Intro

This guide will help you get all the achievements within the game, as well as a way to complete the challenges within the game, which is needed to get certain achievements.

You may want to bear a few things in mind.

2022 UPDATE- Sonic Games

With Sonic Origins releasing on the 23rd June 2022 there is some bad news that has been seen because of this. From 20th May 2022, SEGA has mentioned that they will be delisting Sonic 1,2,3 and Sonic CD from Steam. Because of this, it will mean the Sonic games that are part of this collection will be affected.

If you have the Sonic games, you will be able to get all the achievements and the challenges completed. However if you are reading this after 20th May and haven't brought the collection prior to that date, you will not be able to get 100% on this game.

If this changes, I will update the guide. But right now, there isn't a way to get this 100% game if you don't own the Sonic games.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Firstly, if you play using the simple launcher you will not be able to get the achievements.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secondly with some of these challenges you may need to press certain buttons to make certain features happen in those games. So know your setup.

Xbox Controller

This is the normal control if you are using a xbox controller. Sometimes you will need to make use of the rewind or fast-forward button. LT will rewind the game, which is useful for you if you take too much damage, lose a level or make a mistake which will make your current run harder. RT will fast-forward the game. This is very handy if you have to get through a lot of text, waiting for certain characters/minions to get to a certain place or rushing through title screens/cutscenes.

Also A,B,C is X,A,B on this pad. And if you want to make a quick load, you can use the R stick and press up, while down will do a quick save. This is handy as you don't have to keep exiting the game to reload/save it. However sad to say the game no longer can have buttons assigned, so you will have to choose a layout which you most like.

Keyboard

If you have to use a keyboard, you may want to change some things around. I mean it has assigned Up, Down, Right and Left to the arrow keys and not WASD. However if you were to change to WASD, your hand will be very near to the Rewind and Fast Forward buttons. All you would need to worry about is where to assign A,B,C,X,Y and Z, but to be fair most games only rely on A,B,C, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

So while you have a lot more options to assign certain keys to places, you won't have that same feeling as if you were playing with a controller.

Playing other versions of games

For these achievements it has been mentioned by Falloutdude83 that you may be able to get some of these achievements by using different versions (whether that be alternate/international) of a certain game.

For example, in Japan Streets of Rage 3 is known as Bare Knuckle 3. So what you can do is rename the file for Bare Knuckle 3 to match that of Streets of Rage 3. So in this case rename g1013.pak (Bare Knuckle 3) to g0054.pak (SoR3). Falloutdude83 has mentioned he got the 'Good Job' achievement because of this. However when KyEzOaR played this version the 'Good Job' achievement didn't unlock, so just be wary of that if you do use other versions of the same game. If you are wondering how to use this method, GOTTA GO FAST has explained how to do so:

1. Played Streets of Rage 3 (JP) on normal difficulty, made a save.
2. Made safety copies of g0054.pak, g9012.pak, g9013.pak and all SOR3 save file folders.
3. Deleted g0054.pak and g9012.pak
4. Renamed g9013.pak to g0054.pak
5. Deleted original save folder for Streets of Rage 3 (JP)
6. Overwrote all saves in Streets of Rage 3 and Streets of Rage 3 (EN) save folders with the safety save from the Streets of Rage 3 (JP) folder. **You can't just rename the folders, you have to swap the files.
7. Opened SEGA Mega Drive & Genesis Classics.
8. Navigated to Streets of Rage 3 in GAMES LIBRARY; made sure that Streets of Rage 3 was selected (not the EN or JP version!) and loaded safety save directly from there by pressing the [LOAD] button. The game should load correctly and NOT give you the "NTSC only" screen.
9. Beat the final boss.

However there is also another downside. If you launch the game, there is a chance you may get a message saying that the rom is not a game and won't load up, so this isn't a guarantee. On a side note, if the game doesn't load up, you can try to move over the save files as well. This may be the reason why it wouldn't load up. GOTTA GO FAST, as an example, mentioned certain problems that happened when using alternative versions of certain games, so here are some things to bear in mind:

Renaming g9013.pak to g9012.pak instead, but whether or not the g0054.pak file had been deleted, the achievement didn't pop.

There may be some steps detailed above that aren't strictly required; for example, if deleting g9012.pak or the SOR3 (JP) save file folder matters. It was just the state of my game files when the achievement popped.

Save file folders are found in Documents/Sega Mega Drive Classics/user_

.pak files are found in C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Sega Classics/data

If you wish for more information about the game files, please check out Falloutdude83's guide, as it will go into more detail about this matter:

https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=398334923

As you can see the guide is complete, however that said, if you do have any advice that may be important to completing either the achievements or challenges in this game, please make a comment.

High Five
High Five
Columns - Gain a high score of at least 5000 on easy

When the game has loaded, click Arcade and then on Easy. You should be able to get a 5000 or more in no time. Just don't make any bad placements and you should be OK. Here are some pointers just in case:

1) Try to string some combos. If you place a set of three, which then makes another block fall to create another set of three, your score will increase a lot faster.

2) When the blocks are falling fast, try not to panic too much. If you keep cool and keep making placements correctly, the blocks will start to slow down again. Though rewind can help you take some of that pressure off if you need it.
The Eagle has Landed

Shining Force - Make it to Alterone

For this achievement you need to get your party to Alterone. However there is the challenge 'Stay with Me!' which when completed should unlock this achievement. While some players may have got the achievement by doing this, some of us haven't.

So you may need to do both the challenge, as well as playing the game itself. Either way, if you need advice on getting this achievement, during the battle to Alterone, please check the challenge 'Stay with Me!' for advice.

However there is some advice I can give to you, if you need to get the achievement through the game rather than by the challenge route.

I have been informed by Atari that you can get this achievement in a matter of two minutes. So go through the game as normal (use fast-forward as this will get to areas you need to a lot faster) and when you leave home, you are shipped to the first battle. What you can do is get your main hero to leave the area by walk south or using Egress. You will be asked if you wish to retreat. Say yes and you will be able to get to the main world map. Just walk to Alterone from there.

