Summary
These Modifications will increase your Star Wars Dark Forces Performance and Graphics

- OpenGL enables the Steam overlay
- openglnb is a "sharper" renderer than standard opengl and looks better if you're trying to replicate the look of the original
- 1600x1200 is the desktop resolution
The Modification
Find your Config

Not thaaaat complicated, try to find the g ame in your Steam Folder:

[Your Steam directory]\SteamApps\Common\Dark Forces

For me it looks like:

Edit the file
You need to edit this file. If you do not know what you are doing, make a copy of that file (in case you brake it).

How do I open the file?
Ahm ... did you create a copy? Just saying.
Use notepad (++) or any Text-Editor.

[sdl] fullscreen=true fullresolution=1600x1200 output=openglnb [render] scaler=none aspect=true [cpu] cycles=auto [mixer] rate=49716 blocksize=4096 prebuffer=30 [sblaster] sbtype=sb16 sbbase=220 irq=7 dma=1 hdma=5 sbmixer=true oplmode=auto oplemu=default oplrate=49716 [autoexec] @echo off mount c game c: dark exit
Edit Controls
When the title first came out, WASD was not a common control configuration. The default controls now use a simple, more modern layout.

W A S and D = Move Forward, Left, Backwards and Right
Spacebar = Jump
C = Crouch
Mouse 1 = Primary Fire
Shift = Run
CapsLock = Walk
E = Open/interact
R = Secondary fire
Tab = Map
Pgup & PgDn = Look up and Look down
F1 = P.D.A.
F2 = Nightvision Goggles
F3 = Cleats
F4 = Gasmask
F5 = Headlamp

By hitting Control + F1 you will open the DOSBox keymapper.
For example: if you want to change Secondary fire to X instead of R…
1) Click on the R key on the keyboard graphic displayed.
2) Click “Add” at the bottom of the screen.
3) Press “X” on your keyboard.
4) Click on “Save” at the bottom.

Additional Info (Vsync, Screen tearing)
If you are expierencing screen tearing or any other effect which is similar, you can try the following options:

Updates, people ... Updates!
Check your DoxBox Version - its alsways good to have the latest version.

DoubleBuffer
One option which can help to avoid screen tearing is to play around with the buffer settings. Depending on your config, it might not be active and you could try enabling it. It solves it for a lot of people - here is how its done.

1. Find the section about your screen settings. Usually its the place where you set the resolution and or the settings for fullscreen/windowed mode - it should have [sdl] as header.
As an example I will use the config i put in this tutorial.

[sdl] fullscreen=true fullresolution=1600x1200 output=openglnb
Just add the following line to it - "fulldouble = true"
looks like this now:
[sdl] fullscreen=true fullresolution=1600x1200 output=openglnb fulldouble = true

It did not work :( - what else?
If this does not help you ... you'll face a bit more of testing and playing around with the config instead of playing the game.

CPU Cycles
The cycles usually are set to "auto". For most of the people it works perfectly but since you are reading this, you might be the 1 % for which it does not.
You can try setting you cycles manually but that is a lot of testing and might not even lead to a solution, I ll try to explain how to play with it.

Find the CPU settings - it looks like:
[cpu] cycles=auto
If you really want to play with it, there are three different modes - fixed, max and auto. Before adding stuff in here, you should start your game and try "Ctrl+F11 and Ctrl+F12" to raise and lower the value.

If you want to edit cycles - try this:
[cpu] cycles=auto 5000 50% limit 50000
or
[cpu] cycles=fixed 5000

I sure wish they would make these easier to figure out, or like GOG not even need to really screw around with it. I can't figure this stuff out, and I've tried everything in this and a couple other posts. The game starts to launch, the dosbox window opens, then they both just close and it's like I didn't even hit the play game button at all

21:10 and 3440x1440 here. I just changed it to fullresolution=3440x1440 and it starts full screen.

You can just just drag the setup files into a dosbox desktop icon to open it and get the DFORCED patch for mouselook

I already knew about this but people should be doing this for all dosbox games on steam. It makes them look normal and pretty.
