Prelude
I've spent some time on the game and lurking FGW's forum to see that players are having difficulty with weapon access. One of these threads mentioned a really good point, so i figured I'd make a guide.

Winning battles gets you experience and credits, both of which are great in the long run and in purchasing items in the game respectively. This should be a short and sweet guide, so hopefully some of my suggestions and tips can help someone out there!
Know yourself, know your enemy
Do's
  • Go for the smaller groups running around when you start out the game. Groups of 10-15 should provide adequate difficulty

  • Know your strengths and weaknesses

  • Play Defensively

Don'ts

  • Run in Gung-ho
    You're not Sly Marbo/Rambo
Cover, it will save your life!
Do's
  • Use Trees as cover

  • Use stumps as cover

  • Use the ground elevation and cliffs to your advantage - This is covered in the step-by-step portion of the guide

Dont's
  • be in the middle of nowhere

  • use bushes as cover

  • stand up behind stumps. Crouch or prone only on stumps and logs.

As you can see here, i shot and killed an enemy behind this bush. Bushes are not cover.

On Shooting and compensating for bullet drop
Aim above using the iron sights using the little circle in the middle.

As you can see here, sights are right on the enemy, but it will not hit him. If you pull the trigger here, it will completely miss.

Compensate by aiming right above. Like so:

Step-by-Step Battle
This Section includes helpful tips for beginners to strategy and offers one way of playing a battle. Disclaimer: It is NOT the only way and I am not a professional tactician - I just love the game

Step one: Setup

Randomization Gods have granted me this wonderful scenario:

You might be wondering: "What do????"

Answer: Prioritize! Triage STAT!!!!

Do the Three Thinks
1. Think worse case scenario - They might spawn near, so I have to act fast and be defensive
2. Think what squads do I have
3. Think Defensive FIRST, Aggression LAST

Place your squads near the trees and stumps as you see on the map. They are indicated with tree signs and brown stump/log looking signs. The intuitive AI already knows what to do, so they'll be defensive and take cover automatically.

So i setup

After this initial defense stage. I do the second step, Scout.

Step two: Reconnaissance

Start looking for the enemy. IF YOU ARE NEW, use your squads initially to go out and explore but put them near you in case things head south. Since I knew my own strengths and weaknesses (I.e. I had decent armor defense and protection to mitigate damage, I'll scout a bit myself).

Low and Behold, enemies sighted. You can tell from either their uniforms ( for example, when fighting the Umans, their red uniforms can be seen a mile away, for this instance, fighting rebels are just grey looking guys that won't have labels on their heads) or that your loyal soldiers start shooting towards them like so.

If you aren't sure, double check the map. Use cover before pressing M like so

Sure enough, red dots. The battle commences.

Step three: Engagement
Onwards to the fight!

Find the nearest cover that you see. I saw logs and trees to my 10 o clock, so i b-lined my way there.

Finding my way to the tree nearest to me, I saw red uniforms behind some bushes. So use the cover (the tree), and do the lean mechanic using the Q and E.

Careful by this point, don't rush, Check all corners and cliffs. At this point, saw some tangos on the cliff and shot at them.

Check the map for more enemies, or look at where your soldiers are shooting.

Saw red dots in front of me, up on the hill, so Advance.

Use the terrain to your advantage

Stick to the ground, and use the contours of the cliffs to your advantage. Since i know the enemy is over the clifftop. I use the ground elevation to my advantage. The enemy won't shoot at you through the ground or the grass so you're fine.

Saw the perfect opportunity for my soldiers to help me. So i did a Pincer movement.

Pincer movements are your best friend

After clearing those tangos, Saw the last group on the horizon, So take your time to setup don't just rush them.

Last Firefight, remember, use cover to your advantage. Bring it home.

You did it bois
Thanks for Reading!
Enjoy FGW and keep on rockin'!

As General Jack Ripper said it all looks good on paper, until you get stuck on every tree you use to take cover...

When you have your map up, left click on your unit, or their profile picture, and then right click where you want them to go

Could you add something to your guide about NOT using trees as cover, because you get stuck?

"Yep, just tried this, and with an SV-98 I got within 15 minutes of fast-trading, I was happily soloing grops of 10+ bandits without getting hit or even seen half the time."
An MK14 and any scope is good enough against bandits aswell - they won´t see you anyway unless you get too close.

"I don't know if they've changed the AI to actually shoot at a distance though, and you do have to be shooting basically at ArmA engagement ranges"
They haven´t and you won´t ever be seeing an ArmA engagement range - the maps are too small for it and the AI is limited to engage at 50m at most as it seems.
Technically in the games current state: You just snipe them and bring a squad just in case (well, especially since you can get stuck quite often currently and if it happens you want the squads to engage to ensure victory).

I really do hope the devs are planning on overhauling the AI, especially since the game is out of Early Access now and it still plays like a pre-beta build at best.

Yep, just tried this, and with an SV-98 I got within 15 minutes of fast-trading, I was happily soloing grops of 10+ bandits without getting hit or even seen half the time.

Still quite possibly the easiest way to farm experience.

The thing is, you can super-easily just get a rifle, a bunch of ammo, then play a cat-and-mouse game across the entire map, effectively playing asymmetrical warfare with them, never letting them engage you properly.

All you have to do is be good enough at shooting that you can hit enemy targets from a distance and you're golden. I pretty much never travel with a squad, and with a bunch of ammo in my cache I could quite happily kill every enemy on the map solo.

I don't know if they've changed the AI to actually shoot at a distance though, and you do have to be shooting basically at ArmA engagement ranges, none of this short-range stuff.

If you want to "git good" at the tactical and operational side of the game, google TC 3-21.76. This publication is more commonly known as the "Ranger Handbook." Use it. Learn it. Love it. Crush your enemies.
