_xxxxxx\" and "C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered\Steam\<randomnumber>\game_data\user\saves\"?

This means that when OG Steam FF8 creates a save file in "C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Square Enix\FINAL FANTASY VIII Steam\user_xxxxxx\", such as slot1_save02.ff8, the file is also generated in "C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered\Steam\<randomnumber>\game_data\user\saves\" for FF8 Remastered to read, and vise versa. This is because both save locations have been linked.

Guys, why I can't seem to make the image of the game full screen on my monitor. Is it a matter of resolution? There's no option that would make the image cover my full monitor

any thoughts on that?

Holy smokes, I just used this to resurrect save files I had backed up from my playthrough of the original PC release of the game in 2000. I can pick back up where I left off 21 years ago!

Wait.. what happens to the achievements? Do they all just pop a the same time or something? I had an issue like that importing a save on the original which is why I ask; it was a pain to figure out how fix because of steam cloud saves.

it works wonders, I can now play with remote play in my smartphone and also with epsxe in my smartphone when i have bad connection so i can be switching from vanilla to remasters versions through the hyne editor!

It should also be noted that Hyne save editor works for the remaster as well. If you're into that sort of thing, that is.

for anyone refunding the remaster, just do this in reverse to recover the saves. Again take heed about the autosave slot difference
