What 4,000 hours of CS:GO has taught me | Tips and tricks
By LANGE
This is a follow up on a great guide by Riot I thought that I would have more to add, since I have the double amount of hours.

About me
My gaming alias is LANGE
I started playing Counter-Strike: Source (CSS) in 2014, and transition to CS:GO in late November, 2015. I am a competitive guy and have been grinding ladders and been on some amateur teams.

I play ESEA [play.esea.net] to challenge myself. Playing against the high skilled players.
The absolute basics
This section is for newcomers. It will help you understand the basics and learn what to improve on.

The absolute absolute basics
In Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO for short) they are two teams. One Counter-Terrorist (CT) and Terrorist (T) They is different maps in CS:GO, but if you play the bomb defusal mode (The main mode) They is two sites, A and B. Sometimes a middle or something else, but maps are different. Each side has 5 players. The T's job is to shoot they way into one of the sites, and the CT's job is to defend these sites. When the T's has planted the bomb the CT's has 45 seconds to retake the site. It takes 10 seconds to defuse a bomb, but 5 seconds if you have bought a kit.

Weapon basics
As basic as shooting is in CS:GO, it's one of the hardest things to master. You should just focus on a few guns. Every gun has a different spray pattern. When you start out, you should not focus on all 30 bullets. Only the first 5-10. Let me show you.

The AK-47
The AK-47 is the most used gun in CS:GO. You can only buy the rifle on the T site.
The AK-47 spray pattern is shown here. [prntscr.com]
The left picture is where you bullets will go, if you don't control your spray.
The right picture shows you, how you should pull your mouse (Up to down), to get a perfect spray.
When you just start out, focus on the first 5-10 bullets. That's the (nearly) straight line.

Practice the spray pattern
They is two ways you can practice it:
1 - Go to an offline server, find a wall, start shotting and controlling your spray control.
2 - Go to this workshop map.

Both are great, and work just as good as each other. If you chose an offline server you have to write these commands in your console:

sv_cheats 1 ; mp_roundtime 60 ; mp_roundtime_defuse 60 ; sv_infinite_ammo 2 ; mp_restartround 1

Remember, all you have to do is pull down your mouse for like 5-10 bullets. Then continue, until the bullets are pretty close to each other. The great thing about this trick, is that you can do that with the majority of the guns.

The M4A4/M4A1-S
The two M4's is the CT's version of the AK-47. It has similar spray control, but not 100% the same. If you learn the 10 bullet-technique you can transfer it to the M4's aswell.

First of all, you need to understand the differents between the two M4's.
The M4A1-S is the least common of the two. It has less bullets, but it's more accurate. Therefore, more noob-friendly.
The M4A4 has more bullets. It's less accurate. The majority of people can control the M4A4, so no need to have less bullets.

The big green gun
The AWP is the most common sniper. I will not tell much about this, because they is already made an amazing video by WarOwl.

The Submachine guns (SMG)
The SMG's shoots faster, has more bullets, does less damage, you move faster with a SMG and have a higher kill reward. The SMG's are meant to be used close or medium range. A rifle will always have the advantage on long range and medium range.
At the begginer level SMG's can sometimes win over rifles, but not when you get better at the game, so get a head start and use the rifles.

Also important:
Try to aim at where you think and enemy will appear. If you look at the pros, you can see that they crosshair never is placed randomly. It's always where and enemy will appear, so if someone appears you have to adjust your crosshair as little as possible. This is called crosshair placement. There is a section for it below. Under the section "Intermediate level CS".

Improving when you can't play CS:GO
When you want to improve, but can't play CS:GO go watch some pro matches. Search on YouTube or maybe some is live. It does not even have to be top-level. Just someone that is better than you. Try to study the way they play. You will learn some new tricks and it's fun to watch pro games! - BUT REMEMBER The pros have played countless of hours and sometimes they will do something stupid, but it works, because they aim is insane.
If you do what the pros does, you will not succed.

Just keep that in mind.

Last words of the basic section, but also the most important
When you shoot ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS stand still. This is the basic of shooting. Practice this by going to This map. Aim at the bots head and shoot. Every time you kill a bot, move and continue.
Low level CS
Introduction
Now when you have to basic covered, we can start on improving your aim and start with utility usage. This section is mainly targeted Silver to Gold Nova, but you can still learn something, if you are higher ranked.

Improving your aim
Controlling your spray
You know the basics of shooting - 5-10 bullets control and stand still when you shoot. - It's time for take it up a notch.
Now you should learn to control all the bullets.
Take a look at This [prntscr.com] again. The right picture is how you should move your mouse.

First 10 bullets: Down, a bit to the right.
The next 5 bullets: The the left.
The next 7-10 bullets: The next 7-10 bullets: Pull to the right.
For the rest: For the rest: Pull to the left.

No one can pull a perfect spray control off. It is not possible. You should practice the spray pattern the same way you practiced the 5-10 bullet technique.

