Foreword
This guide could not have happened if not for my friend Seseorang! He has contributed massive amounts of invaluable information to this guide, as well as writing a great deal of it! This guide would never have reached the standard it is if it wasn't for him.
So, remember to thank him for all his hard work.

If you are interested in contributing information (especially bugs and glitches) to this guide, please do so in the form of a comment at the bottom of the page.

So, read and learn, and I sincerely hope this guide increases your knowledge of all things Euro Truck Simulator! Have fun!
What is Euro Truck Simulator?

Euro Truck Simulator, or ETS, is a game with no end. You can go as long as you want and there are no real game overs, unless you run out of money. There are speed limits to adhere to, road and traffic regulations, schedules, payment, and fines. Fines? Yep. Sounds just like work, doesn't it? That's the simulator part of it.

You start off in a country of your choice and have €100,000 to buy your first truck, your 'Work Horse' if you will. You're now responsible for everything about it. Fuel, maintenance, repairing, upgrading and painting it are now your responsibility from when you purchase it to when you buy another truck.

When you first start a new game, you can only afford a few of the lower end trucks; the Class C trucks are cheap and lack real pulling power. When you can afford a Class B truck, you'll find the game is much easier and more enjoyable. How? We can't just tell you. You'll have to find out, sorry.
Note:You can only own one truck at a time, so you'll get a trade in value.

You'll still need to manage your cash. There are many things that you need to keep in mind when starting a job; fuel, repairs, fines. If you choose a long distance job and haven't got the money to cover it until you get paid, you'll be in trouble and possibly find the game ends before you truly get going.

This game does give a little more than real life. The time span is compressed, and the time it takes to travel distances are shorter as a result. Some more good news: time goes slower in the cities than on the larger roads (which you can go much faster on) outside of them. This gives you more time to get jobs, repair your truck and sleep while in town.

Your truck has the workings of a real truck. Wipers, lights, high beam and low beam for your headlights, a horn, parking brake, fully functioning mirrors and evem a fully functioning dashboard for those that want to use in cabin view only. The game is not cruel to those who cannot drive a truck in real life, unlike some simulators: you don't need to be 100% accurate when loading your trailers and driving. You can be fairly bad at truck driving in real life and still succeed in game.
Which truck should I buy?
When you start the game, you'll only be able to afford the Class C series of trucks. Eventually you will have enough money to upgrade to a Class B truck. There isn't much difference between Class B and A trucks; the only real benefit of buying a Class A truck is slightly higher statistics and two more gears.

Take a close look at the important figures; the torque value, and size of fuel tank. With more power comes better acceleration, and a larger tank means you can drive further before running out of fuel.

Hopefully, you'll upgrade at some point, so your first truck doesn't really matter. If you want, you can go purely on whichever you prefer.

The truck brands are based on real life trucks brands; Swift is based on Saab Scania, Majestic is based on Mercedes, Valiant is based on Volvo and Runner is based on Renault.
Job Offers
In Euro Truck Simulator, there are multiple companies that you can deliver for. They are all situated in different countries, each offering different business opportunities. Some may have more, others may have less. You may have to look around for the best offer, or that really high paying job.
The companies in the game (and where they are situated) are as follows:
  • EuroGoodies: Vienna, Brussels, Prague, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Warsaw, Barcelona, Bern, London, Manchester
  • EuroAcres: Bordeaux, Warsaw, Lisbon, Madrid, Bern, Newcastle
  • NBFC: Prague
  • Tradeaux: Lyon
  • Tree-Et: Lyon, Frankfurt, Madrid
  • LKWLog: Munich
  • FCP: Lyon
  • WGCC: Frankfurt
  • ITCC: Milan

Table of Companies
Click here to see a list of companies[docs.google.com], their locations and their job types. This was compiled by ak-72.
Speed Limits
There is a lot of confusion around speed limits in game, even though speed limits on many highways are the same. Here I have compiled information from as many reliable sources I could find about speed limits on different types of roads.

Highways/Freeways

The fastest speed possible on highways (without penalty) is 90 Kilometers per hour. Of course, when you're towing nothing there's nothing stopping you from going as fast as you want. Just make sure you're on the faster roads first. Even so, this could land you with a hefty fine.

Cities

In the Cities, the limit is 50 kilometers per hour. The roads from cities leading on to highways, however, generally have speed limits of 60 kilometers per hour for all vehicles. You know you're entering a built up area when the speed limit changes to 50 km/ph.

Consequences

Going faster than these speeds in the said areas can land you with a fine payable when you've completed your job.
Signage
This might seem like a trivial matter, but in-game signage can be very misleading.

These blue signs are only found in mainland Europe, on
highways. The UK uses a different numbering system.
This screenshot is not a speed limit, but in fact a reccomended speed.

There are also green signs which represent road numbers for A-Roads; two-lane roads with one lane going in each direction.

