Friendlyism

Friendlyism, for eons, has been veiled in mystery. Questions have been asked, "What is a Friendly?" "Is that player a Friendly?" Friendlyism in recent times is also becoming more and more forgotten with the newer generations of TF2 players.

I have observed and partaken in Friendlyism for eight years and over 6,200 hours. I am here to share Friendlyism for higher understanding and enlightenment, especially for the newer generations who were not around during The Golden Community Server Era (Pre-Matchmaking).

What is Friendlyism?

Friendlyism Is An Inspiration

Those who partake in this art are inspired from videos such as the one to the left. They are players who, with great passion for the Team Fortress 2 community, have drawn inspiration from the shenanigans that have unfolded in various forms: SFM, gmod, visual artwork, fan comics, music remixes, and more.


Many Variations

On our lovable classes have been made and players who Friendly in-game may likely be attempting to assume the form of these zany fan creations, two popular ones being

And more types of Friendlyism may be expressed


T Posing (Civilian Pose) players




Players who crouch to signify Friendlyism



The classic "Need a Dispenser here!" or "That [class] is a Spy!" voice command spam >may< express Friendlyism



What is a Friendly?
There are three types of Friendly we may observe in the wilds of Team Fortress 2. The Genuine Friendly, The Unique Friendly, and The False Friendly. Study wisely the behavior of each for it will yield you the fruits of the wise player in these wild, strange lands.


Genuine Friendly

  • Has zero points on the scoreboard

  • Does not take sides of teams or give unfair advantages to various combatants
    - does not feed combatants
    - stays out of the way of combatants

  • Is likely a genuine hoovy
    - may be other classes

  • Is friendly in chat, voice, and game
    - never attacks anyone ever

  • Do Not Harm
    - there is no ethically conscious reason to attack a truly peaceful player encouraging a different kind of fun & positive atmosphere that is not inhibiting your gameplay


Unique Friendly
  • May have points on the scoreboard
    - has a history of kills, assist kills, team support

  • Displays neutral behavior by ceasing their combatant history
    - Has a non-Friendly history but they had a change of heart to become Friendly

  • Is friendly/neutral in chat, voice, game
    - May hit you if you hit them
    - May be defensive or baiting in chat

  • Approach With Caution
    - be prepared to defend yourself, keep an eye on them, passive target to harm or not harm


False Friendly
  • May have points or no points on the scoreboard
    - much likelier to have points

  • May have taken sides of teams and given unfair advantages to various combatants
    - much likelier to have a history of kills, assist kills, team support plays to give unfair advantages

  • Is a Spy or other unusual class to Friendly as
    - do not trust a Spy and always approach Spies with extreme caution; keep an eye on them
    - can be a False Hoovy

  • Is easily provoked & defensive in chat, voice, game
    - "You'd attack/kill a friendly??" "Stop killing me!!"
    - May display provocation in combative behavior (hitting you if you hit them by accident or intention)

  • Kill On Sight
    - bonus if you taunt after the kill to further expose them in provocation for the False Friendly and shame to Friendlyism they are
Where is Friendlyism found?


Golden Era Friendlyism (Pre-Meet Your Match Update)

Was observed in community servers as a beautiful party back during The Golden Age of Team Fortress 2

- Trade/Achievement Servers








Modern Friendlyism (Post- Meet Your Match Update)

Is observed in community servers still (namely LazyPurple's Silly Server), though in Matchmaking Mode (Valve Servers) as well

i know a partake if friendlyism as well and is one of the main reasons to play TF2 and keep a strict guidline NOT i reapeat NOT attak any friendly if they prove to be genuine or uniqe but had a change of heart. :steamhappy:

ive seen alot of genuine friendlys and ive seen the wort tryhards and false friendlys in my time working for the friendly protechtion orginization and i must say your forgot that most hoovys(like me) use the holiday punch and only try to not hurt anyone

I've been reading your comments and they are filled with understandable frustration with False Friendlies. I absolutely agree. They are a shame and disgrace to Genuine Friendly shenanigans and make the rest of us look like poop. Please do kill these "Friendly" players. The rest of us would applaud you. :the_golden_duck:

friendliens are pretty annoying sometimes, im really only fine with them if they dont taunt kill, heal, or do anything remotely fun. why? because i dont want them getting in conflicts, but since doing this is so boring, theyll just probably play the game normally after a while. also being a friendlien is boring as hellll anyways
