Monogatari revolves around Koyomi Araragi, a third-year high school student who became a "quasi-human" after becoming a vampire for a short period of time. One day a classmate named Hitagi Senjougahara, who is very reclusive, falls from the stairs of the school straight into the arms of Koyomi. He then discovers she has no weight, defying the laws of physics. Even though he was threatened by her and warned to stay away and forget what he witnessed, Koyomi offered help and introduced her to Meme Oshino, a strange middle-aged man who lives in an abandoned building and made him come back to being human again.

The series introduces a new protagonist for each bow, each involving an element of different Japanese folklore. Each one has an item that symbolizes its ghost.

The striking feature of the series is the long and accelerated dialogues between the characters, which contain a large number of parodies and references to other series.