These signs represent speed limits. The number in the middle is the highest speed you can drive at without being fined.
Fines
As in real life, you get fines for bad driving in Euro Truck Simulator. There are no actual 'police' ever visible, but around thirty seconds to four minutes after you begin commiting an offence you will receive a fine (Vehicle collision fines and fines for running red lights are given out instantly). This lapse between receival of the fine and the subject commiting the offence is in place to allow you to correct yourself and to mimic the delay before the police notice you commiting the offence, as in real life.
Said fines are given out for the following things:
  • Driving on the wrong side of the road
  • Failing to use headlights at night
  • Passing through a red light
  • Vehicle collisions* (Your fault or not, you will be fined for these)

Fines are deducted from you at the end of the job.

*These also damage your truck and/or cargo. Cargo damage is reflected as a percentage of damage. 10% damage means 10% is deducted from your pay on successful delivery. It's not possible to repair your trailer/cargo, whereas truck damage accumulates over time, eventually rendering your truck undrivable if you do not get it repaired.

You can use SOS112 to get some damage repaired until you can get it full repaired at a dealer. SOS112 can also be used if you run out of fuel. This is not cheap, use it wisely.
Bugs and glitches
This section needs a constant community input to expand. Please tell us glitches you know so we can expand this section to include all known glitches.

  • There is a glitch with cruise control that causes your speed to stay around 4-6 kmph bellow
what you set it to. Therefore, when setting your cruise control speed, speed up to about four or five kilometers above the speed limit and then set it. This will keep your speed at the speed limit.

  • Doing 60MP/H in the UK gives you a speeding ticket when the limit is 60 for towing. That's about 100KM/H

  • You don't have to pay for fuel. Fill up at a fuel station, save, then reload and you can drive away and keep your cash.

  • Be careful with roads that merge with yours. Traffic coming to merge with you will not see you. The best way around this is to move over a lane everytime to prevent this and make the most from your profits.

  • As above, the AI is so stupid, that you might want to be careful with some roads, cars will NOT give way to you when the right of way is yours. If a vehicle is coming down a slip road and you're there, they WILL collide. Take a second to look out for them.

  • If you're off the road at a service station, or waiting around for the ingame time to pass by, and it's dark, and you have no lights on, you will be fined. Engine on or not.

  • Not so much a bug, but more of annoyance. Cars can stop quicker than you as well as other trucks. To avoid ramming one and getting fined, you should switch lanes, or keep your distance. This is more common when you're following a truck off the freeway/highway/motorway.

  • If you put your truck into reverse before you turn your vehicle off at a service station to rest, you will be accompanied by an annoying bleeping all night. This occurs whenever you turn your vehicle off in reverse gear.

  • (Credit to Poss_Pacman56) Never go over 2000 RPM (revolutions of your engine per minute) unless you've bought all three fuel consumption upgrades, as this results in a higher consumption rate of gas. If you bought Swift, however, the deadzone for gas is 2500-3000 RPM. All the readings of RPM but the one inside your truck are incorrect. Alternative views show RPM to be 200 RPM higher than your actual RPMs. For example, if you reach 1900 RPM, the alternative views read 2100 RPM. Forget that. Also, I recommend setting cruise control to 70 km/h. 70 km/ph is the border of the dead zone. Avoid accelerating and using your turn keys to turn. Disable cruise control by pressing the binded button for criuse control if you need to stop anywhere.
Q & A
Here we will answer some common questions from players who have been playing for a while and want to know more.

Q: Will my laptop/PC run this game?
A: Every computer is different, which is why the list of requirements is on the store page. Generally, laptop counterparts are not the same as those found in a PC so performance may suffer.

Q: Why aren't mods working with my Mac?
A: The Mac version doesn't support mods currently. It's just Windows only at this time.

Q: I've just found a brilliant mod, now what?
A: That's great. You can put the SCS files here: My Documents\Euro Truck Simulator\mod.

Q: I just saw Radio in the options, what does this mean?
A: Only use OGG files. Put your music files in My Documents\Euro Truck Simulator\music. To play them in game, press R and select, or just play the first in the list.

Q: Can I transfer my retail savegame to Steam's version?
A: Yes. As long as you're retail version has been updated to 1.3 which is considered the Gold upgrade, or ETS Gold which includes the UK.

Q: What country should I unlock first?
A: France, Germany and the UK are good choices. They each have 3 cities, offering more opportunities to deliver short-distance cargo jobs.

Q: How can I contribute to this guide?
A: Contact either of the persons who made this guide possible or leave a comment. We do read them.

I'm like 9 years late but I found a bug/exploit that isn't mentioned here:

If you turn on your hazard lights (both left and right signals on at once), no cars will ever try to pass you. This is useful for Highways if you're not paying much attention to traffic.

regarding the q&a section at the end, where it says that you should unlock france, germany or the uk first because you get 3 cities, this isn't quite true. it's best to unlock the netherlands or belgium first, because you get the 3 cities of germany or france respectively as well as amsterdam or brussels, for 4 cities. alternatively, if you pick poland, czechia or austria you get 3 cities (prague, warsaw and vienna), the same if you pick switzerland (for bern plus rome and milan) or portugal (lisbon + barcelona and madrid). otherwise this is a pretty cool guide