I also have a map which will be useful when trying to get this achievement (Alterone is the city north of the map):

Experiencing History

Play 20 Games

So this is easy, just play 20 different games. For this you can just load up the game and then exit. Each time you do this, it will add one to the total of different games you have played. But there is a good chance you will get this while trying to complete the other achievements and challenges this game has to offer.
Clean Sweep

All Challenges Complete

So to complete these challenges you have to do one of two things:

1) Go to the game which has the challenge and check on the extras menu.

2) Go to the extras on the far left of the room and click on Challenges.

For this achievement you need to complete all of the challenges the game has to offer. If you need any advice on any of these challenges, check the challenges at the bottom of this guide.
All the Magics
All the Magics
Golden Axe Games - Collect 200 magic

So in the Golden Axe games you will need to collect blue Magic Pots or blue Magic Books to increase your spells. However for this achievment, you will need to collect up to 200 Magic. Just be ready to grind when you go for this achievement.

But thanks to some advice from Foxysen, the grind may not be so bad. There was something wrong with this achievement that meant the magic count decreases when you use it and so you had to avoid using magic, however as pointed out by Foxysen, this is now been fixed, so you can just play the game if you wish to. But if you wish for less of a grind check these pictures I took of my save file (both from the first game):

These gnomes have three magic bottles and it's at the start of the game. So now all I have to do is attack them, reload this file and repeat. This will still keep adding up the total needed to get this achievement.

Another area which was advised to me by Foxysen was this level. Even on Beginner Mode you can get to this area and get up to 5 magic bottles per reload. I will also add that Tyris Flare (the woman in red) has the largest magic bar in this and the second game, so you may want to use her instead.

Oshiokiyo! has also mentioned that you can rewind the game to add to your magic counter. So as you pick up a magic potion or book, rewind and pick it up again and repeat. I believe this has happen because of the latest update, but even if that isn't the case, you have another way of getting this achievement a lot faster.

Good Job
Good Job
Streets of Rage 3 - Finish the game on Normal or Hard difficulty

OK so this can be one of the tougher achievements to obtain, especially if not used to the game. So unlike 'Sore Knuckles' you can't go on Easy mode, as Easy mode hasn't got all the levels you need to play to complete this game (like Beginner Mode on Golden Axe) .

So you could go through the game on Normal/Hard and keep practicing until you have got used to the game. Though I will add that you do have the rewind button, so if things go south, just rewind and try until you get it right... or at least better than before. UPDATE: I have been informed by Vito that after completing the game on Normal mode, the achievement didn't unlock (even though the achievement details say Normal or Hard mode). So if you do complete the game on Normal and it doesn't unlock this achievement, you may have to play the game on Hard mode.

However you can make it easier for yourself, just like with 'Sore Knuckles' and go to the level you wish to go. If want to know how to do so, read on:

So first go to the Main Menu (the one with 1 player, 2 player, options). Hold down B and move up to options. When you reach options, keep 'up' held up and press START. You will hear a different chime rather than the select chime. You can now select which level to start from. You will want to start from 6, however this isn't the final level, you understand why later on.

You can also have more extra lives. Again it's just below if you wish to use it:

If you have a second controller you can hold down A,B,C and up (check what you have assigned for A,B,C) while highlighting the 'Number of Players' in the options. While you are doing that, use the first controller to move right. You should be able to move it up to 9.

Now whether or not you want to take the advice above is up to you. However, I do have a video of a speedrun of this game: (Link if you can't play youtube on steam: Street Of Rage 3 Speedrun)

Also level 6, this is the quickest route to get through the level:

Destory robots, move to lift. Go down two levels, beat the enemies in that area. Go into the middle door (2). Beat the enemies in that room, as well as the switch on the far right. Leave the room, beat the enemies outside the area. Go back to lift and go up once. Again clear that area, go into the middle door (2). Again clear the room and the switch. As you leave, beat the enemies outside and move right, you will see the hostage you need to rescue (that is if he is still alive).

As a final note, I will say that I don't think the ending or difficulty you get will affect if you get this achievement or not. When I completed this, I was able to rescue the hostage, but I failed to finish the final boss in time. Even so, I got the achievement. T-Rader mentioned that you can use the level cheat with the 'Easy' difficulty (normally it would end on level 5, but with the level skip... well it skips it) and it will unlock it, just like it does on PlayStation version of the game.

Demonstrate Restraint
Demonstrate Restraint
Shadow Dancer - Complete the first two stages without using magic

This isn't that hard, just complete the first two stages and don't press the ninjutsu button. A few things to bear in mind with this game:

1) If the enemy hits you, you're dead. So don't rush it.

2) The attack button will throw a shuriken (unless you are playing the non-shuriken mode) at range, but get close to a enemy and the attack will be by a sword (which is handy in certain places). Holding the attack button down will make you pet dog attack.

3) If you want to move up or down, you have to jump and hold the up/down button, you can't just jump up.

4) And save those people. You have to get them to exit the level.
One in Three
One in Three
Alex Kidd - Win 50 Games of Rock, Paper, Scissors

So in this game you will have to play a mini-game Rock, Paper, Scissors. You just have to win 50 of those games.

Now if you are the few who doesn't know how this game works, it's simple:

Rock beats Scissors
Scissors beats Paper
Paper beats Rock

Foxysen has pointed that you could get these games finished quickly by using the reload or rewind. Either way the wins will add up.
Sore Knuckles
Sore Knuckles
Streets of Rage - Get to the final boss without using a continue

So you have two choices:

1) Play through the game and reach the level 8 Boss without using a continue. This will mean you will have to play carefully, using items and food when you need it the most. As a warning, if you play on one player mode bosses will become much harder by level 5, which makes this achievement a hard one to obtain. However bear in mind that you can use the re-wind button if things don't go your way. So if, for example, you just miss eating that turkey that could have saved your life, rewind and try again.

Foxysen has pointed out that players can do this on Easy mode. So if you can't use the second method or wish to get the achievement fairly then it possible to make it easier for yourself.

2) You can... cheat to get the achievement. Here's how to do it:

OK so for this you will need to have two players (so two controllers). On the main menu (where it says 1 player, 2 player, options), on the player 2 controller hold down A, B, C and right (check what you have assigned as A, B and C).

While holding them down, on the player 1 controller, go to the options. You will be able to select the level 8 and change how many lives you have. However what's funny is that when you select 1 player/ 2 players mode, the achievement will pop up straight away without playing the game.
Keep your powder dry
Keep your powder dry
Shinobi 3 - Get a Shinobi bonus (complete a level without throwing a shuriken)

Just like with the Demonstrate Restraint achievement (Shadow Dancer), the attack button will attack with a sword (or dagger in this game) or throw a shuriken. However because of that, it makes this achievement a lot more harder. But I do have some pointers which can make this achievement a bit easier:

1) Before you start the game, go to the options. Make the game Easy and change the shuriken to 00. This way you can make this run without worrying about using the attack button (if you have no shurikens, you will always use a sword attack, which is ok for this achievement).

2) Try to not open the crates in the game. Sure they could have health in them, but you also have the chance of picking up a number of shurikens, which isn't something you don't want for this run.

3) Learn this move Jump, then Attack and hold down. If you are doing this right, you should do a flying kick. What makes this move great is that, it will take most minions down right away, you move through the level really fast and you can combo it, meaning you can get a string of attacks, which in turn moves you faster through that level.

4) Press the pause menu. You will be able to choose a Ninjatsu. Now if you find these types games hard, I would recommend the Jitsu of Mijin. Why would you want an attack which makes you lose a life you ask? Simple, if you are at the boss and your health is low, you can use this Ninjatsu which will not only damage the boss, but it will put you to full health, rather than relying on restarting the boss or using the reload/rewind numerous times.

5) Speaking of bosses, when fighting the final boss on the first level, you can use the flying kick combo to beat this boss with ease. Just combo 3 flying kicks, this will damage the boss. When he charges, jump over him. Repeat until you defeat the boss.

If you have done this right, you will have a Shinobi bonus at the end of the level, as well as this achievement. However bear in mind, you don't have to do this on the first level, it's only just a recommendation.
Challenge X

Complete 10 Challenges

So to complete these challenges you have to do one of two things:

1) Go to the game which has the challenge and check on the extras menu.

2) Go to the extras on the far left of the room and click on Challenges.

For this achievement you need to complete 10 of the challenges the game has to offer. If you need any advice on any of these challenges, check the challenges at the bottom of this guide.

So to complete these challenges you have to do one of two things:

1) Go to the game which has the challenge and check on the extras menu.

2) Go to the extras on the far left of the room and click on Challenges.

Extra Hedgehogs
Extra Hedgehogs
Sonic 2 - Finish Emerald Hills with 5 Lives

Any Sonic fan will find this to be very easy. However if you are not one of those people, I can give you some helpful advice.

1) You will get a extra life when you collect 100 Rings, so collecting those Rings is the easiest way to complete this challenge (not the fastest however).

2) If you collect 50 Rings, you can go to Special Zone when you hit a Star Post. However for this challenge IGNORE going to the Special Zone. I say this because if you enter it, you will lose all of your Rings as you are leaving the Special Zone. You will be needing those Rings for this challenge.

3) Here is a link to a website which has the layout of the two Emerald Hill Zones: Maps[info.sonicretro.org]

If you check the two maps and remember the layout, you could just find the boxes which have an extra life in them (the ones with Sonic's face) without worrying about collecting lots of Rings and trying to avoid damage.

4) ThunderCodes has mentioned you can use the Debug Mode to get this achievement. So you could play around with that to get the extra lives you need for this achievement.

Commitment
Commitment
Sonic The Hedgehog - Collect all 6 Chaos Emeralds

So for the hardcore Sonic fans who are amazing at these games, this shouldn't be too hard. However that said, even though I have played this game numerous times, it's amazing how many times I mess up (and I was playing this game back when it was released). So if you are like me or even worst, here are some pointers:

1) First the rewind button, make it your friend. There are so many things that can go wrong when going for this achievement. You lose Rings, you fail to hit the giant ring at the end of the stage, you get to the Special Stage and you hit that annoying GOAL. These are the moments you can just use rewind after you made those mistakes. So if you lose rings, rewind it. If you miss the Giant Ring, rewind it. If hit the GOAL, rewind it. And of course save it when you get the Chaos Emerald.

Something else to bear in mind is that you cannot enter a Giant Ring on any of the Act 3 of that zone, as they have a boss. Secondly, there are no Giant Rings on any of the Scrap Brain Zone levels. This means, you only have 10 chances to get all 6 Chaos Emeralds. So by rewinding and saving as you go, it means you are also helping yourself, without the need to restart right back at the beginning.

2) At the end of the stage you will need to look out for this:

You will need 50 Rings (as mentioned before) and as you get to the end of the level, you will need to jump into the ring. This will take you to the Special Stage where one of the six Chaos Emeralds will be.

However as you past the signpost, you will lose control of Sonic, so you need to jump before you past the signpost. If you time it right, you will hit it. If you miss, rewind it.

3) In the Special Stage you will need to move around a maze to reach the Chaos Emerald. However the maze is also moving around clockwise, which can make some players get really annoyed with these types of levels. But as you go around the maze you will see some words/symbols, this what they mean:

  • UP - This will speed up the rotation of the maze.
  • DOWN - This will slow down the rotation of the maze.
  • R - This will change the rotation from clockwise to anti-clockwise or vice versa.
  • GOAL - AVOID THIS! This will kick you out of the level without the Chaos Emerald.
  • Red Circle with Yellow Star - This is a Bumper. You hit, you will bounce off it. It can be both useful and annoying.
  • Faded Red & White Circle - You should aim to go through these circles. When you do, they become solid. These guide you to the Chaos Emerald.

As you get closer to the end of the stage, you should see a Chaos Emerald, as well as some diamonds around it. To get to the Chaos Emerald, you will need to land onto those diamonds. When you do, you will hear a soft clinking sound. This means the diamonds are fading away. When they do, you should be able to reach the Chaos Emerald, however do bear in mind, this can be tricky to do on later levels.

ThunderCodes has also pointed out you can use the Debug Mode to get this achievement, if you wish to use that method to get this achievement. This is helpful to those who really don't like the special stages or if you want to get the achievement just that bit faster.

There has been a change recently for getting this achievement when it comes to the simple launcher. Before togepi1234 was playing this game using the simple launcher and was able to use the save file on the normal launcher to get the achievement. However Randalf has mentioned that he used this technique and it didn't work. This is because the launchers now use different emulators meaning that the save file is linked to that emulator you use.

Dance the Robo
Dance the Robo
Dynamite Headdy - Defeat the Robo Collector

So for this you will be playing on the very first level and this is the first enemy you encounter, which is very handy for this achievement. While you are running, you will see the Robo Collector trying to capture the others running alongside you. As the Robo does this, you will need to keep attacking until he is defeated. Also, this Robo cannot hurt you or capture you, so you don't even have to play this safe, just spam those attacks.

However if you take too long, the Robo will take the others away and you will miss your chance to get this achievement. If this does happen, just restart the game.
Fly you Fools!
Fly you Fools!
Golden Axe 2- Kill 25 enemies by throwing/knocking them off the environment in a single play through

So for this achievement will need to knock off 25 enemies out the stage. Now before I mentioned that you couldn't rewind the same fallen enemy, as this wouldn't count as different enemies. However Spoopums has mentioned they had someone walk off the stage and rewind that encounter 25 times and it worked. So try this technique first to see if you can unlock the achievement this way.

However this didn't work for you just start a new game (recommended to set Easy and 5 lives). Even if you were to finish the game and still needed this achievement, so long as you are playing the game or you are using a reloaded save file from before where you have already made those types of kills, these kills will still add up for that achievement you need.
500 Rings to Rule them All
500 Rings to Rule them All
Sonic Games - Get 500 rings

Even if you are new to the retro Sonic games, this shouldn't take too long. Just collect 500 Rings in Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 or 3. You may be able to get this while trying to get the 'Extra Hedgehogs' achievement.

ThunderCodes however has corrected me on something. My understanding was that the rings in Sonic 3D would count to the total, but as it turns out it doesn't. So because of that, I have only listed the first 3 Sonic games, as they should add to the total number of Rings you collect. Though it has been pointed out by ThunderCodes you can use the Debug Mode to get this achievement, so there is always that too.
Spin for the Win
Spin for the Win
Sonic Spinball - Collect all 3 Chaos Emeralds

OK so I'm not going to lie, this is going to be harder for me than it is for you. While it's true you can get lost in this level (and trust me I can understand why), once you know what you are doing, it isn't that hard to achieve. But explaining can be hard, so get yourself a snack or drink while I explain what you need to do.

So the first task for this level is to empty the green toxic, which also has the Chaos Emerald in it. There are two switches you need to hit to empty the liquid. As you can see I hit the button where it says score. Then go to the other side and hit that switch. When you do that, you should see the liquid being emptied.

This will now open the two safety valves that were closed.

Go up one of the tubes (which are now open) and when you enter that area, try to slow down and land in the barrel that is in that green toxic slime. When you are in the barrel, go right if you are on the left side and vice versa. You should then be able to grab the Chaos Emerald.

Onto to the next two Chaos Emeralds. For this I will be explaining what you need to do as if you were on the left hand side of the board. This can also apply to the right hand side, all you need to do is change left to right and right to left.

So when you enter the left side of the map, you will need to pull this red & white switch:

If you are finding it hard to get to that area, try and follow that dotted line:

Once you have done that, you will need to get here:

For this you have two options:

Option 1

You can go up the tube on the left side of the board and hit the barrels blocking that area. If you do this 3 times, the tube becomes empty, allowing you to get to the top. Once you get to the top, jump over the fence.

Option 2

If you use the flippers and try to aim for the middle of the room, you can get to an arch which will have two worms blocking both ways in when you enter it. If you this 3 times, you will open the fence on the right side of the arch.

Now back to this area:

You will now want to go up the tube on the right. When you enter it, you will get to the boss area. But don't worry you need three Chaos Emeralds to fight this boss (we won't need to fight the boss for this achievement, just in case you were wondering). You will then fall onto a cart. Now because we pulled that red & white switch, the track to the Chaos Emerald is open. To get to it you need go right and as you follow the track you will reach the Chaos Emerald.

Now that you have done the left hand side, move to the right hand side of the board. And when you grab the third Chaos Emerald you will get this achievement.
Chillin' out Maxin'
Chillin' out Maxin'
Toejam and Earl - Dance the Hula

So this is more based on RNG, but shouldn't be too hard to get. When playing if you see a hula girl dancing, walk up to her and you will start dancing. You will also get this achievement.

However the hula girl at the Secret Island can't be danced too. You have to find a hula girl which is in the same area as the enemies are.
Power Through
Power Through
Space Harrier 2 - Reach a Score of 5,000,000

So this isn't a hard achievement to get if you are really good at this game, or if you rely heavily on the rewind button. If you get hit, rewind and move yourself out of the way of that attack, enemy or object.

To get this score you will most likely have to play through 4 levels, as well as a special stage which is where you will get most of your points from.

As a side note, Teague Vox mentioned to me the way this game is scored. The game's score is increased as you stay alive in the game. So if you really don't like using the rewind button often, you can just circle around the stage, which will avoid most of the shots taken at you.
What are the Buttons?
What are the Buttons?
Golden Axe - Use Magic When No Enemies are Present

So this is very easy. Just start a game, choose a character and when the game text has finished, just press the magic button.
Multitool
Multitool
Alien Soldier - Use 4 Different Weapon Modes in one Session

Again this is very easy. As you start the game you have to select 4 different weapons for your character to use. Select 4 different weapons and when you start the game just use a weapon. Switch it and use the next one. Repeat this until you unlock the achievement.
Relaxin' all cool
Relaxin' all cool
Toejam and Earl - Find the Secret Island

Ok so this isn't not too bad, but you will need one of the following items.

Inner tube (or a rubber dinghy)

If you want a certain location for this item, you will need to play on the fixed map. As Foxysen has pointed out to me, if you play a normal game, everything is random, from maps to present's locations and even what is in those presents.

But if you play on the fixed world you will find this item on the 3rd floor, just under the mailbox.

Rocket Skates

So Foxysen mentioned this one. These skates can travel across water and at a very high speed. On the fixed world, it's on the third floor. When you enter it, go up and you will see a hula girl. Just go right from there and you will find these skates.

Icarus Wings

You can also use the Icarus Wings, which can make you fly for some time. To find these wings just check the map. On the fixed world this is on the 5th floor.

Now when you get one of these items, just quick save and check it's the right one and head back to the first floor, by falling off the edge of the map. When you do, you will head to this area:

You will see where you need to go, so before you start swimming, guiding or flying, use the item on the corner on the starting island and head to the location. As you get to the area, you will see a hole in the middle of the island. Just jump down into the area and you will get the achievment.

Golden Axe 3 - Max out your magic

Not too hard. Just need to fill up you magic meter. In this game, all the characters have the same size magic meter, so choice of character isn't a major factor for this achievement. If you don't use the first bottle, you just need to get 5 magic bottles to get this filled up.

Challenges

So to complete these challenges you have to do one of two things:

1) Go to the game which has the challenge and check on the extras menu.

2) Go to the extras on the far left of the room and click on Challenges.

For these challenges you will not be able to use the rewind button, so you will have to play the game the way it was intended too. If you need any advice on any of these challenges, just check the challenges below.
Giant Enemy Crab
Giant Enemy Crab
Game: Beyond Oasis
Defeat the Crab Nabber using just a dagger

When you see this for the first time, it can be a bit daunting, but it's not too bad of a challenge once you know a few things:

1) When you start, walk up to the Crab and start spam the attack button. You should be able to get rid of a good amount of its health that way.

2) Try to go to the bottom of the screen and when the Crab jumps towards you, try to get behind it and start attacking it's back. When you do, it will jump again, so again move back and when it lands, start the backstabbing again.

3) However at half health this boss will not be as jumpy, but you will need to do a lot of dodging from both the claw and the bubbles. As soon as he jumps, work out where it will land and postition yourself at it's mouth. When it lands you should be able to get a attack or two in before you need to dodge again. Once you have done that, try to aim for the back again, until the Crab start using it's claw and bubbles again.

4) You will mostly likely take a lot of damage in this challenge. However on the pause menu, you will have some food you can use to heal yourself up. Just eat some food if you need too.

Game: Columns
Start using this mid-game save, get to a score of 5000

So for this challenge you will have a game board set up. You just need to get the score to be 5000 or more. Just take your time and this shouldn't be too hard, even if it takes a few times. Here are some pointers:

1) Try to string some combos. If you place a set of three, which then makes another block fall to create another set of three, your score will increase a lot faster.

2) When the blocks are falling fast try not to panic too much. If you keep cool and keep making placements correctly, the blocks will start to slow down again.
Epic Comeback
Epic Comeback
Game: Comix Zone
Win the Kung Fung Tournament, but your health bar is looking low

Ok so this my sound like bad advice for this challenge but here it goes... just spam those attacks. I know what you thinking: 'That's all?'

While it sounds odd, you can easily get through this by punching or kicking at your enemies. So if you keep punching and you see your enemy is blocking, duck and start kicking. Mix it up as well if you need to.

The only things you need to watch out for it at the start you will have two enemies, which mean you have to split your focus on both enemies, as well as the fighter with the pole. If you see him jump onto his pole and starts hopping, use an air kick to bring him back down.

Also, if you knockback an enemy, chase them and continue the attacks. And look out for Mortus' hand drawing the enemies, this helps so you can be in the right place to start your attacks.

Game: Crackdown
Finish Stage 1 Act 3 with at least 1:50 left

So here's the map:

The red dots are where you need to place the mines. Those two red circles I have drawn on, that's your exit.

In this challenge you have 7 lives (which is very handy I will add), so don't worry too much if you get shot. You just need to be quick and when you get to the red mark, the mine will be placed automatic (you will see a picture of the mine with the time left, again very handy for this challenge). Place the 3 mines and then just leg it out of there.

You start the challenge with the timer at 2:58, which means you have to complete this level within 1 minute and 8 seconds.
Tough Nut
Tough Nut
Game: Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Starting in the middle of a game, get a score of at least 4000

So for this challenge you will be playing Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (or Puyo Puyo with characters from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog... yes I know stuff).

You just need to get a score of 4000 or more. However be careful, if you play too well, you can beat Humpty (your opponent) before you get a score of 4000 or more.

So try to play a bit more careful. If Humpty's board is empty, try to get some combos. If Humpty's board is getting full, try to match three but no more. That way if Humpty's board gets clearer, you can try to hit a big combo, which will in turn get you a score to complete this challenge.
Tricky Flicky
Tricky Flicky
Game: Flicky
Complete Round 10 in under 2 minutes

This isn't too challenging if you plan a route, however you only have 2 lives, so you will need to be somewhat careful.

First start from the top and grab the yellow Chirps (the chicks) that are flying and work down until you have all of them. Don't worry if a cat gets you, the Chirps will go to the bottom as a retreat.

Once you have all of them, continue to run right. The reason for this is because this is the way the cats move in this level. If you run the same way as the cat, the cat can't get you, unless you run into it. From there work back up, while continuing to move right and aim for the exit.

For this challenge focus on staying alive rather than rush for time. You've got 2 minutes which is plenty of time to gather those Chirps.
Duel Purpose
Duel Purpose
Game: Golden Axe
Take on level 8 Duel and win as Gilius Thunderhead, but your health is low

This is a tricky one. The object for this challenge is to try and create a pattern which will make the two skeletons unable to land an attack on you. If you don't, you will get attacked from the one skeleton and that's when the trouble starts. So here advice for three different techniques you can use:

Technique 1- Keep Swinging the Axe

1) If you tap right twice you will run. If you press the attack button, Gilius will charge himself into the enemy (which I will add is really fun). However for this challenge if you do this attack to left skeleton, as that skeleton flies to the right, you can attack the right skeleton that is up. If you attack that skeleton, he will fly to the right as well. All you now have to do is make sure they don't pass you.

2) Try to keep them together. If you land your attacks when both are in the same place, you will attack them both.

3) See if you can keep a bit of a distance. If you do this right, you will find that Gilius will swing his axe twice and then go back to swinging his axe rather than kicking the skeletons. This is helpful because you can combo the attack and the skeletons will not be able to do anything.

Technique 2- Jump & Axe

1) As the game starts, one skeleton will charge at you. At that moment and swing your axe as you are in the air.

2) At this moment, the other skeleton will try to attack you. You just need to jump and swing that axe.

3) As that skeleton falls, the first will get up. Jump and axe that skeleton. You will now have a pattern, you jump and attack the skeleton that is up, while the other skeleton will be on the ground readying itself to get back up. Just keep doing step 3, and in no time both skeletons will be down.

I will add that this may take a good number of times before you get it right, but if you follow the advice you should be able to get it in time. If not well...

Techinique 3- Divide and Conquer

Oshiokiyo! has another way of doing this challenge if the other two techniques don't work out.

1) First you get one skeleton to the far left corner of the map and the other skeleton to the far right corner of the map.

2) As the skeleton runs to you, charge and attack (like I refered to in the first technique). As that skeleton falls the other one will be charging at you. Again charge and attack.

3) You should now have a pattern where you are charging an attack on the one skeleton, as the other one will be readying itself to attack again. So long as you keep the two skeletons away from each other, you should be OK.

Game: Golden Axe II
Defeat the second boss while playing as Ax Battler, but using no magic or continues

This one is annoying. So you have no magic, 4 health and only 1 life. Oh and you have 3 enemies to deal with... great...

So for this challenge, you will need to be moving a lot, as well as juggling between enemies. So here are some pointers:

1) The moment you enter the challenge, jump right and start swinging that sword. If you don't move quick, the left skeleton will attack you and if you don't attack when jumping right, you get attacked by the right skeleton.

2) Now you will notice that the skeletons move a bit faster than the armoured boss. Because of this we'll want to move up screen, so the skeletons will chase you. When they do, use that moment to juggle between the two skeletons. However you don't want to combo the attacks, because if you do the other skeleton will attack you.

3) Bear in mind that the armoured boss, will be moving towards too, if it gets too close move down screen and repeat step 2.

4) Once you have beaten both skeletons, you will need to worry about the boss. For this boss you have to bear one thing in mind, he will attack with the sword if it is in line with you. Because of this, you will want to jump attack him while you are slightly above the boss. And the best thing about this trick is that if you time it right, you will make him fly to the other side of the screen, but if you are off a little bit, there is a chance you can pull a combo on the boss, which means more damage.

Also if you are going up and you reach the top, head back down and as the boss walks down and gets close to you, go back up again.

However even though I have completed this challenge I will say that even using this tactic could take a good number of tries before it will work.

As a side note, Shirohige.HD mentioned that he managed to get an extra continue by "smashing buttons" before the challenge fail screen showed. I have tried to see I could pull it off and... I couldn't repeat the result. However mom0n told me what to do. When your health reaches zero, there will be a few seconds (about 3 seconds) before you will go back to the challenge screen. Do not spam press Start, because that will just Pause-Unpause the game and the timer will still count even on pause. Instead, wait for the message "Press Start to Continue" on the lower left corner of the screen. Press Start immediately once you see it. Doing this should restore your lives and health.
Bullheaded
Bullheaded
Game: Golden Axe III
Beat the 2 Minotaurs without using a continue

So for this challenge you have to bear a few things in mind:

1) Don't try to knock them off the arena, this just doesn't work at all.

2) You will have some magic for this challenge. Make sure to use it, as this will help you to defeat them.

3) Don't let the Minotaurs near you. When you attack, always make sure there is some space between you and them, as you have a larger reach to attack them, unlike the Minotaurs.

4) Try to keep both Minotaurs on the same side. If they are on opposite sides, you will be juggling between the two of them, which makes things a lot harder.

As a side note sonikku2008 has found a glitch in this game where you can remove one of the minotaur from the start. To do this as you load up the challange, spam that magic button until the spell begins to cast. Now as the spell finishes and the minotaur on the right is about to hit the ground, press the magic button again.

And on that note, Teratus also mentioned that if you time your magic correctly so that the one on the right gets hit a 3rd time while he is off screen. This makes the second one disappear as well.

So if you are having trouble dealing with two minotaurs, use these tactics to make the challenge easier.
Rising Above
Rising Above
Game: Ristar
Complete Planet Flora round 1 without taking damage

So this can be annoying to complete, but it can be done fairly easily. Here's some pointers:

1) First if you see a bush, be very wary. They will either have a rabbit or explosive nuts (I think that's what they are). If either of them hit you, you will lose this challenge.

2) When you reach the dandelion field, try to go up rather than down. The top route is safer than the bottom route.

3) When you get to the boss, it will poke its head out before it will move. This is when you will need to attack it. However if it moves up, be careful not to hit it as you climb up the vines.
A dog is for life
A dog is for life
Game: Shadow Dancer
Complete Stage 1-2 with a dog in its puppy state

So for this challenge you have to finish the level while your pet dog is a puppy. So go through the level, rescue the hostages until you get near the end. You want to clear the screen of enemies, so that you only have the green shield minion left. On the second floor, charge your dog attack (hold down the attack button) and then drop down. As you land, release the dog.

If you have done this right the dog will start attacking that minion. Sadly as much as you want to help the dog, you have to let the minion attack the dog. This will cause the dog to become a puppy.

However before you leave the stage, give yourself a few seconds. If the puppy changes back into a dog, attack the minion again as before. If nothing happens and your puppy stays cute, leave the stage and you will get this challenge completed.

Game: Shining Force
Make it Alterone with no more than 1 team member dying in battle

For this challenge you are not to lose more than 1 team member. However there is another problem which isn't said. If your hero dies, you will fail this challenge as well.

So let's look at your team:

  • Delphi (Hero) - 14HP, 9MP, Attack 17, Defense 7, Move 6, Agility 6. He has a Sword and 2 Herbs. Can cast Egress.
  • Mae (Knight) - 12HP, 0MP, Attack 14, Defense 7, Move 7, Agility 7. She has a Bronze Lance.
  • Ken (Knight) - 15HP, 0MP, Attack 15, Defense 6, Move 7, Agility 6. He has a Spear and 2 Herbs.
  • Gort (Warrior) - 13HP, 0MP, Attack 15, Defense 9, Move 6, Agility 4. He has a Hand Axe and 3 Herbs.
  • Luke (Warrior) - 12HP, 0MP, Attack 15, Defense 8, Move 6, Agility 5. He has a Short Sword and 2 Herbs.
  • Tao (Mage) - 10HP, 7MP, Attack 8, Defense 4, Move 5, Agility 6. She has a Staff and two Herbs. Can cast Blaze.
  • Lowe (Healer) - 11HP, 11MP, Attack 10, Defense 5, Move 5, Agility 5. He has a Staff and 1 Herb. Can cast Heal.
  • Hans (Archer) - 14HP, 0MP, Attack 14, Defense 5, Move 5, Agility 7. He has a Wooden Arrows and two Herbs.

Ok so let's break this down. Your Hero, Knights and Warriors will be the ones who will be taking damage, but they are also the ones who will be kicking out that damage too. You will also notice that Ken can also make range attacks because he is using a Spear. As for Delphi's Egress, you can use it if you get into a lot of trouble. Sure it will reset the battle, but you will be able to keep the experience you gain, so that is an option if you don't wish to start back on square one. Plus you can top up on herbs if you need them.

Hans is OK, not great but can be very useful for clearing up enemies with 4-6HP left.

Tao isn't that good. Sure she can use Blaze which will help you, but as soon as you use 3 Blazes, she isn't going to help for the rest of battle.

Lowe can heal 3 times and that's it. Unless an enemy has 2HP left and with no other dangers nearby, Lowe isn't going to a lot of good. So keep him away from your enemies.

Black Drazon had pointed out that for this challenge everyone in your party will have a least one healing herb (though Mae doesn't have one, but still this very helpful). So when we're in battle there will always be someone who can heal those who need it.

However before you start the battle, Foxysen has raised up a good idea for this challenge. You can go back to the home town (this is done by moving the main hero Delphi to the castle). This way you can stock up on healing herbs, making it even easier for you to complete this challenge.

You can also get some items if you head for the north of home town, this is where the castle is. If you go to the far top left corner, you can open some chests. As you enter, you can get the following which can be useful for this challenge:

Left Chests: Top chest- Power Potion (Increases Attack of group member), Middle chest - 50 Gold
Right Chests: Top chest- Defense Potion (Increase Defense of group member), Bottom chest- Herb

So what are you to do in battle? Well let's me show you my MS Paint plan:

Ok so here's the plan:

At Point 1 we have 2 bats. These bats will deal a fair amount of damage, but they also put your group members to sleep. Now those bats will move straight away, so get two of your group to deal with that problem.

At Point 2 we have 5 dwarfs. This dwarfs are fairly easy to deal with, but you don't want all of them at the same time. Your plan for these enemies is to draw them to you, so either use a Knight, Warrior or your Hero to draw those dwarfs towards you. As you get one or two of them near to you, deal with them and then draw the next lot of dwarfs.

Both Point 1 & 2 should be done at the same time, as this will keep the squishy members of your team safe. If you have any serious injuries at this point, use those herbs or Lowe to heal.

Now for point 3. We have 3 bats in the mountains. When we head to them we want to draw them, but without drawing attention from the group of Rune Knights to the right. So move your team to the left and head for the bats. Once the bats head to you, deal with them and heal up if needed.

And finally point 4. At this location we have 5 Rune Knights. We now move the group to the east, but very slowly. You plan is the same as the dwarfs, we want to draw one or two of them, not all of them. Once they start attacking, deal with them, but be careful. As you attack, the others in the group will most likely move towards you, so you need to finish the first wave before the second wave arrives. However be careful in this battle, sometimes these enemies can land 2 attacks, which will cause some serious damage to your team, so get ready to heal them when needed.

If you do this right, you should be able to do this without losing a single person. However there is also another option you have if you wish to use it. Black Drazon has mentioned it's possible to win by moving Delphi to Alterone while the battle is still ongoing. For this you would need to place Delphi south of Point 4 and while you use the army to draw the Rune Knights away from Alterone, you can take that moment to send Delphi to Alterone. As that hero gets to Alterone, you will have completed this challenge.

Foxysen has also mentioned that if you complete this challenge it will unlock the achievement: 'The Eagle has Landed'. However I will add when I did this, it didn't unlock, so you may need to play the game again to get this achievement (which is explained in the upper part of this guide).

Game: Sonic the Hedgehog
Complete Green Hill Zone Act 2 in mirror mode in under 1 minute

Now this is a very interesting challenge. You will be playing Sonic 1 Green Hill Zone Act 2, but instead you will be going from the right to the left. If you are unsure how to proceed, here's a map of that level:

Sonic 1 Green Hill Act 2[info.sonicretro.org]

Remember even though the level you play goes right to left, unlike the map that goes left to right, you can still use this map to plan ahead if needed. The level is mirrored, so you will see the objects and items as if you were going from left to right.
Dodge This
Dodge This
Game: Space Harrier II
Complete Stage 1 without losing a life

For this challenge you will either have to do a lot of dodging, a lot of shooting, or a mix of both. There are so many things that can make you lose a life. Here's what to look out for:

1) The ships will fire a blue circle at your postion. So bear in mind where you have been and move elsewhere on the screen. However as the ships get too close, they can kill you if they charge into you.

2) Look out for the trees and bushes. Hitting one of them will make you lose the challenge. Because of this you may want to stay near the top of the screen, rather than the bottom of the screen.

3) When you see the green dragon (though it could be a wyvern), you can choose to attack it or ignore it. Either way just be sure to dodge its attacks.

However for the most part, it's about learning where the ships come and go from. Once you have learnt that, you should be able to get to the boss, though it may take a good number of attempts.

As for the turtle boss when it's shooting, just move around the screen in a circular motion. When he heads for you, just shoot at the heads. Once all three heads are gone, you will have completed this challenge.
Eating Turkey
Eating Turkey
Game: Streets of Rage
Finish Stage 1 with a full health bar of health

For this challenge it's not about trying to avoid damage (though that does help a lot) it all about finishing the level with full health. For this challenge, you can go through the level as you normally would. However don't use your special attack and when you see that sweet turkey, don't gobble it just yet. When you clear all the enemies, you will hear the boss music.