1 - Go to an offline server, find a wall, start shotting and controlling your spray control.
2 - Go to this workshop map.
If you go to an offline server, types these commands:
sv_cheats 1 ; mp_roundtime 60 ; mp_roundtime_defuse 60 ; sv_infinite_ammo 2 ; mp_restartround 1

When you have learned the AK-47 spray pattern you should learn the M4's spray patterns. M4A1-S [csgoskills.com]
M4A4 [csgoskills.com]
(Notice, they are not the same)

In theory, you should learn the AUG, the SG553 and the basic SMG's, but focus on the basic to start off.

Basics of crosshair placement
But what is crosshair placement? Crosshair placement is where you place your crosshair. You need to place your crosshair where your think your enemies will appear.
When you start out, learning crosshair placement just aim where enemies might pop out. When you get to a higher level you can focus on being at head-height, close to the corner, avoiding enemies crosshair placement and etc. - For now, focus on where enemies might appear. Avoid looking at the ground, or the sky.

This skill is much harder than it sounds.

Counter strafing
This skill will improve your game massively. It gives you a huge advantage over your enemies.
But what is counter strafing? If you shoot and move at the same time, your bullets goes all over the place. If you move to the side and when presses the opposite move-key, you will stop for a second, then you can shoot and be 100% accurate, while still being hard to hit.

Explained in more detail:
If you move to the left, by pressing A, then press D to move right, you will stop. In the gap between you move to one side and you move to the other side, you should shoot.
It should be like this:
Move, stop, burst, move to the other side, repeat until someone is more dead than Forsakens carrer.

This is a really hard skill to learn, but start now by practicing it.

Learning a new map
You need to learn new maps. At this level is really easy. All you have to do, is to learn the timings.
If you don't know what that is, it's basically the chokepoint where T's and CT's meet, if they both rush from start to finish. This is important since you avoid getting caught out in the open.
Intermediate level CS
Introduction
You are about to read a guide on how to text your level a bit higher. This section is for everywhere from Master Guardian to Legendary Eagle Master. It might seem like a big gap, but you have to practice the same stuff.

Improving your aim even further
So now you should be able to control your spray with the majority of the guns. You don't move and shoot at the same time. You are decent at counter strafing. You know only need to master one skill.
The flick.

Many players think that you should only flick with an AWP. mMm no no no
Just think about how many time you have to adjust your aim with rifles. Flicking is important.
When I say flick I don't mean you playing like KennyS [i.makeagif.com] What I mean with flick is you adjusting your aim fast and precisely.
E.x. You play A on Mirage. You are holding ramp. Unexpected, a wild enemy appear in palace. You have to master flicking to him fast and precisely

How to practice em' flicks
They is a lot of ways you can improve you flicks. What I have learned after 4,000 hours of CS is this way:
  • Go into Aim_Botz
  • Pick AK-47
  • Close 3 walls, so all bots spawn on one side.
  • Aim on a bot's head and flick as fast as you can to another bot's head.
After a while you can do it faster, more consistently and more precisely

You will notice that you prefer to flick from one side to the other.
There is a different between flicking from left to right and right to left. Practice them both

Improving your crosshair placement
So far, you aim where you think an enemy will appear. Now you should aim where you think the enemies head might appear. Aim at head level. This picture explains it very well. [prntscr.com]

A good tip, is to aim close to the corner, because no one is going to teleport out in the open.

Utility usage
A good aim can only get you so far. You need to be good with grenades. Practice this by going into an offline server and write some commands.

Download my config here [gyazo.com]
(I am sorry, I can't link MediaFire links)
If you don't know how to put the file in the right folder and activate it - Search on YouTube.

Find or recreate smokes, flashses, molotovs or nades and continue practicing and repeat the grenades. It's the only way to remember so many different nades.

I have created some documents, that will help you improve your grenade-throwing!
Smokes [docs.google.com]
Molotovs [docs.google.com]
Flashbangs [docs.google.com]

Movement
You should by now be decent at your movement, but now you should work on skill jumps. The best way to practice these skill jumps is to subscribe to this map Some of them are outdated. Just skip them.

Not all of the jumps are there, but the most basic ones are. You can practice the rest offline on a server.

The economy
The economy in CS:GO is very easy; when you learn it.
I could not find a picture on the new economy, so I will show them under:
  • Pistol round lose: 1900$
  • Second round lose: 2400$
  • Third round lose: 2900$
  • Fourth round lose: 3400$
  • Fifth round lose: 3400$

This means that if you lose the pistol round, you should not buy anything (eco), then you will be able to buy fully the third round. If you win, always full buy.
High level CS
Introduction
This section is for Global Elite and above. (Mostly above). You should know what to improve at this level. You just need to do it. Let me help you.

