[Gamer Mentality] Intro
Winning in push is typically dependent on a team’s collective force. In this guide, I will provide some useful tips that will help you contribute to that collective force by consistently shifting the balance in your team’s favor. By always acting with a purpose in mind, a single player can enable their entire team.
[Gamer Mentality] Individual Impact - Contributing to the team’s collective force
Going into the game, it’s helpful to think that both you and the enemy have equal weight in terms of starting balance and everything you do impacts that balance whether it be in your team’s favor or the enemy team’s favor.

Everything that you do as an individual, has the potential to change everything
  • Every time you get a kill, that is one less enemy that could potentially kill your teammates.
  • Every time you throw a smoke, you change the visibility on the battlefield and that can impact many things.
  • Every time you throw a firebomb, you limit the available paths at a given time.
  • Every way in which you position yourself effects map control and can change the distance the enemy has to fight to reach an objective.
The list can go on, but you get the point. Everything you do has an impact. Even when you are seen by an enemy, that influences the battlefield by drawing the attention of another player who could have shot at someone else. When I say EVERYTHING, I really mean everything. With that in mind, you can begin to start acting with purpose by understanding the impact of your actions. For example:
  • Throwing a smoke that protects your entire team from a single machine gun camper, thus your team’s collective force will be stronger as more players will survive on their way to an objective.
  • Throwing a grenade into a room that your team is trying to push into. You effectively can clear a section of a room with the grenade and then push into the uncleared sector.
  • Watching the enemy wave counter and seeing the enemy spawn. With this knowledge, you can predict where you will run into the enemy by understanding the distance the enemy will have to run to reposition, and how long it will take them.
This can be just as helpful for players who aren’t good at gun fights, since they can make purposeful impacts by changing other game variables.
[Gamer Mentality] Being a super soldier
Being a super soldier and fulfilling your individual potential involves having a strong game sense. Having a strong game sense means understanding the way in which game mechanics and player variables work. To improve your game sense you must:

[Pay Attention]
Mechanics you should pay attention to:
  • The respawn wave system
  • Weapon effectiveness
  • Player weight
  • Utility effectiveness

Player tactics/variables you should pay attention to:
  • Player noises and how players might respond to noises
  • When to have your weapon ready
  • Player movement, positioning, and timing
[Paying Attention] Game Mechanics
    The respawn wave system.
  • Understand that after at least 3 enemies OR friendlies have died, the respawn counter will begin.
  • Understand that when the enemy wave counter decreases, the enemies just respawned.
  • Understand that when the enemy has just respawned, you know for a FACT that from a known location, enemies will be advancing. This will help you place yourself effectively. Especially if you are capturing an objective and you see the enemy wave respawn. The objective might be momentarily clear, but you know in a few seconds that the paths that come from the enemy’s spawn will likely have enemies pushing through them soon.
  • Understand that if you got 4 kills before the enemy respawned, AT LEAST 4 enemies are going to be coming out of the spawn.

    Weapon effectiveness.
  • Understand the bullet velocity of the weapon you are using. Higher velocity means less aim leading at longer distances, less damage fall-off, and higher object penetration.
  • Understand the caliber of your weapon. Larger calibers do more damage and will typically kill in 1-2 hits vs 2-3.

    Player weight.
  • Understand that higher weight means slower movement. This includes the ADS time. If you want run faster and aim faster, decrease your weight.
  • There are even times where it is effective to have no ammo carrier at all to further reduce weight. One way to see it is that most players die before they can even use all 5 magazines with a light carrier, so in this case it could be better to not have one at all. Though with a carrier, you can fire more shots without paying so much attention to ammo.

    Utility effectiveness.
  • Understand how strong firebombs are. You can easily delay enemy advancements and allow yourself and others to focus on more exposed paths.
  • Understand how weak firebombs can be. Sometimes you can run through a Molotov if the path of fire is short, for example running through a molotovs edges. I don't know the exact measurements, but there have been times where I have run through entire molotovs without dying. If you have full health and you're fast, you might be able to survive.
  • Understand how flash bangs not only blind enemies but cause the enemies to scream when they're hit. You can expose several hidden players by simply air popping a flash bang and listening for their screams. I do this a lot and it is INCREDIBLY effective.
  • Understand different ways to use smokes. Smokes can even be effective defenders’ tools if used properly. For example, if your team is pushed back into an objective and you’ve lost all forward cushioning, you could smoke the outside of an objective entrance so that enemies must come through the smoke where you will be ready waiting. Although attackers can effectively use smoke to fight smaller battles within the smoke, so results can vary.
  • Understand the usefulness of gas masks. The gas mask is an incredible buff. It keeps you from coughing in smoke which keeps you more hidden and less likely to die. I find its very effective as an attacker to throw 2 smokes into and objective and then fight in the smoke with a mask. This keeps you from being exposed to too many defenders at once.
  • Understand the uselessness of armor. Armor at best, will protect you from grenade damage, and maybe allow you to take one more bullet when being shot at through the wall. It will also significantly increase your weight and take up gear points. The level of protection it offers is so small compared to the level of impact is has on your weight. It is generally advised to NOT use armor.
[Paying Attention] Player tactics/variables
Player noises and how players might respond to noises
  • Understand that your actions can be noisy. Every time you shoot someone, assume another player heard you and that you are now exposed. When exposed you must play more carefully as someone might be watching the door they just heard you shoot from, or they may begin to hunt you. An effective way to avoid being audibly targeted is to move/re-position IMMEDIATELY after killing someone.
  • Additionally, this means that when you kill someone, you should expect another confrontation. You may need to check your corners/check your back. Always assume someone is around the corner.
  • Understand the nuances of player footsteps. Many times you can tell when another player on the other side of a wall hears you and is ready for you. For example, if I'm walking/running and i hear an enemy on the other side of a wall also running, but the enemy suddenly stops making foot step noise or slows down in general, chances are that the enemy has heard me as well and is preparing to fight.
When to have your weapon ready
  • Understand when you should have your weapon ready, and when you can sprint without worry. When rounding corners, entering rooms, or just generally peaking anything that isn’t KNOWN to be clear, you should slice the pie with your weapon ready. If you know the area is clear for you to full sprint, you should take advantage of that by getting to a position faster or swarming the objective.
  • If you google slice the pie, you will find proper explanations, but in short you should clear everything by being minimally exposed while you ADS to clear sectors.
Player movement, positioning, and timing
  • Understand player movement, positioning, and timing. These are the MOST important variables to pay attention to. With a solid understanding of how fast players move on average, when they’re moving, and where they’re moving to, you can strategically be in the right places at the right times, opening opportunities to cut off spawn waves, defend your team while they capture, or open holes in the enemy’s offense/defense, enabling your team further.
  • Generally, after you see a spawn wave happen is when most players will be moving. You already know where they’re coming from so use this to your advantage.
[Attacking] Intro
In Sandstorm, push maps are BIG and OPEN
Which means the defenders will have many options when it comes to defensive positioning. Defenders can very easily watch multiple lanes from varying distances, increasing their collective defensive power.