Foxysen has an idea for this challenge, which works well. You beat the boss until his health bar is halfway, eat the turkey and then call the police. However let's say you lose a lot of health and you can't risk attacking the boss. I was in this position and I have an idea if it comes to that. Let's look at the picture:

You will have seen I have taken a lot of damage, but on the plus side the boss is at 2/3 health. This is the moment you want to call the police. When they nuke the area, the boss will fall. This is your moment to eat that turkey. The boss should then throw the sword at you. Dodge it and when you do, finish him off.

Either way, at least you have a few different ways to complete this challenge. So try to get boss down to half health. If you feel you can't do this, aim for 2/3 and counter-attack him. If you have done this right, you will see the score screen, followed by challenge complete screen.

On a side note, I did try to see if I could bring in a player two, so I could use the police twice. However for this challenge it blocks off the ability to bring in a player two, so that won't work just as a heads up.
Unlearn Everything
Unlearn Everything
Game: Streets of Rage II
Complete Stage 2 without picking up any items

OK this is one of those challenges which sounds easy, but if you are not careful, you can make it harder on yourself (also bear in mind you only have two lives). It's very easy to accidently pick up an item when you wanted to attack an enemy instead. So be wary of where those items are and try to fight back when you're not near those items.

For most of the level you can take you time. Try to avoid smash barrels, fly kick the bikers, try to focus on each minion one at a time and don't try to get into crowd fight if possible.

However I will add the boss at the end can be annoying because there are times you may feel you can't hit him. For this bear a few thoughts in mind:

1) If you can't land your attack, look where his shadow is on the ground and line up to him. This should work when attacking him.

2) If you see he is about to charge at you, use a flying kick. You will damage him and you avoid damage too.

3) Try to stay on the right hand side of the board, rather than the left. There are a few items that you can easily pick up if you are not careful.

This may take a few turns, but it's not too bad when you know what you are doing.
Why won't they just stand still?
Why won't they just stand still?
Game: Streets of Rage 3
Beat the Twin bosses at the end of Stage 2 with just 10% health remaining (or less)

OK if you are reading this on a new screen because you threw the controller at the old screen you used to have, I can understand why.

So here are some pointers, so you don't have to buy a new screen any time soon:

1) First you have two lives for this challenge, which means if you mess up the first life, you have a second chance. That said, you also have a turkey in the room, so don't be afraid if things don't start well. There is always a chance you can change things around.

2) To start off with you will need to pick a target and stick to that target until she is defeated. If you have a hard time trying to work out who is who, Mona is the one who does the range attack by punching the ground, while Lisa is the one who can do amazing air kicks if her sister helps her.

However it doesn't hurt to change the target now and then, but the idea for this challenge is to focus one of the twins so that it's easier to control the health of the other twin later on (though I say that very loosely).

3) When fighting try not throw the target over your shoulder, this will not damage them as they will flip midway and land on their feet. Also when the girls are jumping, the distance they 'arch' isn't that great. If you can be in the centre of the 'arch', you can attack them as they land on the other side.

4) Once one of the twins is down, this is the moment you fight back. However be careful you want to get the other twin down to a very low health, so that when you make you next attack it will end the battle.

It's now you have to let that twin beat up until you have 10% health. Now I know what you are thinking: 'Where is 10% on the health bar?' Well here's an image I have in which I compeleted this challenge.

As you can see if I take one more attack, Blaze is down and she is on her last life as well.

If you finish the battle and there is a slight pause before seeing the score screen, you have completed this challenge.

Complete the first level with just one health bar remaining

This isn't too difficult... more of an annoying task. So again attack at range is a shuriken, attack at close range is a dagger. What you need to do is play the game as well as you can. As you get to the end remove the samurai, so that you have only this minion left:

When this minion hits you, you lose 1 health bar. So just keep getting attacked until you have one health bar left. However when you get hit, you get knocked back, so move a bit closer if you need too, just not so close the minion jumps over you.

Game: Virtua Fighter 2
Take control of Kage-Maru and perform an epic comeback to win the fight

OK so this does sound a bit cheap, but you can just spam your punches for this challenge. However you will also need to duck your attacks as well as using the block button if you feel you get too many hits in. Just be wary of Pai Chan's attacks, as they will suck the health away from you very quickly.

If you do this right, you will either take all Pai's health from her or you will be able to hit her off the arena. Just do this twice and you will win this challenge.

I will also add that when you start the game, you can still win the fight with very low health. If you can do this, this will help you even more, as you would have more chances to win this fight.
Thanks!

Sorry for not getting back to both of you sooner.

Yes I have heard that you can do the 'Good job' achievement on Easy and I wasn't sure based on the wording on the achievement. I will be adding that.

As for 'Tricky Flicky', yes it's a challenge not an achievement. :lunar2019grinningpig:

I noticed that "Tricky Flicky" on this list isn't actually in my list of achievements. Was it removed at some point? It may not be the only missing one either, just the only one I see.

For the "Good Job" Achievement, I saw on a playstation trophy guide that using the level select cheat, you can select level 6 and play on "easy" (since normally this difficulty only allows normal play up to level 5). I did it to pop the trophy on Playstation and now the same trick worked here on Steam.

So I can only think of three things that could be the reason why it did trigger:

1) You have to play 20 base games, not including any modded games.
2) You using the simple launcher, which has caused a lot of problems when it come to unlock achievements
3) Lastly... it could be because what has happened to the game over the pass few years. With the Sonic games being removed from the collection, as well as the whole collection being removed from store on December 6th 2024, it could be that the ability to unlock achievements in these games have been affected by that removal.

Either way, if the first two ideas don't work, sad to say, then you may not be able to unlock them, unlike how they would when achievements were first put in. :csdmad:

So regarding that trick with the minotaurs.. you can make both of them disappear if you time your magic correctly so that the one on the right gets hit a 3rd time while he is off screen.
This makes the second one disappear as well making this challenge utterly effortless and beatable within seconds xD
