First you need to see this video to get bumblebee working on steam:

1. allow user to run bumblebee "gpasswd -a 'username' bumblebee"
2. Make steam use some of your own libraries:
# mv .steam/steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6 .steam/steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6.backup.

# ln -s /usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.6 .steam/steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6
# ln -s /usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.6 .steam/steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/lib/i386-linux-gnu
#ln -s /usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.6 .steam/steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu

Safest way is to reboot after installing. Afterwards type "/etc/init.d/bumblebeed start" to start the bumblebee.

Using Nouveau doesn't work for me, so I switch to Nvidia:
