When the game characters asked you to come back later, this is what you should do.

I tried to leave my game running the first time I encounter this sort of quest, but no matter how long I waited this way the game just kept asking me to come back later. With a bit trial and error I found out that by come back later, the game was actually asking you to change screens a lot, and to go to different areas of the game and change your screen there, not by waiting in real life. For example when you were asked to wait and come back later to somewhere for something, you first have to right click your map and leave that place, and choose some other destinations, and preferably click through all walk-able areas there, and then leave, and choose another destination, and repeat, till you gone through all click-able areas of the whole town. The more places you clicked through the sooner the time passes and you will get what you want.

Although a bit old, this is very useful information. I've been playing this game on and off for years, and had no idea what actually made the time "pass" in game. I usually just wandered around looking at things, but not zoning much. This'll help cut the frustration level down a few notches!

It's the long standing tradition of Moon Logic in games. :lunar2019grinningpig:

We would not be needing any guide at all if the game was designed intuitively in the first place. The reason people are stuck in adventure game is more often than not due to bad puzzle design, like guessing the right answer to a mechanism that is too vague, not logical or doesn't make sense in the game context.

It's guides like these that make me think we need an adventure gaming 101 course.

Yeah, some of the old games would implement mechanics in which you would need to do specific tasks to get time to pass. You may not have picked up the right item or asked the right question so start clicking on everything. Leaving the place and coming back does help but not in all cases. :steamsad:
