1- Download this zip file
https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/87-the-bards-tale-2005-windowed-mode/

2- Extract the d3d9.dll file in the downloaded zip into the installation folder (the other files are not used).

"...\Steam\steamapps\common\The Bards Tale"

3- RMB click on "The Bard's Tale.exe" in installation folder, Properties, Compatibility, and select Disable fullscreen optimizations

4- Enjoy

Definitely seems to help performance, thanks. I will say as a note though that everything in my game blew up to massive size upon re-entering it. I had to go to the launch graphics and change the resolution to get it back to normal. Other than that it's great.