This alone can make it very difficult to even REACH an objective. Therefore, you must decrease the enemy team’s collective defensive power and increase your team’s chances of survival. This can be accomplished with the help of:
  • Smoke grenades + Gas mask
  • Getting offensive kills
  • Consistent forward movement
[Attacking] Smokes & Gas Mask
As previously mentioned:
Sandstorm maps are BIG and OPEN
Defenders have just about a billion places to sit still and shoot you from. This makes the defending team incredibly effective at thinning out the attacking team before the attacking team even reaches the objective. A well-placed sniper or LMG can cripple your entire team.

Approaching the OBJ with a thinned-out team means less collective attack force and a huge decrease to your chances of taking the OBJ. You need to increase your teams’ chances by countering enemy efforts. This can be done with a smoke grenades and gas mask.

Smoke Grenades
By using smoke grenades, you limit the number of enemies that can see you at once. This alone drastically increases your chances of survival.
  • Having only 1 or 2 enemies see you is much better than 5+.
  • The less your team is visible, the less they get picked off and that means more bodies for the objective and larger collective attacking force.
  • The more smokes you throw as a team, the closer you can get before having to engage the enemy.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to limit the potential number of enemies that can shoot you at once.
  • Without smokes, you are exposed to every defender camping and watching your lane.
  • With smokes you severely limit the number of enemies you are exposed to at once. Additionally, smoking off a camper makes them effectively useless while that smoke is popped.

  • ALWAYS REMEMBER
    1vs1 or 1vs 2 or 1vs 3 is a lot easier to fight than 1vs10+.
Gas Mask
  • The gas mask in vital when using smoke as an attacker. It will increase you chances of survival significantly by decreasing how detectable you are. By being less detectable, you survive better and contribute to the team’s collective attack power.
  • When running through smoke without a gas mask, you will COUGL LOUDLY. This gives your positions away and tells the enemies that you are coming. With the enemy ready for you, you will likely die.
  • With the gas mask on, your player will NOT cough. It will conceal your movement through smoke and allow you to engage before being exposed.
  • A very effective way to use smoke + gas mask is to shroud and objective in smoke, put a mask on, and then enter the smoke and fight inside of it. By doing this, you limit the number of enemies who can see you while you are taking on various 1v1s or 1v2s, etc.
[Attacking] Consistent Forward Movement
When attacking it is important to understand that you need be consistently moving forward and taking map control. The only players who should be purposefully stationary, are those that have found a spot in which to effectively support their team by killing enemies entering the area so that the rest of the team may advance with a higher chance of survival. This is usually snipers/LMGs.

Moving forward consistently is incredibly important:

By moving forward you gain control
If you kill enemies and do not move forward, you are allowing the enemy to respawn and re-position. Therefore there it is important to take advantage of the kills you get. Before the enemy has a chance to counter your kills, you should advance and move the fight closer to OBJ.

It does not need to be fast, but it cannot be too slow. Consider changing pace when the enemy spawn, perhaps you'll need to move slower or faster depending on where you're at.

By being stationary you lose control
By sitting still, the enemy are free to re-position when they re-spawn.
By sitting still, you waste friendly smokes.
By sitting still, you waste the effort of those who died pushing alone.
By sitting still, you literally make your teams ability to capture an objective weaker, and remember we are trying to bolster the collective attack power of the team.

Acceptable reasons to be stationary
(+) Watching enemy objective entrances.

(+) Snipers/LMGs watching common enemy camp spots and approach lanes.

(+) Sitting somewhere and getting enough kills that you are actually making it easier for your team to advance. This means getting 5+ kills per wave. If you're camping and only getting 1-2 kills per wave, you're likely hurting your team by not advancing to help the push.

Unacceptable reasons to be stationary
(-) Going prone behind a sandbag while smoke is popped and remaining there while your teammates have already started pushing.

(-) Clearing an area and not advancing. This allow the enemy to simply go back to where they were.

ALWAYS REMEMBER:

DO NOT RENDER YOUR KILLS USELESS.
MOVE FORWARD.
TAKE GROUND.
GAIN CONTROL.

Great guide - if people just followed your first 2 points (smoke and mask) it would make the mode a lot more enjoyable to play.