Your inner clock
You should already know what this is, but I think this is this level's biggest problem.
Your inner clock is you knowing if a player stands somewhere on the map, how long do you have to go where you want to go, before he will arrive.
This will prevent you for being caught out. You know, when you say "How is he already there?" - That's a sign that you need to practice your inner clock.

So how do you practice it? A lot of people learn the skill just by playing the maps and therefore knowing the timings, but if you want to speed up the process this is what you can do:

  • Go to the map you want to practice on.
  • Go to the spot you want to start your run.
  • Take a mental note of the clock.
  • Make you run and notice how long it took.
  • Do the same for the opposite site.
You should only practice obvious spots. E.x. A CT on long, spotting with AWP. You are a T, alone on B. How much time do you have, until he comes from CT or Tunnel?
Stuff like that. Inner clock is pretty situational. If you had to learn every spot, it would take way too long.
Notice:
No one says: "Okay, he is over at X, I am over at Y - That means I will have Z seconds, until he comes"
No one thinks like that, but you should have an approx.-number in your head.
Being on an amateur team
Introduction
Being on a team is much different than playing a pug. It's more structured and higher level.

Playing well as a team
When you start out as a team, it's hard to play well. The process takes years. If you take a look on a team like Astralis. Astralis' core (Dupreeh, Device and Xyp9x) has played together for decades. They know each other - In game and out game. They know how each of them play. They don't need to call for a flash, double peek etc. They just know. (Obviously they call this, don't get me wrong).

So, when you start out, expect to lose. None of your games should be wins.

The IGL
The IGL is the most important role of them all, but there is something most of you get wrong.

Control your players, don't own them

What I mean by this is, when you make a strat and you want to be passive and slowly taking map control, but meanwhile two of your players want to make an aggresive play. Don't stop these players from making this play. Imagine how S1mple would play, if he wasn't allowed to open up sites, or play like he wanted to.

Watch this playlist to learn more about IGL'ing.
The psychological side
Introduction
CS:GO is a mental, just as much as a shooter game and a strategy game. This section is for all levels.

Getting out of a slump
There is great video , but I will explain it with my own words.
When you are in a slump, you think that you are bad, can't aim, can't do anything right, basically. But there is something, you have to understand:
  • You can't be bad all of the sudden. That's not how CS:GO works.
  • It's all in your mind.

A lot of people would tell you to get a break from the game. That works, but you don't have to. When I am in a slump, I pug less and practice more. That works for me.
Common for all levels
Introduction
Some thing you should do, regardless of your level. They are listed below.

Reviewing YOUR demo
Watch this video to learn how to probably review your demo.
A golden rule in reviewing your own demo:
Don't justify a bad play, just because it worked
This is important. You might have done something bad, but because your hit an insane shot, or you enemies are bad it might have worked. When you get on a higher level it won't work.
You should find a demo, where you played bad to see as many mistakes as possible.

Reviewing OTHERS demo
This type of revewing is different than the one above. Now you don't have to be critic of the the player plays. Now you need to focus on finding a new great grenade and/or a nice play you can implement in your own game etc.
You should find a demo of someone who is better than you and played well.

Tips for coming across nice to your teammates
One thing you have to understand, is that you don't know who you are playing with. You can't expect you and your teammate to be best friends for the whole game.

Don't tell your teammates what to do. I know, sometimes your sister plays better than them, but it will only annoy them, if you keep telling them what to do. Let them play. I am not saying you can't call for drop, ask for a boost or a flashbang, but just let them play.

@AlphaRW - That's fair critism. I decided to to get certain tips to certain levels, because Low level players should not practice like a high level player. If you are a low level player, but feel like Intermediate or High level helped you more, fair. Use the guide as you please.

The point was to not let lower leveled players stress about high level stuff, like inner clock, keyboard aiming etc. Because you should learn how to walk, before you run.

good guide, I approve but, it's hard to attach certain tips to certain levels. It is not based off of your mm rank but, your gamesense, which is correlated to mm rank but, they can be vastly diferent. For example, I am a gn1 with 3000+ hours, I have awful aim and decent gamesense so, the intermediate tips helped me more than the beginner tips, which I had learned in the ~1000 hours I spent in silver I. But, most people spend less time in the silver ranks and thus an average person with my rank would have 300 hours and would benefit more from the begginner tips.

this is so well done!

@D!ZOUNJE
I like to picture it this way..
IRL, my brain controls where my eyes will move when I see something appear in my peripheral vision.
However in CS (or any FPS), it's now my hand controlling my "ingame eyes" (crosshair) to look where I need.
So in answer to your comment, focus on your enemy! and your crosshair will follow. Depending on how much you practice, will depend on how accurately it does so.
daizen 31 Oct, 2018 @ 3:24am
nice guide my problem s that when the enemy appear i dont know where to look at my crosshair or at the enemy ?
LANGE  [author] 31 Oct, 2018 @ 12:41am
@-Will - Because they are other ways to play, than ESEA leagues..? I have played ESEA events though.
