I haven't played this game in awhile, so I might be telling you the wrong thing here. I think I recall the perk layout, how you have it setup, will make a big difference in solo play. I know you don't want auto, but cant remember the term for the perk selection mode. I had all my most desired ones selelcted then rolled with it. I once complained to SnowBrigade that this perk selection method needed to be increased, because it only allowed so many, and I think he increased it. I did run the solo barricade for awhile and I agree it is a fun run and gun play. Powering/leveling up those turrets by standing near them early in game was pretty important from what I remember. THis may be boring stuff you already know, so all I can say is good luck.
